Iatrogenic skin injury in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Although neonatal care has become more and more meticulous with significant changes in technology in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the past 50 years, iatrogenic cutaneous injuries continue to occur. Although the incidence of severe injuries is decreasing because the more difficult procedures are being replaced by improved techniques, skin injuries have not yet been completely eliminated. However, the nature and causes of cutaneous injuries have changed, and the injuries are frequent but generally minor. The major risk factors are low birth weight, gestational age, length of stay,

Irritant contact dermatitis. Clues to causes, clinical characteristics, and control.

Skin irritation can cause poorly defined nonimmunologic cutaneous changes that may cause diagnostic confusion. Clinical signs include vesicles, papules, bullae, erythema, edema, scaling, and lichenification. In some patients, this condition, termed irritant contact dermatitis, is indistinguishable from endogenous, dyshidrotic, nummular, and atopic dermatitis. Irritant contact dermatitis has only a few typical characteristics. The diagnosis is generally based on clinical appearance, history and, when indicated, diagnostic patch testing to rule out an allergic component. Elimination of the offen

[Cutaneous Vasculitides - Clinical Manifestations, Diagnosis, and Aetiology].

Cutaneous Vasculitides - Clinical Manifestations, Diagnosis, and Aetiology Abstract. Vasculitides are a heterogeneous group of diseases that are classified differently, for example according to the size of the affected vessel or according to primary and secondary causes. The skin is most frequently affected; it can be involved both as single organ vasculitis and in the context of systemic forms. The combination of skin lesions, their anatomical location and information on the time course provide clues for a differential diagnosis. Purpura, blisters, necrosis, ulcerations and possibly a livedo

[From Biological Effects of Local Cutaneous Thermal Stimulation to Moxibustion Therapy].

Moxibustion is one of the major external therapies of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and exerts a definite favorable effect in the treatment of patients with different problems. In the present paper, the authors reviewed 38 papers about somatic thermal intervention therapy published in recent 15 years and analyzed its biological functions from local, distal, and whole body effects. The local effects include 1) improving cutaneous inflammatory illnesses as verruca, herpes simplex, Leishmania infection, cutaneous necrosis, wound disunion, and promoting percutaneous absorption of some medicin

Macrophages in acne vulgaris: mediating phagocytosis, inflammation, scar formation, and therapeutic implications.

Macrophages serve as a pivotal nexus in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris, orchestrating both the elimination of Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) and lipid metabolic regulation while also possessing the capacity to exacerbate inflammation and induce cutaneous scarring. Additionally, recent investigations underscore the therapeutic potential inherent in macrophage modulation and challenge current anti-inflammatory strategies for acne vulgaris. This review distills contemporary advances, specifically examining the dual roles of macrophages, underlying regulatory frameworks, and emergent therapeuti

Structure-Property Optimization of a Series of Imidazopyridines for Visceral Leishmaniasis.

Leishmaniasis is a collection of diseases caused by more than 20 Leishmania parasite species that manifest as either visceral, cutaneous, or mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. Despite the significant mortality and morbidity associated with leishmaniasis, it remains a neglected tropical disease. Existing treatments have variable efficacy, significant toxicity, rising resistance, and limited oral bioavailability, which necessitates the development of novel and affordable therapeutics. Here, we report on the continued optimization of a series of imidazopyridines for visceral leishmaniasis and a scaffol

Sitamaquine as a putative antileishmanial drug candidate: from the mechanism of action to the risk of drug resistance.

Sitamaquine is a 8-aminoquinoline in development for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis by oral route, no activity being observed on the experimental cutaneous leishmaniasis experimental models. Recent data explain how sitamaquine accumulate in Leishmania parasites, however its molecular targets remain to be identified. An advantage of sitamaquine is its short elimination half-life, preventing a rapid resistance emergence. The antileishmanial action of its metabolites is not known. The selection of a sitamaquine-resistant clone of L. donovani in laboratory and the phase II clinical trials

Quantitation of immediate and delayed hypersensitivity responses in Trichinella-infected mice. Correlation with worm expulsion.

