Molecular characterization and seasonal, sex-associated expression patterns of HSP genes in Eurygaster integriceps (Hemiptera: Scutelleridae).

Seasonal environmental variation may be associated with heat-shock protein (HSP) transcription in insects with annual diapause cycles. The Sunn pest, Eurygaster integriceps (Puton), occupies contrasting field and shelter habitats across its univoltine life cycle. We combined transcriptome-guided annotation, motif and conserved-domain analysis, localization prediction, fragment-based structural modeling, phylogenetic placement, and RT-qPCR to characterize partial Hsp60, Hsp70, and Hsp90 sequences and compare their whole-body transcript abundance among 4 field-sampled groups and between sexes. Lyme Disease Models of Tick-Mouse Dynamics with Seasonal Variation in Births, Deaths, and Tick Feeding.

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States impacting the Northeast and Midwest at the highest rates. Recently, it has become established in southeastern and south-central regions of Canada. In these regions, Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted to humans by an infected Ixodes scapularis tick. Understanding the parasite-host interaction is critical as the white-footed mouse is one of the most competent reservoir for B. burgdorferi. The cycle of infection is driven by tick larvae feeding on infected mice that molt into infected nymph

Microsatellite characterization of subspecies and their hybrids in Culex pipiens complex (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes along a north-south transect in the central United States.

Mosquitoes in the Culex pipiens complex, Cx. p. pipiens L. and Cx. p. quinquefasciatus Say are morphologically similar and important vectors of West Nile and St. Louis Encephalitis viruses in the United States. The subspecies differ with respect to overwintering strategies, with Cx. p. pipiens entering diapause in response to winter conditions and Cx. p. quinquefasciatus lacking this ability, yet they hybridize when found in sympatry. Specimens (n = 646) were collected using gravid traps set along a transect from New Orleans, LA, to Chicago, IL. Microsatellite markers were used to: genetically

Kinetics of oestrus ovis infection and activity of adult flies.

Oestrus Ovis is a common sheep parasite in the Mediterranean region. This study was carried out in the Ebro River Valley near Zaragoza (northeast Spain) using tracer animals to describe the seasons when infestation is more likely. Based on that information and an analysis of the evolution of the parasite within the host, we suggest the most appropriate time for treatment. Adult instars appeared in May until November and there was a diapause beginning in October-November and as least until February, so it is suggested than sheep be treated with larvicide in December.

Endometrial luminal epithelial cells sense embryo elongation in the roe deer independent of interferon-tau†.

Numerous intrauterine changes take place across species during embryo development. Following fertilization in July/August, the European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) embryo undergoes diapause until embryonic elongation in December/January. Embryonic elongation prior to implantation is a common feature among ungulates. Unlike many other ruminants, the roe deer embryo does not secrete interferon-tau (IFNτ). This provides the unique opportunity to unravel IFNτ-independent signaling pathways associated with maternal recognition of pregnancy (MRP). This study aimed at identifying the cell-type-spe

Epidemiology, chronobiology and taxonomic updates of Rhinoestrus spp. infestation in horses of Sardinia Isle, Western Mediterranean (Italy).

From January to December 2008, 265 horses slaughtered in Sardinia (Italy) were examined for the presence of Rhinoestrus spp. (Diptera: Oestridae) through the examination of the nasal cavities and pharynges. Larvae were detected in 49% of the horses, with a mean intensity of infestation of 16.09 and abundance of 7.95. A total of 2108 larvae were collected, 66% of which were classified in first instar (L1), 22% in second instar (L2) and 12% in third instar (L3). The most frequent localization of larvae was the ethmoid, while the less one the larynx. According to the dynamics of Rhinoestrus larva

Ontogenetic variability of the Siberian silk moth, Dendrolimus sibiricus.

