Parental experience of the neuromotor development of children with congenital heart disease: an exploratory qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Children with severe congenital heart disease (CHD) are a group of children at risk for neurodevelopmental impairments. Motor development is the first domain to show a delay during the first year of life and may significantly contribute to parental concerns, stress, and difficulties in early child-parent attachment. Thus, the aim of the study was to better understand the wishes and concerns of parents of children with CHD and explore their experience of their children's neuromotor development in the first year of life. METHODS: In this qualitative study, fourteen families were rec

Disengagement From Early Intervention Services for Psychosis: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Therapeutic benefits associated with early services for psychosis are influenced by the degree to which participants engage in treatment. The main objective of this review was to analyze rates of disengagement in early psychosis services and identify predictors of disengagement in these settings. METHODS: A systematic search for studies published in the 1966-2019 period was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, EBSCO, Ovid, and Embase. The Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies scale was used to assess the methodological quality of reports identified in this search. A revi

Response to Intervention (RtI) Model: a promising alternative for identifying students with learning disabilities?

Until recently, in the United States, the traditional way to identify students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) was through the discrepancy model where student IQs were compared to their level of achievement. However, educators and researchers alike have questioned this model as a means to define and identify students with SLD. The 2004 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) includes the use of response to intervention (RtI) as possible alternative to the intelligence-achievement discrepancy for identifying SLD. Core components of RtI in

[Intervention in children with pragmatic language and communication disorders].

AIMS: In this paper we analyse the educational and therapeutic needs of children who present pragmatic disorders in language and communication. DEVELOPMENT: Pragmatic disorders in language and communication stand apart from the other disorders affecting the remaining aspects of language development. Their less specific nature goes beyond the purely linguistic domain and involves wide areas of the patient's affective and social development. CONCLUSIONS: Not only is it necessary to adapt the general model of speech therapy intervention, but also to include it within a set of pedagogical (based

"It's Like Making Reflective Practice More of the Heart of Who We Are": An Exploration of Facilitators and Barriers to Implementing Reflective Supervision in State Pre-K.

High-quality supervision for teachers in early care and education (ECE) is essential for building positive teacher-child relationships and enhancing ECE program quality, which in turn promotes healthy social-emotional and academic development in young children. Reflective supervision (RS) is a process-oriented and relationship-centered supervisory approach that has growing empirical evidence supporting its use. As the evidence base for RS continues to expand, and early childhood-serving settings-including ECE-increasingly consider this approach, understanding whether RS is likely to be routine

F-words and early intervention ingredients for non-ambulant children with cerebral palsy: A scoping review.

AIM: To explore the ingredients of early interventions provided to young children with cerebral palsy (CP) who are classified in Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels IV and V, and to identify the 'F-words' addressed by the interventions. METHOD: Searches were completed in four electronic databases. Inclusion criteria were the original experimental studies that fitted the following PCC components: population, young children (aged 0-5 years, at least 30% of the sample) with CP and significant motor impairment (GMFCS levels IV or V, at least 30% of the sample); concept, non-

A systematic review of speech, language and communication interventions for children with Down syndrome from 0 to 6 years.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language acquisition can be a challenge for young children with Down syndrome (DS), and while early intervention is important, we do not know what early interventions exist and how effective they may be. AIMS: To systematically review existing early speech, language and communication interventions for young children with DS from birth up to 6 years, and to investigate their effectiveness in improving speech, language and communication outcomes in children with DS. Other outcomes are changes in parental behaviour and their responsiveness METHODS & PROCEDURES: We conducte

Conclusions and implications for early intervention.

Each chapter in this volume supports the assumption that the quantity and quality of sleep is an essential building block for the architecture of learning in early life. Diverse areas affected by sleep include language, motor skills, problem solving, and memory, which show greater improvements when adequate and healthy sleep pervades a child's routine. Studies described in this volume expand our understanding of the impact of sleep both for short term skill improvement and for long-term developmental gains. The interdisciplinary content of this volume brings practical and translational informa

Multi-center rater-blinded study of early intervention with the Hand Incubator for breast cancer-related lymphedema (the BEAT-EDEMA trial): Proposal of a research protocol.

