Superiority and cost-effectiveness of Individual Placement and Support versus standard employment support for people with alcohol and drug dependence: a pragmatic, parallel-group, open-label, multicentre, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial.

BACKGROUND: Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is a specialist intervention to help people attain employment in the open competitive labour market. IPS has been developed in severe mental illness and other disabilities, but it is of unknown effectiveness for people with alcohol and drug dependence. The Individual Placement and Support-Alcohol and Drug (IPS-AD) is the first superiority trial to evaluate effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. METHODS: IPS-AD was a pragmatic, parallel-group, multi-centre, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial of standard employment support (treatment-as-usual

Academic burnout under geopolitical and economic uncertainty: longitudinal associations with future development anxiety, employment competition pressure, and perceived structural university support.

INTRODUCTION: Students may interpret geopolitical and economic change as a threat to future development, but its cross-wave associations with academic burnout remain unclear. METHODS: This study analyzed a two-wave convenience sample from four universities in Zhengzhou, China. The baseline sample comprised 1,823 students, of whom 1,215 completed matched follow-up after approximately 5 months. Wave-specific factor analyses, covariance-based confirmatory factor analysis, partial least squares structural equation modeling, and covariance-based sensitivity models were used. RESULTS: After baseli

Association between psychological capital and depressive symptoms during COVID-19: The mediating role of perceived social support and the moderating effect of employment pressure.

INTRODUCTION: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic affects individuals' mental health that can result in fear of getting COVID-19 infection and depression. Prior research has demonstrated that both psychological capital and perceived social support are related to the severity of depression. Yet no study explored the direction of associations between these factors. This undermines the validity of psychological capital as a basis for health interventions. METHODS: This study aimed to explore the association between psychological capital, perceived social support, employment pressure

Supporting a Student With School Absenteeism Through to Employment: A Case Report of Long-Term Home-Based Occupational Therapy for Emotion-Related School Attendance Challenges.

In Japan, rising school absenteeism underscores the need for effective support systems. Students with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, are highly vulnerable to prolonged absenteeism due to difficulties in interpersonal relationships and adaptation to their environment. However, existing literature primarily focuses on adaptation up to school reintegration or progression to higher education, with few studies examining the long-term transition from high school graduation to employment. This report describes the case of a

Protocol of a randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the PLACES intervention: a supported employment intervention aimed at enhancing work participation of unemployed and/or work-disabled cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Approximately onethird of cancer survivors encounter challenges reintegrating into the workforce, often experiencing involuntary unemployment and/or partial or full work disability following diagnosis and treatment. Returning to paid employment presents evident challenges due to uncertainties regarding work ability, perceived employer discrimination, and a lack of support, thereby risking social exclusion. However, interventions addressing return to paid employment among unemployed and/or work-disabled cancer survivors are scarce. Here, we describe the protocol of a randomized cont

"If you want to work, let's work out how to make this happen": An interpretive description study of occupational therapists' perspectives of supporting young adults experiencing psychosis with their employment.

INTRODUCTION: Young adults experiencing psychosis want to work but most of them do not, even though success in employment and careers is possible. Occupational therapists are ideally placed to support young adults experiencing psychosis with employment, but evidence on contemporary occupational therapy practice in this area is lacking. This study asked occupational therapists who work with young people experiencing psychosis to share their perspectives about employment support. METHOD: An interpretive description study design was used with data collected through a focus group of expert inform

Protocol for a mixed-methods longitudinal study to identify factors influencing return to work in the over 50s participating in the UK Work Programme: Supporting Older People into Employment (SOPIE).

INTRODUCTION: Increasing employment among older workers is a policy priority given the increase in life expectancy and the drop in labour force participation after the age of 50. Reasons for this drop are complex but include poor health, age discrimination, inadequate skills/qualifications and caring roles; however, limited evidence exists on how best to support this group back to work. The Work Programme is the UK Government's flagship policy to facilitate return to work (RTW) among those at risk of long-term unemployment. 'Supporting Older People Into Employment' (SOPIE) is a mixed-methods l

Supporting participation in paid work of cancer survivors and their partners in the Netherlands: protocol of the SusTained Employability in cancer Patients and their partnerS (STEPS) multi-centre randomized controlled trial and cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Many cancer survivors experience physical and/or psychosocial problems affecting return to work (RTW) and work retention. Current interventions on RTW lack evidence regarding effectiveness, while interventions for work retention are missing. Partners of cancer survivors may also experience work- and health-related outcomes; yet, these consequences are not well understood. Here, the protocol of the STEPS study is described. The study aims are to: 1) evaluate the (cost-)effectiveness of a rehabilitation program for RTW and work retention in cancer survivors, and 2) assess health- and

Cultural Competence Training Best Practices for Employment Support Professionals Serving People with Disabilities from Racial/Ethnic Minority Backgrounds with Co-occurring Opioid or Substance Use Disorders: A Scoping Review.