The developmental relationships between active cutaneous or local anaphylaxis, delayed hypersensitivity and worm expulsion were quantitatively examined in Trichinella-infected mice. The onset of both types of hypersensitivities and increase in sensitivity to antigen following an initial infection correlated with the onset and rate of elimination of adult worms. Mice passively sensitized with serum containing both IgG1 and IgE antibodies, but not IgG1 alone, expelled their worms at a faster rate in comparison to the controls. On the basis of these findings it is suggested that local allergic re

The participation of common and species-"specific" antigens of Mycobacteria in the tuberculin skin reaction.

Protoplasmic extracts isolated from four different species of mycobacteria contained common and species-specific antigens. Both the common and the specific antigens were involved in the elicitation of the tuberculin reaction in sensitized guinea pigs. The elimination of the common antigens from the extracts by means of cross absorption with heterologous mycobacterial antibodies led to preparations which, at the doses used in this study, elicited a cutaneous reaction in animals sensitized with the corresponding strains only. Moreover, the tuberculin activity of the common antigens was about the

The Cutaneous Leishmaniasis and the Sand Fly: Knowledge and Beliefs of the Population in Central Morocco (El Hajeb).

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a neglected parasitic dermal disease transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected female sand fly. Morocco hopes to eliminate all forms of leishmaniasis by 2030. These dermatoses pose a real public health problem in the country. Although the information is available on the disease, individual knowledge of cutaneous leishmaniasis and sand fly is not yet developed. Exploring people's beliefs and popular behaviours about cutaneous leishmaniasis and its vector allows health officials to know the sociocultural aspects of the disease and to improve pre

Interleukin-31, a Potent Pruritus-Inducing Cytokine and Its Role in Inflammatory Disease and in the Tumor Microenvironment.

Substantial new information has emerged supporting the fundamental role of the cytokine interleukin-31 (IL-31) in the genesis of chronic pruritus in a broad array of clinical conditions. These include inflammatory conditions, such as atopic dermatitis and chronic urticaria, to autoimmune conditions such as dermatomyositis and bullous pemphigoid, to the lymphoproliferative disorders of Hodgkin's disease and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. IL-31 is produced in greatest quantity by T-helper type 2 (Th2) cells and upon release, interacts with a cascade of other cytokines and chemokines to lead to pruri

[Neonatal cutaneous hematopoiesis disclosing congenital rubella].

INTRODUCTION: Congenital rubella, which should disappear with widespread vaccination and mandatory obstetrical care, can occur as a purpuric eruption in the newborn. We report a case of blueberry muffin baby. CASE REPORT: An infant delivered after an "uneventful" pregnancy presented a generalized "purpuric" eruption and had axial hypotonia. Histology of a biopsy showed evidence of cutaneous erythropoiesis. The complete workup led to the diagnosis of congenital rubella. DISCUSSION: Cutaneous erythropoiesis is a well defined clinical and histological entity. There are several causes including

Pharmacokinetics of pentavalent antimony (Pentostam) in hamsters.

Pentavalent antimony (Sb) is the classical treatment for visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis. We investigated Sb levels in serum, liver, spleen, and skin of hamsters administered therapeutic dosages of Sb (600 and 300 mg Sb/kg). Single administration of Sb was more effective against hepatic parasites than dividing the same total dose into multiple administrations, which suggests that for elimination of hepatic parasites in vivo, peak Sb concentration is more important than total area-under-the-curve levels. Serum Sb declined with an initial half-life of 1 hr. Skin Sb levels (352 micrograms Sb

Immunohistological investigations in chronic cutaneous leishmaniasis in Saudi Arabia.

The distribution and numbers of IgG-, IgA-, IgM-, and lysozyme-positive cells were investigated by the immunoperoxidase method in paraffin-sections of 13 cases of chronic cutaneous leishmaniasis of low parasite load from Saudi Arabia. The majority of the peroxidase-positive plasma cells contained IgG, whereas the numbers of IgA+ and IgM+ plasma cells were not so numerous. Small groups of squamous epithelial cells showed immunoreactivity for IgG and IgA. Similar positive staining was observed extracellularly in the oedematous upper dermis, in the endothelial cells, and in the perivascular space
