Leveraging Social Media and Crowdsourcing to Recruit and Retain Military Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder or Experience of Harmful Gambling for mHealth Interventions: Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Military veterans may be at increased risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared to the general population. PTSD is often comorbid with harmful and problematic patterns of gambling. Behavioral therapies such as acceptance and commitment therapy have shown promise in treating these co-occurring disorders, especially if combined with mobile health (mHealth) interventions to circumvent known help-seeking barriers faced by veterans. However, to date, recruitment for mHealth interventions has been challenging and may impact intervention feasibility. OBJECTIVE: In this paper,

The Psychosocial Predictors and Day-Level Correlates of Substance Use Among Participants Recruited via an Online Crowdsourcing Platform in the United States: Daily Diary Study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption and stimulant use are major public health problems and contribute to morbidity and mortality in the United States. To inform interventions for substance use, there is a need to identify the day-level correlates of substance use by collecting repeated measures data in one's natural environment. There is also a need to use crowdsourcing platforms like Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) to efficiently engage larger populations of people who use alcohol and stimulants in research. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to (1) utilize daily diaries to examine the temporal relationship bet

Exploring infiltration effects on coastal urban flooding: Insights from nuisance to extreme events using 2D/1D hydrodynamic modeling and crowdsourced flood reports.

Coastal urban flooding presents significant challenges due to the complex interactions between surface runoff, storm tides, and drainage systems. In highly impervious urban areas, infiltration may seem negligible, particularly during extreme events when soil saturation is rapidly exceeded. However, for nuisance flooding-becoming more frequent due to sea level rise and shifting rainfall patterns-the role of infiltration warrants closer examination. This study aims to assess the impact of incorporating infiltration processes into an urban flood model by evaluating flood extent under 1-, 10-, 50-

Crowdsourced Perceptual Ratings of Voice Quality in People With Parkinson's Disease Before and After Intensive Voice and Articulation Therapies: Secondary Outcome of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Limited research has examined the suitability of crowdsourced ratings to measure treatment effects in speakers with Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly for constructs such as voice quality. This study obtained measures of reliability and validity for crowdsourced listeners' ratings of voice quality in speech samples from a published study. We also investigated whether aggregated listener ratings would replicate the original study's findings of treatment effects based on the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) measure. METHOD: This study reports a secondary outcome measure of a ran

Testing the effects of segmented crowdsource-selected messages to improve intentions to follow colorectal cancer screening recommendations: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in the United States (U.S.). CRC screening (CRCS) is an important method of cancer prevention and early detection, but often receives less public attention than other cancer and screening types. Regular CRCS is recommended for most individuals aged 45–75, though screening rates are lower than desired in the U.S. Despite similar screening rates, Black Americans experience a variety of CRC-related disparities including higher incidence and mortality rates in the United States. Research suggests Black

Decreased Seasonal Influenza Rates Detected in a Crowdsourced Influenza-Like Illness Surveillance System During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal respiratory viruses had lower incidence during their 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons, which overlapped with the COVID-19 pandemic. The widespread implementation of precautionary measures to prevent transmission of SARS-CoV-2 has been seen to also mitigate transmission of seasonal influenza. The COVID-19 pandemic also led to changes in care seeking and access. Participatory surveillance systems have historically captured mild illnesses that are often missed by surveillance systems that rely on encounters with a health care provider for detection. OBJECTIVE: This study aime

Should we screen less frequently for chlamydia and gonorrhoea in gay and bisexual men who have sex with men? Findings from a global crowdsourcing exercise with experts.

OBJECTIVES: Many countries recommend 3-monthly chlamydia/gonorrhoea screening for gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Evidence about the limited impact of frequent, asymptomatic gonorrhoea/chlamydia screening on population prevalence, coupled with concerns about overburdened health services and antimicrobial resistance (from frequent treatment), calls into question current approaches to asymptomatic screening. We explored sexual health professionals/experts' arguments in favour/against reducing asymptomatic screening using Polis (www.Pol.is), an online, crowdsourcing too

Enhancing HIV Self-Testing Among Nigerian Youth: Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of the 4 Youth by Youth Study Using Crowdsourced Youth-Led Strategies.

