OBJECTIVE: Treatment-naïve patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are characterized by diffuse abnormalities of resting-state cortical electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms (Babiloni et al., 2012a). Here, we tested the hypothesis that these EEG rhythms vary as a function of the systemic immune activity and antiretroviral therapy (ART) in HIV patients.
METHODS: Resting-state eyes-closed EEG data were recorded in 68 ART-HIV patients (mini mental state evaluation (MMSE) of 27.5 ± 0.3 SEM), in 60 treatment-naïve HIV subjects (MMSE of 27.5 ± 0.4 SEM) and in 75 age-matched cognitively nor

The transition from wakefulness to NREM sleep is associated with typical signs of brain electrical activity, characterized by prolonged periods of hyperpolarization and increased membrane conductance in thalamocortical (TC) neurons, with the consequence that incoming messages are inhibited and the cerebral cortex is deprived of signals from the outside world. There are three major oscillations during NREM sleep. Spindles are generated within the thalamus, due to thalamic reticular (RE) neurons that impose rhythmic inhibitory sequences onto TC neurons, but the widespread synchronization of this

Schizophrenia involves abnormalities in the medial frontal cortex that lead to cognitive deficits. Here we investigate a novel strategy to normalize medial frontal brain activity by stimulating cerebellar projections. We used an interval timing task to study elementary cognitive processing that requires both frontal and cerebellar networks that are disrupted in patients with schizophrenia. We report three novel findings. First, patients with schizophrenia had dysfunctional delta rhythms between 1-4 Hz in the medial frontal cortex. We explored cerebellar-frontal interactions in animal models an

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of smoking during pregnancy on the development of the child. While previous research has established its detrimental effects during early childhood, understanding potential long-term consequences into adulthood remains limited. This study specifically aimed to explore the influence of prenatal smoking exposure on brain activity and whether internalizing and externalizing symptoms are influenced by prenatal smoking exposure in a cohort of young adults.
METHODS: Utilizing data from 176 participants (mean age M = 24.68, SD = 0.

Interactions among cortical areas of tinnitus brain remained unclear. Weaker alpha and stronger delta activities in tinnitus have been noted over auditory cortices. However, the interplay between a single substrate with whole brain within alpha/delta band remained unknown. Thirty-one patients with chronic tinnitus were recruited. Thirty-four healthy volunteers served as controls. Magnetoencephalographic measurements of spontaneous activities were performed. The strength of alpha/delta activities was analyzed. By dividing cortices into 38 regions of interest (ROIs), measurements of connectivity

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can non-invasively modulate neuronal activity in the cerebral cortex, in particular at the frequency of the applied stimulation. Such modulation can matter for speech processing, since the latter involves the tracking of slow amplitude fluctuations in speech by cortical activity. tACS with a current signal that follows the envelope of a speech stimulus has indeed been found to influence the cortical tracking and to modulate the comprehension of the speech in background noise. However, how exactly tACS influences the speech-related cortical ac

Categorization has been associated with distributed networks of the primate brain, including the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Although category-selective spiking in PFC and PPC has been established, the frequency-dependent dynamic interactions of frontoparietal networks are largely unexplored. We trained monkeys to perform a delayed-match-to-spatial-category task while recording spikes and local field potentials from the PFC and PPC with multiple electrodes. We found category-selective beta- and delta-band synchrony between and within the areas. However, in addi

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiological mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction and dementia in Parkinson's disease (PD) are still poorly understood. Altered resting state oscillatory brain activity may reflect underlying neuropathological changes. The present study using magneto encephalography (MEG) was set up to study differences in the pattern of resting state oscillatory brain activity in groups of demented and non-demented PD patients and healthy, elderly controls.
METHODS: The pattern of MEG background oscillatory activity was studied in 13 demented PD patients, 13 non-demented PD patients and 1

Cognitive functions such as working memory require integrated activity among different brain regions. Notably, entorhinal cortex (EC) activity is associated with the successful working memory task. Olfactory bulb (OB) oscillations are known as rhythms that modulate rhythmic activity in widespread brain regions during cognitive tasks. Since the OB is structurally connected to the EC, we hypothesized that OB could modulate EC activity during working memory performance. Herein, we explored OB-EC functional connectivity during spatial working memory performance by simultaneous recording local fiel

Abnormal focal slow wave activity on electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography (MEG) is often seen in patients with various brain pathologies and MEG is capable of localizing cortical oscillatory activity with enhanced accuracy. In addition, MEG with synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) can depict changes in cortical oscillatory activity tomographically. Using SAM, we recorded cortical rhythms in patients with a brain tumor and evaluated the tomographic appearance of focal slow wave activity in relation to clinical signs and symptoms. Spontaneous MEG recordings were obtained in 15 pat

