OBJECTIVE: Given the lack of specific evaluation indices, it is difficult to determine whether to transpose or abandon remnant ears in lobule-type microtia reconstruction. The authors illuminate referable parameters beneficial for proper treatment of remnant ear in an efficient manner.
METHODS: A series of 359 lobule-type microtia patients underwent autogenous costal cartilage auricular reconstruction between 2016 and 2021. Fourteen measuring points and defined distances as well as six ratios of specific distances based on position, plumpness, similarity and the width-to-length ratio of the r

Autologous ear construction for microtia creates an auricle using a costal cartilage framework. To separate the construct from the mastoid, the most common methods incorporate the use of fascial flaps or skin grafting. The authors describe a V-Y skin and subcutaneous scalp advancement flap for ear elevation as part of autologous ear construction for microtia. The method is simple and reliable and offers advantages compared to other techniques.

OBJECTIVE: Aesthetic reconstruction of the external ear is challenging due to the complex anatomical shape of the auricle. Recently, artificial scaffolds such as Medpor (Stryker, Kalamasoo, MI, USA) have become widely used in ear reconstruction. However, the Medpor scaffold is stiffer than the natural ear, which may lead to discomfort, and moreover has uniform design for every patient. In this study, we investigated whether three-dimensional (3D)-printed artificial polyurethane (PU) scaffolds are suitable for auricular reconstruction.
METHODS: PU scaffolds were fabricated using 3D printing ac

Reconstruction of the external ear for microtia remains one of the most challenging clinical problems in reconstructive surgery. Whether the reconstructive effort replicates a normal ear relates to making a delicate ear cartilage framework and achieving a firm projection of the constructed auricle. In this study, we present a new technique to create a firm elevation. 46 patients with congenital microtia, 30 male and 16 female, are included in this series. We used a modified Nagata's two-stage technique. In the second stage, instead of using a temporoparietal fascial flap to wrap a cartilage we

Surgery of moderate cup ear deformities, severe cup ear deformities and microtia is described. In cases of unilateral atresia auris we usually do not perform middle ear surgery. In cases of bilateral atresia the child is fitted with a bone conducting hearing aid as soon as possible and operated on when the child is 4 to 5 years old. After bilateral middle ear surgery we reconstruct the auricle at the age of 5 or 6 years.

Nagata's two-stage methods for ear reconstruction of congenital microtia have been widely used. In this study, we present another option to the second stage in Nagata's method. After the implanted auricle was separated from the bed, instead of using a temporoparietal fascial flap to wrap a cartilage wedge, we developed a new alternative using the retroauricular fascial flap wrapping an EH (a mixture of epoxide acrylate malelic and hydroxyapatite) composite wedge. In addition, it is quite often that, from a frontal view in the Chinese population, the upper and lower parts of the auricle are mor

Two profoundly hard-of-hearing and deaf patients were examined by non-invasive extracranial magnetic stimulation (EMS) in an effort to determine whether EMS could evoke auditory sensations. The patients were fitted with standard earplugs and were stimulated at the auricle, the mastoid and the temporal lobe area. The threshold of auditory sensation (TAS) was determined at each stimulus position and found to be approximately 20-40% of the maximum EMS level (2.0 Tesla). The TAS was generally lowest in mastoid stimulation, but was variable, and dependent on the angle and position of the stimulatin

Bats host a diverse assemblage of ectoparasites that occupy specific anatomical microhabitats, yet the histological effects of these associations remain poorly documented. Here, we report a case of mite infestation of the external ear in the Neotropical bats species Carollia perspicillata and Carollia brevicauda, with a detailed histological characterisation of the auricle and inner ear of C. perspicillata. Bats were captured during biodiversity monitoring programmes in Antioquia, Colombia, and mites were collected and identified morphologically. Histological and histochemical analyses of ear

The absence of ears in children is a global problem. An implant made of costal cartilage is the standard procedure for ear reconstruction; however, side effects such as pneumothorax, loss of thoracic cage shape, and respiratory complications have been documented. Three-dimensional (3D) printing allows the generation of biocompatible scaffolds that mimic the shape, mechanical strength, and architecture of the native extracellular matrix necessary to promote new elastic cartilage formation. We report the potential use of a 3D-bioprinted poly-ε-caprolactone (3D-PCL) auricle-shaped framework seede

The auricle is susceptible to various injuries due to its location and projection from the scalp. The unique contours of the external ear makes reconstruction a challenging endeavor. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of auricular reconstruction, based on the depth, location, and size of injury. Strategies for reconstructing superficial, composite, and full-thickness injuries are discussed in relation to the location of the defect. Targeted reconstructive options for injuries of the upper, middle, and lower thirds of the auricle are outlined. Methods for total auricular reconstruct

The right temporal bone of a 6-month-old patient with oculoauriculovertebral dysplasia (Goldenhar's syndrome) was examined histopathologically. The most striking abnormalities were deformity of the auricle, atresia of the external auditory canal, severe malformation of middle ear structures, and incomplete development of the oval window. No inner ear abnormalities were identified in this case.

The current gold standard for auricular reconstruction after microtia or ear trauma is the autologous cartilage graft with an autologous skin flap overlay. Harvesting autologous cartilage requires an additional surgery that may result in donor area complications. In addition, autologous cartilage is limited and the auricular reconstruction requires complex sculpting, which requires excellent clinical skill and is very time consuming. This work explores the use of 3D printing technology to fabricate bioactive artificial auricular cartilage using chondrocyte-laden gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) an

Petrified pinna is clinically characterized by an unbending rigid stone hard ear. Usually, the majority of the patients are asymptomatic but occasionally may experience pain from local pressure while sleeping. This uncommon condition is reported to be in association with local trauma, hypothermia, inflammation, and several life-threatening endocrine and systemic diseases. Awareness and knowledge to identify this entity is essential as it might be helpful in treating several systemic conditions and thus any untoward events.
