Effects of Diazepam on Low-Frequency and High-Frequency Electrocortical γ-Power Mediated by α1- and α2-GABAA Receptors.

Patterns of spontaneous electric activity in the cerebral cortex change upon administration of benzodiazepines. Here we are testing the hypothesis that the prototypical benzodiazepine, diazepam, affects spectral power density in the low (20-50 Hz) and high (50-90 Hz) γ-band by targeting GABAA receptors harboring α1- and α2-subunits. Local field potentials (LFPs) and action potentials were recorded in the barrel cortex of wild type mice and two mutant strains in which the drug exclusively acted via GABAA receptors containing either α1- (DZα1-mice) or α2-subunits (DZα2-mice). In wild type mice,

[Spectrum of high-frequency oscillations of the electrocorticogram and their nature].

A gradual amplitude decrease towards higher frequencies was found in the spectrum (25-400 Hz) of the ECoG of the curarized rabbit. This gradual decrease of the amplitude continued to exist under the action of d-amphetamine, physostigmine, atropine, chlorpromazine and thiopental despite changes in the spectrum characteristic of every agent. These changes allowed finding the boundary near 40 Hz between high frequencies (HF) and conventional ECoG. The amplitudes of all HF components changed in the same direction independently of the ECoG. Unanimous changes suggest common genesis of HFs and a grad

Brainstem Dysfunction in Healthy Aging.

The brainstem controls sub-cortical and cortical activity and influences the processing of incoming information. The goal of this study was to characterize age related alterations of brainstem-brain interactions during different brain states detected by dynamic analysis of task-free fMRI. 79 young (20-40 years) and 51 older adults (55-80 years) were studied. Internal brainstem structures were segmented using a new multi-contrast segmentation approach. Brain and brainstem gray matter segmentations were warped onto a population template. The ICV-corrected Jacobian determinants were converted int

Essential tremor severity and anatomical changes in brain areas controlling movement sequencing.

OBJECTIVE: Although the cerebello-thalamo-cortical network has often been suggested to be of importance in the pathogenesis of essential tremor (ET), the origins of tremorgenic activity in this disease are not fully understood. We used a combination of cortical thickness imaging and neurophysiological studies to analyze whether the severity of tremor was associated with anatomical changes in the brain in ET patients. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a neurophysiological assessment were performed in 13 nondemented ET patients. High field structural brain MRI images acquired in a 3

The Evolving Cerebellar and Cerebello-cortical Functional Connectivity Architecture during Infancy.

The conventional understanding of the cerebellum as a sole movement control center has become obsolete, given its role in various higher-order functions, including cognition, emotion, and social processing. As these functions emerge during infancy, it is logical to assume that the cerebellum's functional organization evolve in tandem or preemptively to underpin these functions. However, the longitudinal development of the cerebellum's functional architecture during the crucial early years of infant life remains largely unexplored, highlighting a significant research gap. In this study, leverag

How auditory rhythm perception shapes speech production: The influence of neural synchronization and rhythmic patterns.

Auditory rhythm perception facilitates language processing, yet it remains unclear how neural synchronization to external rhythms contributes to speech production. The present study examined whether individual differences in neural synchronization modulate rhythmic priming effects during speech production and whether such effects depend on the rhythmic structure of the target utterance. Eighty-six native Mandarin speakers performed a speech production task involving two four-syllable rhythmic patterns as targets: the dominant [2+2] pattern (boundary after the second syllable) and the less comm

Epileptogenic modulation index and synchronization in hypsarrhythmia of West syndrome secondary to perinatal arterial ischemic stroke.

OBJECTIVE: Perinatal arterial ischemic stroke (PAIS) is associated with epileptic spasms of West syndrome (WS) and long term Focal epilepsy (FE). The mechanism of epileptogenic network generation causing hypsarrhythmia of WS is unknown. We hypothesized that Modulation index (MI) [strength of phase-amplitude coupling] and Synchronization likelihood (SL) [degree of connectivity] could interrogate the epileptogenic network in hypsarrhythmia of WS secondary to PAIS. METHODS: We analyzed interictal scalp electroencephalography (EEG) in 10 WS and 11 FE patients with unilateral PAIS. MI between gamm

Dynamics of EEG rhythms support distinct visual selection mechanisms in parietal cortex: a simultaneous transcranial magnetic stimulation and EEG study.

Using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), we have recently shown a functional anatomical distinction in human parietal cortex between regions involved in maintaining attention to a location [ventral intraparietal sulcus (vIPS)] and a region involved in shifting attention between locations [medial superior parietal lobule (mSPL)]. In particular, while rTMS interference over vIPS impaired target discrimination at contralateral attended locations, interference over mSPL affected performance following shifts of attention regardless of the visual field (Capotosto et al., 2013). Current advances in the cognitive neuroscience of music.

