OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess urinary selenium concentration (USC) and its correlation with non-thyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS) and inflammatory markers in hospitalized adult patients with COVID-19.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted to investigate urinary selenium (Se) concentration in adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 between June and August 2020. Urine and serum samples were collected before complications occurred, always within the first 48 hours after onset. A total of 121 patients were stratified into three tertiles based on USC: (i) USC < 25 μg/L

We report a case of idiopathic hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis (IHCP) associated with an orbital pseudotumor and granulocytic thyroiditis of unknown origin. The patient suffered from progressive and finally complete loss of visual acuity, as well as from multiple cranial nerve dysfunctions. Medical treatment and radiation therapy were not beneficial. As reported in the literature, the CT and MRI findings of IHCP were non-specific; thus, diagnosis had to be made by exclusion and open biopsy was required. An inflammatory pseudotumor of the orbit is rarely found in patients with IHCP. Thyroi

BACKGROUND: Both the morbidity and mortality rates from congestive heart failure (CHF) remain elevated despite the medical and non-medical management of the disease, thus suggesting the existence of residual risk factors such as thyroid dysfunction. Particularly, the 15-30% of patients with CHF, especially those with severe ventricular dysfunction, display the so-called low T3 syndrome (LT3S), which seems to negatively affect the cardiovascular prognosis.
OBJECTIVE: Only a few clinical trials have been carried out to verify both the safety and the efficacy of thyroid replacement in the LT3S,

BACKGROUND: Euthyroid sick syndrome (ESS) frequently arises in children admitted with diabetic ketoacidosis/diabetic ketosis (DKA/DK). This study evaluates the interplay of various metabolic factors with occurrence of deranged thyroid function tests in children suffering from DKA/DK.
METHODS: 98 DKA and 96 DK pediatric patients were selected from hospital records. Those on thyroxine replacement, with overt hypothyroidism, or with positive anti-thyroperoxidase (TPO) antibody were excluded. Tests for liver function, renal function, lipid profile, serum osmolarity, thyroid function, c-peptide le

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICU-AW) is a common complication among critically ill patients. Existing evidence indicates that critically ill patients frequently develop low triiodothyronine syndrome (LT3S), and this thyroid hormone imbalance may disrupt muscle metabolic pathways and thereby promote the onset and progression of ICU-AW. However, the relationship between FT3 levels and ICU-AW remains inconclusive, and clinical research addressing this link remains limited. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the clinical relationship between FT3 levels and ICU-AW.

Nonthyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS) is widely found in the patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or critical illness. However, the exact pathogenesis and reasonable treatment remain unclear. To identify suitable studies for inclusion in present review, a search for articles using PubMed search engine with combined terms: (thyroid OR hypothyroidism OR hyperthyroidism OR triiodothyronine) AND (glomerulonephritis OR chronic kidney disease OR chronic renal failure OR end stage renal disease OR hemodialysis OR peritoneal dialysis OR kidney transplantation OR renal transplantation) was perform

OBJECTIVE: Thyroxine (T4) is routinely measured in dogs by some laboratories, and the result may be misleading as total thyroxine values (TT4) below the reference range are frequently observed. This may be due to either hypothyroidism or a non-thyroidal illness (Non-Thyroidal Illness Syndrome, NTIS). The aim of this study was to systematically investigate and compare TT4, free T4 (fT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and total triiodothyronine (TT3) concentrations, as well as thyroglobulin autoantibodies (TgAA) in dogs affected by NTIS as well as healthy and known hypothyroid dogs.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated relations between interleukins (IL) IL-6 and IL-10 and euthyroid sick syndrome (ESS) in patients with nonthyroidal illness (NTI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients and 20 healthy volunteers were recruited. The patients had either chronic kidney disease (CKD), congestive heart failure (CHF), or acute myocardial infarction (MI), distributed equally in 3 subgroups. Serum levels of IL-6 and IL-10, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), total T4, and T3 were determined.
RESULTS: In the 60 patients with NTI, we detected a significantly lower T3 and T4 levels compared to

BACKGROUND: Thyroid dysfunction after bone marrow transplantation (BMT) has been investigated in many studies, and most posttransplant thyroid disorders are now recognized as a late complication of transplantation. However, these studies mainly focused on late thyroid function after BMT, and we have little information on early changes of thyroid function after BMT.
METHODS: We prospectively investigated thyroid function in 57 patients receiving BMT. Serum thyroid-stimulating hormone, free triiodothyronine, and free thyroxine levels were determined at least monthly in the first 3 months, once

