BACKGROUND: Tramadol is a widely used analgesic with a unique dual mechanism of action, combining weak μ-opioid receptor agonism with inhibition of norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake. It is frequently prescribed for various acute and chronic pain conditions. Evaluating prescribing trends can provide valuable insight into clinical practice patterns and inform institutional pain management strategies and policy development.
OBJECTIVE: To assess tramadol prescribing patterns over a one-year period in a university-based health system and compare them to overall opioid prescribing.

INTRODUCTION: Prescription errors remain a significant challenge to medication safety in hospital settings. Forced Interception (FI) systems, which automatically flag and block potentially problematic prescriptions, serve as critical safeguards against adverse drug events. However, the specific characteristics and underlying causes of intercepted prescriptions, particularly in Chinese hospital contexts, require further investigation to inform targeted quality improvement strategies. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics and interception reasons of FI prescriptions in a hospital setti

BACKGROUND: In the United States, an x-waiver credential is necessary to prescribe buprenorphine medication treatment for opioid use disorder (B-MOUD). Historically, this process has required certified training, which could be a barrier to obtaining an x-waiver and subsequently prescribing. To address this barrier, the US recently removed the training requirement for some clinicians. We sought to determine if clinicians who attended x-waiver training went on to obtain an x-waiver and prescribe B-MOUD, and to examine what facilitated or impeded B-MOUD prescribing.

Extended-release opioids are often prescribed to manage postoperative pain despite being difficult to titrate to analgesic requirements and their association with long-term opioid use. An Australian/New Zealand organisational position statement released in March 2018 recommended avoiding extended-release opioid prescribing for acute pain. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of this organisational position statement on extended-release opioid prescribing among surgical inpatients. Secondary objectives included predictors and clinical outcomes of prescribing extended-release opioids among su

PURPOSE: Pediatric primary care clinicians are often uncertain about patients' HIV infection risk and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) prescribing guidelines. This study was conducted to help identify ways to design and deliver useful electronic health record (EHR)-based alerts for PrEP to help mitigate this issue.
METHODS: Individual interviews and focus groups with pediatricians explored provider preferences for clinical decision support around PrEP in the EHR. Key themes were identified via the immersion-crystallization qualitative analytic technique.
RESULTS: Clinicians described ideal de

BACKGROUND: New Zealand went into lockdown March 2020 successfully eliminating the circulation of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) virus. During lockdown there were reduced rates of respiratory infections and hospital admission numbers were low. At the time, rumours of benefit and harm of medicines for COVID-19 were widespread in the lay and medical media.
AIM: To describe changes in inpatient prescribing in an acute general medicine service during the New Zealand COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.
METHODS: Rates of prescribing of medicines during the 33 days of lockdown were compared with a

In 2002, Ateniese and Medeiros proposed an e-prescription system, in which the patient can store e-prescription and related information using smart card. Latter, Yang et al. proposed a novel smart-card based e-prescription system based on Ateniese and Medeiros's system in 2004. Yang et al. considered the privacy issues of prescription data and adopted the concept of a group signature to provide patient's privacy protection. To make the e-prescription system more realistic, they further applied a proxy signature to allow a patient to delegate his signing capability to other people. This paper p

Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) was introduced in DSM-5 in 2013 to address concerns about overdiagnosis of pediatric bipolar disorder in chronically irritable children. We examined population-level trends in DMDD and bipolar disorder diagnoses and psychotropic medication use in youth. We conducted an interrupted time-series analysis using electronic health record data from the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network spanning 2003-2025. Annual incidence rates were estimated for DMDD diagnosis, bipolar disorder diagnosis, antipsychotic prescribing, and mood stabilizer prescribing amon

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prescribing patterns and identify potentially inappropriate prescribing practices among general practitioners in the private primary care sector by analysing a large electronic health insurance claims database.
METHODS: Medical claims records from February 2019 to February 2020 were extracted from a health insurance claims database. Data cleaning and data analysis were performed using Python 3.7 with the Pandas, NumPy and Matplotlib libraries. The top five most common diagnoses were identified, and for each diagnosis, the most common medication classes and medicat

BACKGROUND: The literature on results from primary care-based opioid-prescribing protocols is small and results have been mixed. To advance this field, we evaluated whether opioid prescribing changed after a comprehensive protocol was implemented and whether change was associated with the number and type of risk reduction tools adopted.
METHODS: Electronic medical record data were obtained for 2607 patients. Demographics, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 scores, body mass index, and utilization levels of protocol elements were measured for 24 months prior and 18 months post implementation of an

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) designed the Opioid Safety Initiative (OSI) to help decrease opioid prescribing practices associated with adverse outcomes. Key components included disseminating a dashboard tool that aggregates electronic medical record data to audit real-time opioid-related prescribing and identifying a clinical leader at each facility to implement the tool and promote safer prescribing. This study examines changes associated with OSI implementation in October 2013 among all adult VHA patients who filled outpatient opioid prescriptions. Interrupted time series analyse

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance is a major global public health challenge with particular implications in pediatrics. Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) require structured tools to assess prescribing quality, especially in complex clinical scenarios such as bloodstream infections and multidrug-resistant organism infections. The aim of this study was to design and implement a structured support program for managing these infections in a pediatric hospital, including an evaluation tool, a standard operating procedure, and its integration into the electronic health record.

Polypharmacy encompasses inappropriate prescribing, overprescribing, and underprescribing. Polypharmacy in older adults is quite common and contributes to adverse effects, drug interactions, hospital admissions, and functional and cognitive decline. Efforts to reduce polypharmacy include criterion-based management tools, deprescribing protocols, and the use of electronic clinical decision support tools.

BACKGROUND: Specific combinations of two drug classes are recommended in a variety of clinical situations in the management of hypertension. These preferred combinations are based on complimentary blood pressure (BP) lowering mechanisms or benefit for a concomitant disease.
METHODS: Using electronic health records (EHRs) data from 27,579 ambulatory hypertensive patients, we investigated antihypertensive therapy prescribing patterns and associations of preferred two drug classes with BP control.
RESULTS: Overall, BP control, defined as BP <140/90 mm Hg, was 65% among treated patients. Preferr