INTRODUCTION: The Siberian silk moth Dendrolimus sibiricus is a major boreal defoliator whose outbreak dynamics vary with the proportion of larvae following 1-year versus 2-year life cycles, yet the physiological basis of this ontogenetic variability remains unclear. METHODS: We generated tissue-specific RNA sequencing datasets from male and female larvae expressing 1-year or 2-year life cycles, dissected into head, gut, and fat body tissue sets (49 libraries), and quantified life-cycle effects using principal component analysis and differential expression with functional enrichment. RESULTS

Aquatic community structure as sentinel of recent environmental changes unraveled from lake sedimentary records from the Atacama Desert, Chile.

The Atacama Desert (21-26°S) is currently one of the driest places on Earth and metal(loid)s are of special concern for this region, which hosts the largest-known porphyry copper deposits produced in Chile. Evidence of past environmental conditions is commonly preserved in natural archives, such as lacustrine sediments. Sediment records obtained from Inca Coya Lake (22°20'S-68°35'W, 2534 m.a.s.l.), a small lake located in the Atacama Desert, reflected the evolution of regional mining activity during the 20th century and sedimentation associated with decadal climate variability. We studied the

The associations among the breeding performance of Osmia bicornis L. (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), burden of pathogens and nest parasites along urbanisation gradient.

Urban environments may negatively affect the development of organisms. In host-pathogen/parasite systems, this impact may lead to increased manifestations of pathogens that decrease the success of their hosts in urban environments compared to rural ones. We tested this hypothesis in the solitary bee Osmia bicornis L. We estimated the development of bees, their reproductive success and the manifestation of different pathogens and nest parasites along an urbanisation gradient. We conducted the experiment in an urbanisation gradient in sites representing three environments: urban, suburban and ru

The contribution of Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes to transmission and persistence of West Nile virus in North America.

Mosquitoes within the Culex pipiens complex have been implicated as major vectors of West Nile virus (WNV) in North America due to their seasonal abundance, vector competence and high field infection rates. However, the role of Cx. p. pipiens complex mosquitoes in enzootic amplification of WNV among avian hosts and epidemic transmission to humans varies throughout its geographical distribution. In the northeastern United States, Cx. p. pipiens is recognized as the primary enzootic vector responsible for amplification of virus among wild bird populations. However, because this mosquito is stron

Factors affecting entomopathogenic nematodes (Steinernematidae) for control of overwintering codling moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in fruit bins.

Fruit bins infested with diapausing codling moth larvae, Cydia pomonella (L.), are a potential source of reinfestation of orchards and may jeopardize the success of mating disruption programs and other control strategies. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) were tested as a potential means of control that could be applied at the time bins are submerged in dump tanks. Diapausing cocooned codling moth larvae in miniature fruit bins were highly susceptible to infective juveniles (IJs) of Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) and Steinernema feltiae (Filipjev) in a series of experiments. Cocooned larvae

Temperature-driven population abundance model for Culex pipiens and Culex restuans (Diptera: Culicidae).

We develop a temperature-driven abundance model for West Nile virus (WNV) vector species, Culex pipiens and Culex restuans. Temperature-dependent response functions for mosquito development, mortality, and diapause were formulated based on results from available laboratory and field studies. Numerical results compared to observed mosquito trap counts from 2004-2016 demonstrate the ability of our model to predict the observed trend of the mosquito population over a single season in the Peel Region, Ontario. The model has potential to be used as a real-time mosquito abundance forecasting tool wi

Seasonal distribution of larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma tigrinum Koch, 1844 (Acari: Ixodidae).

The seasonality of immature stages of Amblyomma tigrinum was studied in an area of the Chaco phytogeographical province in Córdoba, Argentina by monthly collection of larvae from ground feeding birds and Sigmodontinae rodents, and nymphs from Caviidae rodents from May 2005 to April 2007. An apparent peak of abundance was found from December to May but differences with other months of the year were not significant (P>0.05). These and previous results suggest that the parasitic stages of A. trigrinum are active throughout the year and has more than one generation per year at the study site. Its

Photoperiodic responses of Sahelian malaria mosquitoes Anopheles coluzzii and An. arabiensis.