The study of music perception and cognition is one of the oldest topics in experimental psychology. The last 20 years have seen an increased interest in understanding the functional neuroanatomy of music processing in humans, using a variety of technologies including fMRI, PET, ERP, MEG, and lesion studies. We review current findings in the context of a rich intellectual history of research, organized by the cognitive systems underlying different aspects of human musical behavior. We pay special attention to the perception of components of musical processing, musical structure, laterality effe

Abnormal oscillatory synchronisation in the motor system leads to impaired movement.

Converging data suggest that abnormal synchronised oscillatory activity in the basal ganglia may contribute to bradykinesia in patients with Parkinson's disease. This synchrony preferentially occurs over 10-30 Hz, the so-called beta band. Correlative evidence has been supplemented by experiments in which direct stimulation of the basal ganglia in the beta band slows movement. Yet questions remain regarding the small scale of the latter effects and whether synchrony is an early or even obligatory feature of parkinsonism. Nevertheless, the principle that abnormally synchronised activity in the b

Alpha power dependent light stimulation: dynamics of event-related (de)synchronization in human electroencephalogram.

The desynchronization and resynchronization of alpha oscillations was studied in 10 normal subjects after visual stimulation of both eyes under two experimental conditions, "eyes opened" and "eyes closed". The electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded bipolarly over the occipital area and sampled at 200 Hz. The data was processed in real time and evaluated online. In accordance with the alpha power in the 7 to 13 Hz band, short red light flashes of 10 ms duration were presented at intervals of at least 2 s. This stimulation resulted in an event-related desynchronization (ERD) followed by resynch

Magnetoencephalography and stereopsis: rhythmic cortical activity in humans recorded over the parieto-occipital cortex.

We have studied human stereopsis by analysing magnetoencephalographic signals during the presentation of stereograms using frequency analysis. The study of synchronised firing of cortical neurones is a new way of understanding information processing in the brain and it is hypothesised that frequencies greater than 35 Hz are used for higher-order processing. We report the response of cortical neurones involved in stereopsis recorded from over the occipital and parietal cortices using a single channel axial superconducting quantum interference device neuromagnetometer. Our main result was increa

[Electrophysiological research on pain and itching in the clinic].

To study the central mechanisms of pain and itching, the authors performed electroencephalographic (EEG) examination in acupuncture-treated patients with diffuse neurodermatitis (n = 43) and trigeminal neuralgia (n = 25). The most characteristic EEG finding was increased synchronization of the cortical rhythm. The revealed EEG features point to the functional involvement of the thalamocortical system in the development of pain and itching. Changes of clinical and electrophysiological parameters in the course of acupuncture treatment is an additional evidence of the morphofunctional unity of th

Behavioural, electrocortical and body temperature effects of cholera toxin.

In young chicks intrahypothalamic infusion of cholera toxin produced a dramatic and dose-dependent increase in motor activity. Similar effects were also obtained in adult fowls after injection of cholera toxin into the third cerebral ventricle, the hypothalamus or the paleostriatum augmentatum. Electrocortical changes consisted of a slight desynchronization during the hypermotor activity and were preceded, when the highest intraventricular doses were used, by a short period of slower frequency and higher amplitude potentials. Intraventricular and intrahypothalamic but not intrastriatal injecti

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound modulates multi-frequency band phase synchronization between LFPs and EMG in mice.

OBJECTIVE: Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound stimulation (LIPUS) targeted to the mouse motor cortex can simultaneously induce local field potentials (LFPs) and electromyogram (EMG) responses. However, the functional coupling relationship between LFP and EMG signals has not been elucidated to date. This study aimed to investigate the phase synchronization between LFP and EMG signals induced by LIPUS over the mouse motor cortex. APPROACH: LIPUS at 500 kHz with varied sonication intensities and duty cycles (DCs), was delivered to the mouse motor cortex. LFPs of the motor cortex and EMG responses o

Brain dynamics: Synchronous peaks, functional connectivity, and its temporal variability.

We describe advances in the understanding of brain dynamics that are important for understanding the operation of the cerebral cortex in health and disease. Peaks in the resting state fMRI BOLD signal in many different brain areas can become synchronized. In data from 1,017 participants from the Human Connectome Project, we show that early visual and connected areas have the highest probability of synchronized peaks. We show that these cortical areas also have low temporal variability of their functional connectivity. We show that there is an approximately reciprocal relation between the proba

[Gamma oscillation synchronization in schizophrenia--literature review].

INTRODUCTION: Gamma oscillation - as a basic operating mode of cortical networks - has received considerable interest in the the current EEG literature. Research in the field of gamma synchronization in schizophrenia has become the focus of psychiatry research in the past two decades, obtaining significant attention from the beginning, since the idea that a deficit in synchronization, especially in gamma oscillation synchronization might play a principal role in certain schizophrenia symptoms has emerged. METHODS: In our review we aim to provide a brief description of the theoretical backgrou
