Cranial asymmetry in odontocetes: a facilitator of sonic exploration?

Directional cranial asymmetry is an intriguing condition that has evolved in all odontocetes which has mostly been associated with sound production for echolocation. In this study, we investigated how cranial asymmetry varies across odontocete species both in terms of quality (i.e., shape), and quantity (magnitude of deviation from symmetry). We investigated 72 species across all ten families of Odontoceti using two-dimensional geometric morphometrics. The average asymmetric shape was largely consistent across odontocetes - the rostral tip, maxillae, antorbital notches and braincase, as well a

Wingtip folds and ripples on saturniid moths create decoy echoes against bat biosonar.

Sensory coevolution has equipped certain moth species with passive acoustic defenses to counter predation by echolocating bats.1,2 Some large silkmoths (Saturniidae) possess curved and twisted biosonar decoys at the tip of elongated hindwing tails.3,4 These are thought to create strong echoes that deflect biosonar-guided bat attacks away from the moth's body to less essential parts of their anatomy. We found that closely related silkmoths lacking such hindwing decoys instead often possess intriguing ripples and folds on the conspicuously lobed tips of their forewings. The striking analogy of t

Enhancing prestin oligomerization for superior sonogenetics.

Background: Sonogenetics enables non-invasive control of cellular activity using ultrasound (US)-responsive proteins. Prestin, a motor protein from outer hair cells, can render cells responsive to US when ectopically expressed, offering potential therapeutic applications for neurodegenerative diseases and epilepsy. However, current prestin variants exhibit suboptimal oligomerization, reducing their efficacy in neuromodulation. This study aimed to enhance prestin sonogenetic performance by improving oligomerization. Methods: We screened four echolocating bat prestin orthologs and point mutants

Predictive model of sperm whale prey capture attempts from time-depth data.

BACKGROUND: High-resolution sound and movement recording tags offer unprecedented insights into the fine-scale foraging behaviour of cetaceans, especially echolocating odontocetes, enabling the estimation of a series of foraging metrics. However, these tags are expensive, making them inaccessible to most researchers. Time-Depth Recorders (TDRs), which have been widely used to study diving and foraging behaviour of marine mammals, offer a more affordable alternative. Unfortunately, data collected by TDRs are bi-dimensional (time and depth only), so quantifying foraging effort from those data is

Maxilloturbinal Aids in Nasophonation in Horseshoe Bats (Chiroptera: Rhinolophidae).

Horseshoe bats (Family Rhinolophidae) show an impressive array of morphological traits associated with use of high duty cycle echolocation calls that they emit via their nostrils (nasophonation). Delicate maxilloturbinal bones inside the nasal fossa of horseshoe bats have a unique elongated strand-like shape unknown in other mammals. Maxilloturbinal strands also vary considerably in length and cross-sectional shape. In other mammals, maxilloturbinals help direct respired air and prevent respiratory heat and water loss. We investigated whether strand-shaped maxilloturbinals in horseshoe bats pe

Reference genomes and fossils revise bat family phylogeny and biogeography.

Bats are extraordinary among mammals, having uniquely evolved powered flight and laryngeal echolocation, along with disease resistance, extended healthspans and the ability to hibernate1. However, the evolutionary history of bats and the understanding of these adaptations remain unresolved. We analysed chromosome-level, long-read genome assemblies from 103 bat species, including 42 new assemblies, representing all 21 bat families. This dataset, expanded in scope and assembly quality, yielded a new bat phylogeny. We placed Myzopodidae as the earliest branch within Vespertilionoidea, and resolve

Frequency-modulated up-chirps produce larger evoked responses than down-chirps in the big brown bat auditory brainstem.

In many mammals, upward-sweeping frequency-modulated (FM) sounds (up-chirps) evoke larger auditory brainstem responses than downward-sweeping sounds (down-chirps). To determine if similar effects occur in FM echolocating bats, auditory evoked responses (AERs) in big brown bats in response to up-chirps and down-chirps at different chirp durations and levels were recorded. Even though down-chirps are the biologically relevant stimulus for big brown bats, up-chirps typically evoked larger peaks in the AER, but with some exceptions at the shortest chirp durations. The up-chirp duration that produc

How do tiger moths jam bat sonar?

The tiger moth Bertholdia trigona is the only animal in nature known to defend itself by jamming the sonar of its predators - bats. In this study we analyzed the three-dimensional flight paths and echolocation behavior of big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) attacking B. trigona in a flight room over seven consecutive nights to determine the acoustic mechanism of the sonar-jamming defense. Three mechanisms have been proposed: (1) the phantom echo hypothesis, which states that bats misinterpret moth clicks as echoes; (2) the ranging interference hypothesis, which states that moth clicks degrade th

Venous networks in the upper airways of bats: A histological and diceCT study.

Our knowledge of nasal cavity anatomy has grown considerably with the advent of micro-computed tomography (CT). More recently, a technique called diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced CT (diceCT) has rendered it possible to study nasal soft tissues. Using diceCT and histology, we aim to (a) explore the utility of these techniques for inferring the presence of venous sinuses that typify respiratory mucosa and (b) inquire whether distribution of vascular mucosa may relate to specialization for derived functions of the nasal cavity (i.e., nasal-emission of echolocation sounds) in bats. Situational and Age-Dependent Decision Making during Life Threatening Distress in Myotis macrodactylus.

