Sealing properties of Ketac-Endo glass ionomer cement and AH26 root canal sealers.

Sealing capacity, setting shrinkage and setting time of a recently introduced glass ionomer cement Ketac-Endo were compared with that of a conventional sealer AH26. Sixty half-cylinders, 8 mm long, 4 mm in diameter, made from fresh bovine root dentine, had their smear layer removed before being cemented together while separated by 1-mm spacers. This resulted in a group of 15 cylinders cemented with Ketac-Endo and a similar group with AH26. After coating the lateral surface with nail varnish, one end of each cylinder was connected with a tube filled with water under 120 kPa (1.2 atm) pressure.

Near-Atomic-Scale Characterization of Diagenetic Signatures in a Fossil Dinosaur Tooth by Atom Probe Tomography.

Understanding the diagenesis of fossil teeth requires linking microstructure to chemistry across spatial scales to distinguish primary biogenic signals from diagenetic signals introduced by fluid-mineral interactions. Here, we investigate a Cretaceous theropod tooth using a multiscale analytical workflow that combines scanning and transmission electron microscopy with atom probe tomography. The results reveal a hierarchical pattern of diagenetic alteration in both enamel and dentine spanning from the microscale to the near-atomic scale. Enamel largely preserves its densely packed apatite cryst

Tubular occlusion prevents water-treeing and through-and-through fluid movement in a single-bottle, one-step self-etch adhesive model.

Water entrapment occurs at resin-dentin interfaces of one-step self-etch adhesives. We hypothesized that by preventing water fluxes from dentin, any water entrapment would be attributed to incomplete removal of adhesive solvents. We tested this hypothesis by bonding to transparent carious dentin containing occluded dentinal tubules. An experimental single-bottle, one-step self-etch adhesive was applied to flat surfaces of caries-affected dentin surrounded by sound dentin, with or without pulpal pressure. Resin-dentin interfaces were examined with TEM after silver-impregnation. Although caries-

Relationships between caries bacteria, host responses, and clinical signs and symptoms of pulpitis.

Knowledge of caries bacteria and the inflammatory responses they elicit in the dental pulp is prerequisite to our understanding of the pathogenesis of pulpitis. Recent advances in immunology and neurophysiology can now explain some of the clinical manifestations of pulpitis. The purpose of this review is twofold. The first purpose is to review the literature of the caries microflora, the host immune responses they elicit, and how they do so. The relationship between both proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines and pulpitis is discussed. The proinflammatory properties of lipoteichoic ac

Pulp-dentin biology in restorative dentistry. Part 5: Clinical management and tissue changes associated with wear and trauma.

Tooth wear occurs during normal mastication. Pathologic wear, including abrasion and erosion, may also take place. Formation of reactionary and reparative dentin and obturation of dentinal tubules are biologic responses that compensate for the loss of tissue. Physical trauma to teeth will affect the blood supply to the pulp. Extensive physical trauma may result in the formation of mineralized, often bonelike tissue in the pulp chamber. Minor trauma, such as that associated with orthodontic tooth movement, may exert transient effects on the pulp or it may result in permanent structural changes.

Comparison of Mast Cell Count in Oral Epithelial Dysplasia and Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Dentin bonding with etch-and-rinse adhesives involves demineralizing the 5-8µm of the surface dentin to create micro space for resin infiltration. The presence of continuous fluid movement in dentin tubules and positive pulpal pressure prevents complete water replacement by resin monomers. This results in areas of demineralized dentin, which contain collagen fibers without resin infiltration. The exposed collage fibers are subjected to enzymatic degradation leading to less durable hybrid layer. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the remineralizing effect

Aspects of dentinal and pulpal pain. Pain of dentinal and pulpal origin--a review for the clinician.

Recent advances in understanding the mechanisms of pain arising from the dental pulp serve to benefit patients by improving the clinician's ability to diagnose and treat pain. There are two types of pain arising from the pulp which are mediated by entirely different nerve fibres, each with their own individual characteristics. One is a short, sharp fast pain which is induced by stimuli which cause a rapid fluid flow within the dentinal tubules. Such stimuli include cold, heat, air, drilling, and osmotic stimuli. Once the affected teeth are identified, they can often be treated by sealing the o

Sensing a sensor: identifying the mechanosensory function of primary cilia.

Over the past decade, primary cilia have emerged as the premier means by which cells sense and transduce mechanical stimuli. Primary cilia are sensory organelles that have been shown to be vitally involved in the mechanosensation of urine in the renal nephron, bile in the hepatic biliary system, digestive fluid in the pancreatic duct, dentin in dental pulp, lacunocanalicular fluid in bone and cartilage, and blood in vasculature. The prevalence of primary cilia among mammalian cell types is matched by the tremendously varied disease states caused by both structural and functional defects in cil

Multifunctional poly(alkyl methacrylate) films for dental care.

Towards the evaluation of non-permanent dental coatings for their capacity to impart dental-care benefits, thin films of a homologous series of comb-like poly(alkyl methacrylate)s (ethyl to octadecyl) have been deposited, from aqueous latex formulations, onto dentally relevant substrates. AFM studies have shown that the thickness (40-300 nm) and surface roughness (8-12 nm) of coherent polymer films are influenced by the degree of polymerization and by the length of the pendant chain. Of the polymers under consideration, poly(butyl methacrylate) formed a close-packed film that conferred to dent

In vitro performance of a nanobiocomposite scaffold containing boron-modified bioactive glass nanoparticles for dentin regeneration.

Every year, many dental restoration methods are carried out in the world and most of them do not succeed. High cost of these restorations and rejection possibility of the implants are main drawbacks. For this reason, a regenerative approach for repairing the damaged dentin-pulp complex or generating a new tissue is needed. In this study, the potential of three-dimensional cellulose acetate/oxidized pullulan/gelatin-based dentin-like constructs containing 10 or 20% bioactive glass nanoparticles was studied to explore their potential for dentin regeneration. Preparation and characterization of biomineralizing dentin bonding primer based on bioactive amphiphilic raspberry-like nanoparticles.

BACKGROUND: Incomplete resin coverage of demineralized collagen can compromise dentin bond durability. This study developed a biomineralizing dentin bonding primer incorporating bioactive amphiphilic raspberry-like nanoparticles (BRPs) to enhance biomineralization and dentin bond strength. METHODS: BRPs were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nitrogen (N2) adsorption experiments. The ions release from BRPs was measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), while the mineralization was evaluated using SEM and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Subsequently,

Cytokine signalling in rat pulp interstitial fluid and transcapillary fluid exchange during lipopolysaccharide-induced acute inflammation.

The dental pulp consists of loose connective tissue encased in rigid dentinal walls. Because of its topography the tissue has low interstitial compliance and limited capacity to expand during fluid volume changes. Due to limitations regarding access to interstitial fluid, basic knowledge on transcapillary fluid transport parameters is lacking for this organ. The scope of this project was dual: first we aimed at establishing a method for isolation of pulp interstitial fluid (IF), and second we applied the method in rats subjected to lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced endotoxaemia. The aim was to
