The ghost joint: transient osteoporosis of the hip.

Seven adult patients identified as having idiopathic transient osteoporosis of the hip (TOH) are reported. TOH is an uncommon entity, most often seen in women during the third trimester of pregnancy and in middle-aged men. It is characterized by groin pain, limited hip range of motion, nonspecific laboratory findings, localized radiographic evidence of osteopenia, and spontaneous recovery usually within two to nine months. Diagnosis remains dependent on clinical recognition and x-ray confirmation. Radioisotope scanning aids in the diagnosis; both bone and synovial biopsies are often less produ

Hypervitaminosis A in a child from megadosing.

Hypervitaminosis A developed in a 2-year-9-month-old boy after his mother gave him 6,338 IU/kg/day vitamin A for 5 months. The clinical features included irritability, xerosis of the skin and mucous membranes, pruritus, bone pain, and loss of ambulation. The bone scan showed involvement of more bones than was apparent on the roentgenograms. A prompt diagnosis depended on an accurate history of excessive vitamin intake, and the serum vitamin A level confirmed the diagnosis.

Creatine/creatinine ratio and myostatin as biomarkers to monitor muscle function in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy patients.

OBJECTIVE: Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is characterized by progressive muscle wasting leading to early loss of motor function. Functional tests monitor disease progression and serve as clinical trial endpoints, but are influenced by maturation in younger patients, variability, and patient motivation. Blood biomarkers, that can predict disease progression and objectively evaluate treatment responses, offer a valuable alternative. In this study, we investigated whether longitudinal observations of biomarkers myostatin and the creatine/creatinine ratio (Cr/Crn) are associated with functional

[Orthopedic management of spina bifida].

BACKGROUND: Spina bifida is associated with congenital deformities, such as kyphosis, spinal malformations, teratological hip dislocations, clubfeet, vertical talus and also with acquired deformities due to muscle imbalance and impaired biomechanics. The degree of the acquired deformities and the mobility of the patient depend on the level of the spinal lesion. DIAGNOSTICS: Neurological symptoms are mostly asymmetric and there is an inconsistent correlation between the anatomical level of the lesion and muscle function. Deficits of sensation are usually one to two levels lower than the motor

A comparison of the predictive therapeutic and undesired side-effects of the NMDA receptor antagonist, memantine, in mice.

Memantine (1-amino-3,5-dimethyl-adamantane) is the only clinically used NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) glutamate receptor antagonist. The present experiments were carried out to compare the dose-response for memantine's predictive therapeutic and side-effects in a variety of tests in C57BL/6J/Han mice, and to elucidate if tolerance may develop to them. Memantine produced a dose-dependent (2.5-15 mg/kg) antidepressant-like effect in the tail-suspension test (TST); this anti-immobility effect of 15 mg/kg of memantine appeared to persist with its sub-chronic administration (3 days, twice daily). Factors Mediating Outcome After Stroke: Gender, Thrombolysis, and Their Interaction.

Several studies, but not all, have shown that women benefit more from intravenous thrombolysis than men; few have accounted for pre-stroke mobility. Our aim was to determine whether there was an interaction between gender and thrombolysis treatment in 3-month modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score, after adjusting for pre-stroke mobility. We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 1390 consecutive ischemic stroke patients admitted between October 2012 and July 2015. The 3-month mRS was obtained from clinic visits. Thrombolysis-by-gender interaction was evaluated in univariate and multivariate a

Effects of acute caffeine on anxiety-related behavior in rats chronically exposed to the drug, with some evidence of possible withdrawal-reversal.

For 20days male and female PVG/c hooded rats were provided with caffeinated (approximately 50mg/kg/day) or unadulterated drinking water, and then their anxiety-related behavior was observed in an open field and elevated plus maze. Their choices of a brightness change were also observed in a Y maze to assess any caffeine effects on spatial memory. 24h later, all rats were tested again following an intraperitoneal injection of 50mg/kg acute caffeine, or vehicle. Earlier chronic caffeine decreased ambulation, walking, rearing, center occupancy and increased immobility in the open field thereby su

Decoding the Miss Daisy Syndrome: an examination of subjective responses to mobility change.

The subjective responses associated with personal life space and mobility status were explored. Thirty individuals participated in focus groups based on self-rated disability status, current places visited, and availability. Qualitative analyses revealed that most participants equated personal mobility with driving a vehicle. Attitudes concerning mobility status and preparedness for change varied based on disability level and personal experience. Fear of dependence from future mobility loss was prominent in all groups. Few participants acknowledged significant planning for future retirement fr

GDNF plasma levels in spina bifida: correlation with severity of spinal damage and motor function.

Glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is one of several powerful survival factors for spinal motoneurons that play a key role in sprouting, synaptic plasticity, and reorganization after spinal cord damage. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of GDNF in plasma of children with spina bifida (SB) and to determine its correlation with both the severity of spinal cord damage and the motor function of these patients. To measure the GDNF expression, we collected plasma samples from 152 children with SB and in 149 matched controls. Endogenous GDNF levels were quantified using a

Recent advances of glucocorticoids in the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Review).

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most common degenerative neuromuscular disease. The incidence of DMD in live births is 1/3,600-1/6,000. Although glucocorticoid-dependent medication is the mainstay treatment option for DMD, a standard treatment regimen has yet to be determined. The present review discusses the literature on the timing, methods and courses of glucocorticoid treatment for DMD. The review highlights the importance of the immediate commencement of glucocorticoid treatment following the diagnosis of DMD, with weekend-only administration being advantageous. Adherence to long