BACKGROUND: Throughout large parts of sub-Saharan Africa, seasonal malaria transmission follows mosquito density, approaching zero during the dry season and peaking during the wet season. The mechanisms by which malaria mosquitoes survive the long dry season, when no larval sites are available remain largely unknown, despite being long recognized as a critical target for vector control. Previous work in the West African Sahel has led to the hypothesis that Anopheles coluzzii (formerly M-form Anopheles gambiae) undergoes aestivation (dry-season diapause), while Anopheles gambiae (s.s.) (formerl

Direct observation of fat crystallization in a living fly by X-ray diffraction: fat crystallization does not cause the fly's instantaneous death, but ice formation does.

A cool-temperate fly, Drosophila triauraria, stores fat, triacylglycerol (TAG), primarily in the fat storage organ, the fat body, and then diapauses to pass the winter in imago stage. TAG crystallization and ice formation taking place in a living fly by lowering temperatures were studied, in order to clarify the relationship between crystallizations and the fly's death at lower temperatures. X-ray diffraction, a direct non-invasive method, was used to detect the liquid-to-crystal transformations of TAG and water. During cooling, TAG crystallization preceded ice formation. It was also found tha

Pairing ultrasonography with endocrinology to elucidate underlying mechanisms of successful pregnancy in the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus).

Reproductive success is one of the central tenets of conservation management programs, yet the inability to study underlying physiological processes in a minimally-invasive manner and the unpredictable nature of wild animal populations leaves large gaps in our knowledge of factors critical to successful reproduction in wild species. This study integrated ultrasonography of the reproductive tract and analysis of reproductive hormones in 172 northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) to identify intrinsic factors associated with reinitiating embryonic growth at the end of diapause. Within the firs

[Observation on the early development of inoculated Brugia malayi microfilariae in mosquitoes].

This paper reports the early development and variation of inoculated Brugia malayi microfilariae in 3 groups of mosquitoes, i. e. young Anopheles sinensis, young Culex quinquefasciatus and old Cx. quinquefasciatus. Significant differences were observed among these groups. Sixty hours after inoculation, the percentage of normally developing filarial larvae in young An. sinensis was 72.3%; the percentage of melanized microfilariae in young Cx. quinquefasciatus was 75.4% and the percentage of filarial larvae which developed abnormally or remained in diapause status in old Cx. quinquefasciatus was

Transcriptional Response to a Dauer-Inducing Ascaroside Cocktail in Late L1 in C. elegans.

The dauer diapause stage in C. elegans is a non-feeding alternative to the L3 larval stage that is highly resistant to harsh environmental conditions. The decision to enter dauer is a two-step process. First, L1 larvae encounter adverse conditions such as lack of food or overcrowding and decide to enter the L2d rather than the L2 stage. Second, L2d worms that continue to experience disadvantageous conditions decide to enter dauer instead of L3. Here, we have used RNA-seq to characterize the transcriptional response to a cocktail of dauer-inducing ascaroside pheromones at the late L1 stage as w

Genome and Ontogenetic-Based Transcriptomic Analyses of the Flesh Fly, Sarcophaga bullata.

The flesh fly, Sarcophaga bullata, is a widely-used model for examining the physiology of insect diapause, development, stress tolerance, neurobiology, and host-parasitoid interactions. Flies in this taxon are implicated in myiasis (larval infection of vertebrates) and feed on carrion, aspects that are important in forensic studies. Here we present the genome of S. bullata, along with developmental- and reproduction-based RNA-Seq analyses. We predict 15,768 protein coding genes, identify orthology in relation to closely related flies, and establish sex and developmental-specific gene sets base

[Aedes aegypti (L.): importance of its bioecology in the transmission of dengue and other arboviruses. I].

The bioecological parameters which are of special importance in the epidemiology of Dengue, Yellow Fever, and other arboviruses are discussed. Three levels are retained: the nature of Aedes aegypti-man contacts, the susceptibility of the mosquito to the pathogen and multiplication of the latter, and the transmission. The trophic preferences, the density variations, the daily survival rate, the egg diapause, and man influences are the main vector-dependent ecological factors. Temperature and genetical nature of viral and mosquito strains are particularly important in susceptibility and multipli
