Hydrothermal and Organosolv Treatments for Hydroxycinnamate Release from Corn Stover: Strong versus Mild Alkaline Catalysis.

Corn stover (CS) is an abundant biomaterial, which is regularly rejected during corn harvesting. This biowaste is a typical lignocellulosic source rich in hydroxycinnamates, which are mainly represented by p-coumaric acid and ferulic acid. These polyphenols are largely bound onto the lignocellulosic complex and can be effectively liberated using alkaline catalysis. On this basis, the work described herein targeted at developing a high-performance process for producing hydroxycinnamate-enriched extracts, by deploying alkali-catalyzed hydrothermal and organosolv treatments. For this purpose, sod

Computational modeling-assisted discovery of the structural effects of phenylpropanoid derivatives on intracellular anti-Trypanosoma cruzi activity.

Previous investigations have demonstrated that n-hexacosyl p-coumarate, a natural product isolated from the Brazilian plant Baccharis sphenophylla, exhibits activity against the extracellular (trypomastigote) forms of Trypanosoma cruzi. Structural modification of this compound led to the synthesis of the n-hexyl p-coumarate derivative, which showed significantly improved bioactivity, achieving an EC₅₀ value of 1.7 μM and a selectivity index of 71 against trypomastigote forms. However, when tested against intracellular amastigote forms, the compound displayed only moderate activity (EC₅₀ = 13 μ

Welsh onion extract inhibits PCSK9 expression contributing to the maintenance of the LDLR level under lipid depletion conditions of HepG2 cells.

Statins mediate the transactivation of PCSK9, which in turn limits their cholesterol-lowering effects via LDL receptor (LDLR) degradation. The objective of the present study was to investigate the mechanism of action by which Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L. [family Amaryllidaceae]) extract (WOE) regulates LDLR and PCSK9. HepG2 cells were cultured under lipid depletion conditions using a medium supplemented with delipidated serum (DLPS). WOE (50, 100, 200, and 400 μg ml-1) significantly attenuated the DLPS-mediated increases in LDLR, PCSK9, and SREBP2 gene expression. While WOE treatment main

Copper exposure leads to changes in chlorophyll content and secondary metabolite profile in Lantana fucata leaves.

Cultivation of plants in environments polluted by metals at toxic levels can affect the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Here, we analysed the effect caused by excess copper on the concentration of chlorophylls a and b and the profile of secondary metabolites of Lantana fucata leaves. Five copper (Cu) treatments (mg Cukg-1 soil) were tested: T0, 0; T1, 210; T2, 420; T3, 630; and T4, 840. We found that the concentrations of chlorophylls in the plants decreased when compared to the control. However, this did not lead to a significant reduction in its growth, possibly due to the low translo

Identification of phenylamide phytoalexins and characterization of inducible phenylamide metabolism in wheat.

Changes in specialized metabolites were analyzed in wheat leaves inoculated with Bipolaris sorokiniana, the causal agent of spot blotch of Poaceae species. HPLC analysis detected the accumulation of six compounds in B. sorokiniana-infected leaves. Of these, we purified two compounds by silica gel and ODS column chromatography and preparative HPLC, and identified them as cinnamic acid amides, N-cinnamoyl-9-hydroxy-8-oxotryptamine and N-cinnamoyl-8-oxotryptamine, by spectroscopic analyses. The remaining four compounds were predicted to be p-coumaric acid amides of hydroxyputrescine, hydroxyagmat