BACKGROUND: Accurate temporal prediction, essential for adaptive motor behavior, relies on corticobasal ganglia circuits. In Parkinson's disease (PD), both motor and non-motor functions are impaired. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) effectively alleviates motor symptoms, but its effects on non-motor domains, like temporal prediction, remain less understood.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate how STN-DBS influences temporal prediction performance and its underlying oscillatory dynamics in PD patients, with a particular focus on beta band power and delta ban

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related cues are a critical factor in relapse among individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD), yet their neuroelectrophysiological mechanisms at the brain network level remain unclear. This study aims to investigate alterations in functional connectivity and topological properties of brain networks in AUD patients during alcohol cue processing.
METHODS: A three-stimulus oddball paradigm with alcohol-related images was used. After rigorous EEG quality control, 16 AUD patients and 16 matched healthy controls were included in the final analysis. Source-level phase locking v

Working memory (WM) deficits constitute a core symptom of schizophrenia. Inadequacy of WM maintenance in schizophrenia has been reported to reflect abnormalities in the excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance between pyramidal neurons and parvalbumin basket cells, which may explain alterations of the dynamics of gamma and delta oscillations. To address this issue, we assessed event-related gamma (35-45 Hz) and delta (0.5-4 Hz) oscillatory responses in a visual n-back WM task in patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) and healthy controls (HC). Periodicity analyses of oscillations were computed

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To compare electroencephalogram (EEG) dynamics during nocturnal sleep in patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy and healthy controls. Fragmented nocturnal sleep is a prominent feature and contributes to excessive daytime sleepiness in narcolepsy-cataplexy. Only 3 studies have addressed changes in homeostatic sleep regulation as a possible mechanism underlying nocturnal sleep fragmentation in narcolepsy-cataplexy.
DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Baseline sleep of 11 drug-naive patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy (19-37 years) and 11 matched controls (18-41 years) was polysomnogr

Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is a naturally occurring transmitter in the mammalian brain, related to sleep regulation and possibly to energy balance in diving or hibernating animals. It has been used for almost 35 years as an intravenous agent for induction of anaesthesia and for long-term sedation. Its convincing pharmacological properties, without serious adverse effects on circulation or respiration, are compromised by its unpredictable duration of action. This is not a major problem with long-term sedation during ICU treatment. GHB has been used with good results for sedation of patient

A retrospective study comparing the EEG findings of two groups of patients with primary systemic malignant disease (mainly bronchial carcinoma) was carried out. One group of 13 patients (20 EEGs) had proven supratentorial cerebral metastases at necropsy, some also subtentorial, and the other group of 10 patients (15 EEGs) had no cerebral involvement at necropsy. The latter group was studied to assess the possible confusing effects in the EEG of metabolic derangements and other factors which would interfere with accurate prediction of the presence of metastases. The EEGs were masked and assesse

To see if the opiate receptor/endorphin system plays a part in the regulation of natural sleep in humans the effects of the opiate antagonist naloxone on delta sleep were examined. The sleep behaviour of each of six healthy male volunteers aged 20-32 years was monitored by continuous recordings of EEG, EOG, EMG, heart rate and respiratory rate for 3 nights. The sleep stages were evaluated according to Rechtschaffen and Kales. Naloxone (0.03 mg/kg body wt.) or saline as placebo was administered intravenously in a double-blind randomized order during the spontaneously occurring delta sleep, the

Repeated injections of delta sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) were given to a 35-year-old male narcoleptic. Effects on wakefulness and sleep were evaluated by self-reports, performance tests, multiple sleep latency test and all-night polysomnography. DSIP reduced the frequency of sleep attacks and increased activity, alertness and performance during day-time. The sleep period was compressed by DSIP with enhancement of REM sleep. The results suggest that the effects are due to an accentuation of circadian and ultradian rhythms by DSIP.

OBJECTIVE: Phase synchronization is suggested to be among the mechanisms that can explain the effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). However, little is known about the effects of tACS on event-related oscillatory activity. Therefore the objective was to investigate frequency-related effects of frontal tACS on event-related oscillatory power.
METHODS: In a double blind randomized controlled cross-over design, twenty-four participants received 12min of delta (2.5Hz), theta tACS (5Hz) and sham tACS at an intensity of 1mA peak-to-peak. Event-related delta- and theta-relat