Postoperative lymphedema is considered irreversible once it has developed, and significantly lowers the patient's quality of life. However, lymphatic function has recently been clarified, and it is possible that lymphedema can be cured if early treatment is started. This two-arm randomized clinical trial (UMIN000026124) will prospectively evaluate 24 patients with early-stage breast cancer-related lymphedema at the Nagoya University Hospital and Aichi Cancer Center Hospital. The eligibility criteria will be patients who are diagnosed with stage 0-1 breast cancer-related lymphedema, as defined

Early Adverse Experiences and the Developing Brain.

Children exposed to various forms of adversity early in life are at increased risk for a broad range of developmental difficulties, affecting both cognitive and emotional adjustment. We review a growing body of evidence suggesting that exposure to adverse circumstances affects the developing brain in ways that increase risk for a myriad of problems. We focus on two forms of adversity, one in which children are exposed to childhood maltreatment in family environments, and another in which children are exposed to extreme psychosocial deprivation in contexts of institutional rearing. We discuss w

An Examination of the Efficacy of a Multitiered Intervention on Early Reading Outcomes for First Grade Students at Risk for Reading Difficulties.

This article presents findings of an efficacy trial examining the effect of a multitiered instruction and intervention model on first grade at-risk students' reading outcomes. Schools (N = 16) were randomly assigned to the treatment or control condition. In the fall of Grade 1, students were assigned to an instructional tier on the basis of Stanford Achievement Test-10th Edition scores (31st percentile and above = Tier 1; from the 10th to the 30th percentile = Tier 2). In both conditions, students identified as at risk (i.e., Tier 2; n = 267) received 90 min of whole group instruction (Tier 1)

Reading and language intervention for children at risk of dyslexia: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Intervention studies for children at risk of dyslexia have typically been delivered preschool, and show short-term effects on letter knowledge and phoneme awareness, with little transfer to literacy. METHODS: This randomised controlled trial evaluated the effectiveness of a reading and language intervention for 6-year-old children identified by research criteria as being at risk of dyslexia (n = 56), and their school-identified peers (n = 89). An Experimental group received two 9-week blocks of daily intervention delivered by trained teaching assistants; the Control group received

Pediatric Prevention: Academic Behavior.

Many children in the United States are performing below basic standards in reading, mathematics, and writing. Children at risk for academic problems often have comorbid classroom behavior problems and/or are diagnosed with high-incidence disabilities. Early intervention to prevent academic problems is a key goal of school-wide response-to-intervention models. The goal of school-based instructional intervention is to increase children's strength of responding so basic academic skills can be combined to solve more complex tasks. Parents and caregivers can support intervention efforts at school b

Pediatric Oral Health Online Education for Rural and Migrant Head Start Programs in the United States.

Children living in rural and migrant areas in the United States disproportionately suffer from poor oral health. Additionally, there continues to be a shortage of pediatric dentists practicing in rural/migrant areas. The purpose of this formative research study was to assess whether staff, teachers and families from rural/migrant Head Start/Early Head Start (HS/EHS) programs in California were receptive to oral health online education workshops conducted by pediatric dental residents who were assisted by bilingual (English and Spanish) community oral health workers (COHWs). Our findings sugges

The effect of the Infant Health and Development Program on special education use at school age.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of an intensive early intervention on special service use at school-age. STUDY DESIGN: The Infant Health and Development Program was a randomized controlled trial of an intervention for low birth weight (<2500 g) infants ages 0-3 years. We used multivariate logistic regression to test the association between intervention and risk of special education, remedial reading and math, and speech therapy at age 8 years. We also compared rates of service use between study arms among those with learning disabilities (LDs). RESULTS: There were 875 complete cases at 8-

Early intervention influences positively quality of life as reported by prematurely born children at age nine and their parents; a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The Tromsø Intervention Study on Preterms evaluates an early, sensitizing intervention given to parents of prematurely born children (birth-weight < 2000 g). The current study investigated the potential influence of the intervention on children's self-reported and parental proxy-reported quality of life (QoL) at children's age of nine. METHODS: Participants were randomized to either intervention (PI, n = 72) or preterm control (PC, n = 74) in the neonatal care unit, while healthy term-born infants were recruited to a term reference group (TR, n = 75). The intervention was a modifi
