It has been almost 2 years since Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast. These 2 years can be characterized by constant struggle and pain as the people try to reattain some semblance of life as they knew it before Katrina struck. Some have chosen to leave their ancestral homes, homes where they were raised and where they, in turn, raised their own families. Those who did leave are able, in some way, to reestablish some semblance of normality, but those who stayed showed manifestations of and dealt with psychological trauma. These manifestations include regression, inattentiveness, aggressiven

Nurses are one of the professional groups that have important duties in social disasters, and they are constantly exposed to the details of the traumatic situation, sometimes physically and sometimes by listening. To understand the severity of the trauma caused by this exposure, it is important to understand the emotions and though

AIM: To report a review and narrative synthesis conducted to analyse and evaluate nurses' preparedness to respond to a bioterrorist event.
BACKGROUND: The anthrax attack on the USA in 2001 resulted in the development of global response strategies for future bioterrorist events. However, despite these actions, it remains unclear whether nurses are prepared to respond to such events.
DATA SOURCES: A search for relevant research articles was conducted using the MEDLINE, CINAHL, BNI, and EMBASE databases to locate articles published in the period 1996-March 2010.
DESIGN: Narrative synthesis.

The nurses' perceptions of their organizational culture and its impact on nurses' health were also explored. A three-round Delphi study was conducted with 36 expert group participants from six South Korean tertiary hospitals. Overall, 36, 35, and 33 participants responded in the first, second, and third rounds, respec

Assessing help-seeking patterns following disaster provides useful information about who needs professional help the most, who is willing to seek help, and who is reluctant to seek help. 231 Japanese evacuees from the Miyake Island volcanic eruption (2000) participated in this study (ages 20-93, average age 59.52). Ten months after the evacuation, participants were mailed questionnaires which elicited demographic data, disaster experiences, help-seeking patterns, and psychological symptoms (Post-traumatic stress disorder and depression). Help-seeking patterns were categorized as: professionals

Since 1982 the St. Radboud hospital, Nijmegen, has a contiguity plan for peace-time disasters which describes the way to deal with great numbers of patients of traffic-, environmental- or industrial-calamities. The function of the commander, the separate hospital services, the medical and nursing triage team and administrative services are clearly delineated. Also is indicated how to organise communication between hospital, municipality, police and fire-brigade. The plan also provides possibilities for information towards press and relatives of the victims.

In a national disaster, the medical profession would lose physicians and auxiliary personnel and would need assistance. Canada's 22,000 physicians and 85,000 nurses are located for the most part in potential target areas. Survivors among Canada's 6396 dentists could supply 30% reinforcement. The dentist's training, his manual dexterity and experience acquired in the management of hemorrhage, shock, débridement, suturing, reduction and immobilization of fractures, and control of pain and infection would be valuable. Additional functions he could perform would be first-aid, including but not lim

The Wound, Ostomy, and Continence (WOC) nurses undertake critical duties after an earthquake. These tasks include emergency triage and treatment, prevention and management of infection, prevention of organ loss, psychological support to the injured, and close cooperation and support with other health care professionals. Although WOC nurses have received advanced training in wound management in the basic training and certified training programs they receive, wound management in earthquake conditions is not a part of their training. To prevent complications and improve patient outcomes, WOC nurs

Although the use of microorganisms as weapons is as old a practice as war itself, the sense of our collective vulnerability to these agents has seldom been as great. The events of late 2001 demonstrated that the United States is vulnerable to terrorist attack carried out by highly motivated, organized, funded, and trained individuals. It is our collective good fortune that the perpetrator of the anthrax mailings was not bent on destruction of the scale witnessed on September 11, 2001. Because acute care and critical care nurses are on the forefront of community disease surveillance, they must

Due to the events of September 11, 2001 and the bioterrorism-related anthrax episodes, the United States has escalated efforts to better prepare the nation for terrorist attacks. Early recognition and management of a biological attack are largely dependent on the clinical expertise of frontline health care personnel. Nurses are recognized as an integral part of this team. Schools of nursing should integrate bioterrorism education into their curricula to address this growing frontier of health care management. This article outlines the necessary components of bioterrorism education for nurses,

Emergency preparedness is a critical component of patient safety in outpatient dialysis settings, where patients rely on life-sustaining treatments multiple times each week. Disruptions caused by natural disasters, infrastructure failures, or other emergencies can threaten the continuity of dialysis care and place this vulnerable population at significant risk. Tabletop exercises have emerged as an effective strategy for strengthening emergency readiness by allowing health care teams to rehearse response procedures in a structured, low-risk environment. These scenario-based simulations promote