Although HIV self-testing (HIVST) has expanded in many regions, a few HIVST services have been tailored for and organized by youth. Innovative HIVST models are needed to differentiate testing services and generate local demand for HIVST among youth. The current pilot study aimed at examining the feasibility and efficacy of crowdsourced youth-led strategies to enhance HIVST as well as sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing. Teams of youth iteratively developed HIVST interventions using crowdsourcing approaches and apprenticeship training. Five interventions were selected and then evaluate

Comparing the effectiveness of a crowdsourced video and a social marketing video in promoting condom use among Chinese men who have sex with men: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Crowdsourcing has been used to spur innovation and increase community engagement in public health programmes. Crowdsourcing is the process of giving individual tasks to a large group, often involving open contests and enabled through multisectoral partnerships. Here we describe one crowdsourced video intervention in which a video promoting condom use is produced through an open contest. The aim of this study is to determine whether a crowdsourced intervention is as effective as a social marketing intervention in promoting condom use among high-risk men who have sex with men (MSM)

Stimulating training and access to HIV research experiences (STAR program): a protocol for a crowdsourced, project-based, implementation science training program using mixed-methods design.

BACKGROUND: HIV is more common among underrepresented minority adolescents and young adults (AYA, 13-24 years old) in the United States. Low uptake of HIV prevention services suggests a missed opportunity for implementing evidence-based interventions such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and sexually transmitted infection testing among this important population. Most research institutions in the United States also have limited opportunities for AYA training, mentorship, and capacity-building activities. METHODS: The "Stimulating Training and Access to HIV Research Experiences" (STAR) progra

A crowdsourced intervention to promote hepatitis B and C testing among men who have sex with men in China: study protocol for a nationwide online randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends all men who have sex with men (MSM) receive Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) testing. MSM in China are a high-risk group for HBV and HCV infection, but test uptake is low. Crowdsourcing invites a large group to solve a problem and then shares the solution with the public. This nationwide online randomized controlled trial will evaluate the effectiveness of a crowdsourced intervention to increase HBV and HCV testing among MSM in China. METHODS: Seven hundred MSM will be recruited through social media operated by MSM organi

The HI V O pen Call on I nformed C onsent and E thics in Research (VOICE) for Adolescents and Young Adults: A Digital Crowdsourcing Open Call in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

BACKGROUND: Many adolescents and young adults (AYAs; 10-24 years old) are excluded from HIV research because of social, ethical, and legal challenges with informed consent, resulting in limited AYA-focused data. We use a participatory approach to identify strategies for improving AYA consent processes in HIV research in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: We conducted a digital crowdsourcing open call for ideas to improve AYA consent to HIV research in LMICs. Crowdsourcing involves engaging a group of people in problem-solving, then sharing emergent solutions. Submissions were

A fog-assisted group-based truth discovery framework over mobile crowdsensing data streams.

With the proliferation of mobile crowdsensing (MCS) and crowdsourcing, new challenges are emerging every day. Although crowdsensing has become a popular sensing paradigm to aggregate sensor readings from a variety of sources, data inconsistency has arisen as a serious challenge. Truth discovery (TD) has been developed as an effective method for reducing data inconsistency and as a validity assessment for conflicting data from various sources. In addition, MCS applications and services are moving beyond a single individual participant to community groups and are influenced by group behavior. To

Learning From Crowds With Multiple Feature Dynamic Fusion-Based Annotation Generation.

As the scale of data grows for machine learning, annotating data accurately is extremely time-consuming and with high economic costs. To alleviate this dilemma, crowdsourcing has been widely used for data collection and annotation. Learning from crowds gradually becomes a popular machine learning paradigm, where learning models are trained with datasets labeled by different crowd workers. Therefore, it inevitably introduces label noise, which seriously degrades the performance of models. Previous research reveals that modeling the process of generating crowdsourced labels is a powerful tool to