Echolocation and audiovocal communication have been studied extensively in bats. The manner in which these abilities are incorporated within escape behaviors during life-threatening distress is largely unknown. Here we tested the hypothesis that behavioral response profiles expressed during distress are relatively stereotypic given their evolutionary adaptations to avoid predators. We subjected juvenile and adult big-footed myotis (Myotis macrodactylus) to a sequence of three types of life threatening distress: 1) trapping them in a mist-net (environmental threat), 2) approaching them when tra

High rates of vessel noise disrupt foraging in wild harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena).

Shipping is the dominant marine anthropogenic noise source in the world's oceans, yet we know little about vessel encounter rates, exposure levels and behavioural reactions for cetaceans in the wild, many of which rely on sound for foraging, communication and social interactions. Here, we used animal-borne acoustic tags to measure vessel noise exposure and foraging efforts in seven harbour porpoises in highly trafficked coastal waters. Tagged porpoises encountered vessel noise 17-89% of the time and occasional high-noise levels coincided with vigorous fluking, bottom diving, interrupted foragi

[The diagnostic and surgical characteristics of gunshot nonmagnetic intraocular fragments].

Results of treatment of 42 patients with a magnetic intraocular fragments (balls, pistons, capsules) are analyzed and indications for various surgical interventions for removal of fragments with the minimal injury for the eye are defined. The role of echo diagnosis (together with x-ray diagnosis and computer-aided tomography) in the selection of operative access to a foreign body and, specifically, echolocation on the operative table during surgery is shown. Combination of informative diagnostic methods with advanced surgical technologies helps save the organ and attain functional results in t

Hearing sensitivity evaluated by the auditory brainstem response in Miniopterus fuliginosus.

This study evaluated the hearing sensitivity of Miniopterus fuliginosus, a frequency-modulating (FM) bat species, by measuring the auditory brainstem responses in the inferior colliculus. The average audiogram was U-shaped. The mean threshold decreased gradually as the frequency increased from 16 to 40 kHz and then decreased rapidly as the frequency reached 46 kHz, with the peak sensitivity occurring at the terminal portion of the echolocation pulse between frequencies of 44 and 56 kHz. The shape of audiogram of M. fuliginosus is consistent with other FM bats, and is compared with its vocaliza

Fissures, folds, and scrolls: The ontogenetic basis for complexity of the nasal cavity in a fruit bat (Rousettus leschenaultii).

Mammalian nasal capsule development has been described in only a few cross-sectional age series, rendering it difficult to infer developmental mechanisms that influence adult morphology. Here we examined a sample of Leschenault's rousette fruit bats (Rousettus leschenaultii) ranging in age from embryonic to adult (n = 13). We examined serially sectioned coronal histological specimens and used micro-computed tomography scans to visualize morphology in two older specimens. We found that the development of the nasal capsule in Rousettus proceeds similarly to many previously described mammals, fol

The development of orofacial complex in bats: Implications for orofacial clefting.

Orofacial morphology in mammals plays a critical role in essential life functions such as feeding and communication, which are influenced by the shapes of these anatomical structures. Bats are known to exhibit highly diversified orofacial morphotypes within their clade, reflecting their varied diets and echolocation behaviors. The presence of bony discontinuities between the premaxilla and maxilla or among the premaxillae is a notable feature of bat orofacial morphology, observed in certain lineages. It is suggested that these unique orofacial morphotypes, not generally found in other mammals,

Long-term monitoring of Ziphius cavirostris behavior using 3D tracking from fixed hydrophone arrays off Southern California.

Goose-beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) are a deep-diving toothed whale species and top predators in deep sea ecosystems. Much is yet to be learned about their social and foraging strategies due to their elusive behavior, but this information is increasingly relevant given their demonstrated behavioral changes in association with anthropogenic sound. This study used direction-of-arrival (DOA) localization to track the position of goose-beaked whales from echolocation clicks recorded on seafloor-mounted hydrophone arrays offshore Southern California. Overall, 2738 tracks of diving goose-beake

Click detection rate variability of central North Pacific sperm whales from passive acoustic towed arrays.

Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is an optimal method for detecting and monitoring cetaceans as they frequently produce sound while underwater. Cue counting, counting acoustic cues of deep-diving cetaceans instead of animals, is an alternative method for density estimation, but requires an average cue production rate to convert cue density to animal density. Limited information about click rates exists for sperm whales in the central North Pacific Ocean. In the absence of acoustic tag data, we used towed hydrophone array data to calculate the first sperm whale click rates from this region and

The article discusses experience in the use of high-energy CO2 laser in the treatment of 108 patients with complicated forms of echinococcosis of the liver. The diagnostic efficacy of instrumental methods of examination is determined. The most informative are ultrasonic echolocation (96.8%) and computered tomography (100%). They allow exact localization of the cyst, which is important in the choice of the operative approach. The use of the laser for excising the fibrous capsule and treating the residual cavity makes is possible to: abandon the traditional methods for completing echinococcectom