The literature on COVID-19-related thyroid complications has accumulated over the past year or so as the pandemic has accelerated throughout the world. In particular, several recent case reports have been published describing a possible correlation between COVID-19 disease and subacute thyroiditis (SAT). In this review, we briefly present one of our own patients and review the current published literature in this area up to January 2021, including analyses of major series of thyroid function tests in patients with significant COVID-19 infection. We conclude that while the great majority of pat

Severe illness can lead to multiple transient endocrinopathies. In adult patients, neuroendocrine alterations include sick euthyroid syndrome, an increase in corticosteroid levels, increase in prolactin levels, decreased insulin growth factor 1 levels and hypogonadism. We report the case of a 24-year-old man with meningococcal sepsis with multiple end-organ complications who developed persistent non-autoimmune hypothyroidism, adrenal insufficiency and primary hypogonadism all requiring hormone replacement. While adrenal insufficiency as part of the Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome is well desc

Low triiodothyronine (T3) syndrome, also known as non-thyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS), was one of the common endocrinopathies in critical illness. The potential impacts of low T3 syndrome on survival, endocrine function, and nutritional status of patients with aggressive mature B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) needed to be explored. We enrolled 225 patients. T3 levels were captured when starting chemotherapy, finishing chemotherapy, and at the first follow-up visit from 6 months after chemotherapy. Latest ultrasound results were recorded. Kaplan-Meier curves were used to compare overall sur

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by severe undernutrition associated with alterations in multiple endocrine axes, which are primarily adaptive to the state of caloric deprivation. Hormonal changes include growth hormone (GH) resistance with low insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels, hypothalamic hypogonadism, relative hypercortisolemia and changes in appetite regulating hormones, including leptin, ghrelin, and peptide YY. These alterations contribute to abnormalities in bone metabolism leading to low bone mass, impaired bone microarchitecture, and increased risk for fracture, and m

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in the developed world. In particular, TBI is an important cause of death and disability in young adults with consequences ranging from physical disabilities to long-term cognitive, behavioural, psychological and social defects.
AREAS COVERED: There is a large body of evidence that suggest that TBI conditions may adversely affect pituitary function in both the acute and chronic phases of recovery. Prevalence of hypopituitarism, from total to isolated pituitary deficiency, ranges from 5 to 90%. The time int

Hyperthyroidism is well known to be associated with cardiovascular manifestations. The authors have noted that patients of well controlled Graves' Disease often pose problems due to intrapoperative cardiovascular instability. Retrospective analysis of 137 case records of patients with Graves' disease (n = 35), toxic nodular goitre (n = 42) and those with euthyroid benign goitre (n = 60) were studied. In Graves' disease cardiovascular instability was found in the form of hypertension (n = 9) associated with tachyarrhythmia (n = 8) and bradycardia (n = 3). The incidence of first 2 of the above m

The euthyroid hyperthyroxinemia (EHT) is characterized on the one hand by a normal basal THS or TRH-TSH response but also by high plasma values of total thyroxine (TT4) on the other. However if only TT4 is assessed, "hyperthyroidism" may be diagnosed erroneously. EHT may be caused by an increase of specific thyroxine binding proteins which may be hereditary (permanent) or acquired (transient). The most frequent disturbance is due to an estrogen induced increase of thyroxine binding globulin (TBG) in the course of pregnancy, anticonceptive drugs or estrogen treatment. The albumin associated HT

Occult hyperthyroidism, a subclinical thyrotoxic state, is not readily identifiable clinically or through routine thyroid function tests. "Idiopathic" atrial fibrillation may be a manifestation of occult hyperthyroidism in the elderly. A normal response on a TRH stimulation test excludes this diagnosis. A blunted TSH response, coupled with elevation of free thyroid hormones and a high radioactive iodine uptake, will settle the diagnosis. Patients with occult hyperthyroidism frequently have toxic adenomas or nonpalpable nodular goiters, and treatment is best achieved with radioactive iodine abl

The thyroid hormone titres of the sera of 25 euthyroid infiltrative ophthalmopathic patients was examined, TRH test was performed, and thyroid-stimulating antibodies were studied by membrane receptor assay and TRAK assay. Previously, other diseases causing exophthalmos could be excluded by ophthalmological, radiological examinations, orbital ultrasonography and/or CT. Following TRH administration, 18 out of 25 patients showed abnormal TSH response, 16 of them were TSI - positive. Five of them became hyperthyroid 2-2.5 years later. After TRH administration 7 patients produced normal TSH respons