The purpose of this scoping review was to (a) identify culturally competent best practices that can be used to inform the training of employment support service providers (e.g., vocational rehabilitation, substance abuse, and mental health counselors) who serve people with disabilities (PWD) with co-occurring opioid or substance use disorders from minority racial and ethnic backgrounds, (b) identify gaps in the literature, and (c) present practice, research and policy recommendations. An in-depth search of five databases was conducted to identify eligible studies for this review. The analysis

Employment outcomes for people with severe disabilities: opportunities for improvement.

Supported employment began with a focus on those individuals deemed less likely to secure a job in the community: those with severe mental retardation, behavioral challenges, and multiple disabilities. The creation of supported employment resulted, in part, because of demonstrations of the competence and capabilities of these same people previously thought to be unemployable in any meaningful sense of the word. However, as supported employment has unfolded, those with the most severe disabilities appear to be underrepresented in the ranks of those benefitting from supported employment. Althoug

Interventions for obtaining and maintaining employment in adults with severe mental illness, a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: People with severe mental illness show high rates of unemployment and work disability, however, they often have a desire to participate in employment. People with severe mental illness used to be placed in sheltered employment or were enrolled in prevocational training to facilitate transition to a competitive job. Now, there are also interventions focusing on rapid search for a competitive job, with ongoing support to keep the job, known as supported employment. Recently, there has been a growing interest in combining supported employment with other prevocational or psychiatric in

Predicting Employment in the Mental Health Treatment Study: Do Client Factors Matter?

For people with psychiatric disabilities, demographic characteristics and measures of clinical status are often used to allocate scarce employment services. This study examined a battery of potential client predictors of competitive employment, testing the hypothesis that evidence-based supported employment would mitigate the negative effects of poor work history, uncontrolled symptoms, substance abuse, and other client factors. In a secondary analysis of 2055 unemployed Social Security Disability Insurance beneficiaries with schizophrenia or affective disorders, we examined 20 baseline client

Employment and educational outcomes in early intervention programmes for early psychosis: a systematic review.

AIMS: Young adults with early psychosis want to pursue normal roles - education and employment. This paper summarises the empirical literature on the effectiveness of early intervention programmes for employment and education outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of employment/education outcomes for early intervention programmes, distinguishing three programme types: (1) those providing supported employment, (2) those providing unspecified vocational services and (3) those without vocational services. We summarised findings for 28 studies. RESULTS: Eleven studies evaluated earl

Symptom Effects on Employment in a Structural Model of Mental Illness and Treatment: Analysis of Patients with Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: There is a long tradition in the health and mental health economics literatures of estimating the impacts of disorders on employment and earnings. Several analyses have associated mental illness with poorer labor market outcomes, often using indicators of disorders to measure mental illness, but it is unclear to what extent unobserved medical treatment biases the estimated impacts of disorders on labor market outcomes. In this study we argue that in order to judge the true employment costs of mental illness and the potential benefits of treatment it is necessary to account for the

Persisting Barriers to Employment for Recently Housed Adults with Mental Illness Who Were Homeless.

Adults with mental illness who are homeless experience multiple barriers to employment, contributing to difficulties securing and maintaining housing. Housing First programs provide quick, low-barrier access to housing and support services for this population, but their success in improving employment outcomes has been limited. Supported employment interventions may augment Housing First programs and address barriers to employment for homeless adults with mental illness. The present paper presents data from qualitative interviews to shed light on the persisting barriers to employment among peo

Outcomes of an individual placement and support programme incorporating principles of the collaborative recovery model.

INTRODUCTION: Engaging in employment enhances mental health recovery and is therefore of central focus for many occupational therapists working in mental health. Individual placement and support (IPS) is an evidence-based, supported employment model specifically designed for individuals with severe mental illness who have the desire to work. Despite strong support for IPS in Australia, implementation challenges have been encountered. This study evaluates outcomes achieved by participants engaged with WorkWell, an IPS programme delivered by a large Australian non-government organisation. In add

Is recovery possible outside the financial mainstream?

As psychiatric rehabilitation practitioners, we have solid evidence that our field's services are effective in helping people become employed, participate in social and civic life, avoid restrictive and coercive psychiatric treatment, and thrive in stable and secure community residences. Yet, hundreds of thousands of people with psychiatric disabilities do not do these things. So we must ask ourselves, to what extent is this due to their location outside the financial mainstream, and if it is, what we can do as a field to address poverty among those we serve? This editorial addresses this ques
