Why existential threats increase conspiracy beliefs: Evidence for the mediating roles of agency detection and pattern perception.

This research investigates the cognitive mechanisms linking health-related existential threats to conspiracy beliefs within a Chinese context. Study 1 (N = 199) demonstrated that the relationship between perceived existential threats and outgroup conspiracy beliefs is mediated by hypersensitive agency detection through an experimental manipulation involving a monkeypox virus threat. Studies 2a (N = 198) and 2b (N = 200) revealed that illusory pattern perception also mediates this relationship. In Study 3 (N = 278, using a manipulation of threatening information about genetically modified foods

Addressing Patient Emotional and Existential Needs During Serious Illness: Results of the Outlook Randomized Controlled Trial.

CONTEXT: Few interventions exist to address patients' existential needs. OBJECTIVES: Determine whether an intervention to address seriously ill patients' existential concerns improves preparation, completion (elements of quality of life [QOL] at end of life), and reduces anxiety and depression. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial comparing outlook intervention, relaxation meditation (RM), and usual care (UC). Measures included primary-a validated measure of QOL at the end of life and secondary-Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General, anxiety (Profile of Mood States), depression (C

Dealing with existential anxiety in exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation: a phenomenological-hermeneutic study of patients' lived experiences.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate patients' lived experiences of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation. BACKGROUND: Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation is used to enable patients with cardiac problems to move forward to lead satisfying lives. However, knowledge of patients' concerns while they follow the current programmes is sparse. DESIGN: This study, which included nine men and two women with unstable angina pectoris and non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction, used a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. METHODS: The patients were followed by field observations during exercise-based

The role of religious and existential well-being in families with Lynch syndrome: prevention, family communication, and psychosocial adjustment.

This study explored the role of religious (RWB) and existential well-being (EWB) on psychosocial factors, support network characteristics, and screening practices in families with Lynch syndrome, also referred to as hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer (HNPCC). Participants were individuals with Lynch syndrome associated cancers and their first-degree relatives at risk of inheriting an identified deleterious mutation. Analyses considered both family RWB and EWB norms and individual deviations from that norm. Analyses controlled for age, gender, cancer diagnosis, number of respondents, and netw

Predictive testing and existential absurdity: resonances between experiences around genetic diagnosis and the philosophy of Albert Camus.

Predictive genetic testing may confront those affected with difficult life situations that they have not experienced before. These life situations may be interpreted as 'absurd'. In this paper we present a case study of a predictive test situation, showing the perspective of a woman going through the process of deciding for or against taking the test, and struggling with feelings of alienation. To interpret her experiences, we refer to the concept of absurdity, developed by the French Philosopher Albert Camus. Camus' writings on absurdity appear to resonate with patients' stories when they tal

Holistic medicine IV: principles of existential holistic group therapy and the holistic process of healing in a group setting.

In existential holistic group therapy, the whole person heals in accordance with the holistic process theory and the life mission theory. Existential group psychotherapy addresses the emotional aspect of the human mind related to death, freedom, isolation, and meaninglessness, while existential holistic group therapy addresses the state of the person"s wholeness. This includes the body, the person's philosophy of life, and often also love, purpose of life, and the spiritual dimension, to the same extent as it addresses the emotional psyche and sexuality, and it is thus much broader than tradit

Cognitive and existential-motivational pathways from empathy to prosocial behavior: a parallel mediation study in a Chinese university sample.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined a parallel mediation model in which empathy was hypothesized to be associated with prosocial behavior through two theoretically distinct pathways: a capability-oriented pathway via self-efficacy and an existential-motivational pathway via meaning in life, among Chinese university students. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1,549 university students (M age = 19.47 years, SD = 1.05, range 18-23; 71.7% female). Participants completed validated Chinese-language measures of empathy, self-efficacy, meaning in life, and prosocial behavior. Parallel m

Coping with existential anxiety: How resilience, intolerance of uncertainty, and cognitive-emotion regulation shape mental health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Existential anxiety (EA) is a transdiagnostic construct increasingly recognized for its role in the development of depression and anxiety. Despite its relevance, most research has focused only on a subset of EA and largely neglected the role of malleable moderating factors that could be addressed via psychotherapeutic practices, such as cognitive emotion regulation (CER) strategies, psychological resilience, and intolerance of uncertainty (IU), which are explored in the present study. METHODS: Slovenian young adults (N = 330; M = 21.20 years, SD = 1.85; 63.3% female) participated

Voices Unheard: A Reflective Lifeworld Research Study of Older Arabic-Speaking Female Migrants and Their Experience of Existential Loneliness.

INTRODUCTION: Existential loneliness (EL) is an unavoidable, deeper sense of loneliness. EL has been described as disconnection from life and the universe, experienced even in the presence of family and friends. Meaninglessness, loss of health and significant others seem to trigger older persons EL. Older Arabic-speaking women are a large migrant group in Sweden and there is a lack in knowledge about their experience of EL. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the phenomenon of EL as experienced by older Arabic-speaking female migrants. METHODS: This study was based on a phenomenological a

"Eh - What type of cells are these - flourishing in the liver?" Cancer patients' disclosure of existential concerns in routine hospital consultations.

OBJECTIVE: Advanced cancer poses a threat to all aspects of being, potentially causing existential suffering. We explore what kind of existential concerns patients with advanced cancer disclose during a routine hospital consultation, and how they communicate such concerns. METHODS: We analyzed thirteen video-recorded hospital consultations involving adult patients with advanced cancer. The study has a qualitative and exploratory design, using procedures from microanalysis of face-to-face-dialogue. RESULTS: Nearly all patients disclosed how the illness experience included losses and threats o

From neurotic guilt to existential guilt as grief: the road to interiority, agency, and compassion through mourning. Part I.

This study proposes through a case illustration that psychoanalytic patients who can process both aggression and loss through a mourning process are able to free themselves from pathological self attack when the object relations work of attachment, psychic holding, and separation transpires. In the case of Helen discussed here, transformation through a "developmental mourning process" results in the evolution of powerful psychological capacities for interiority, self agency, and interpersonal compassion. This developmental mourning process is endowed with the assimilation and psychic fantasy s

Existential homecoming when facing death: A meta-ethnography of the end-of-life experiences of patients with a life-threatening illness.

BACKGROUND: Serious illness influences existential well-being. Dwelling is an existential dimension of well-being when coming to terms with one's situation, yet there is limited knowledge about how this may be achieved and fostered in clinical practice. AIM: To interpret and synthesise qualitative research findings about patients' experiences facing death at the end of life. DESIGN: A meta-ethnography based on Noblit and Hare's seven-phase process was conducted. DATA SOURCES: CINAHL, Ovid Medline, APA PsycInfo, and Embase, were searched. Qualitative interview studies published between 2014

Fear of cancer recurrence in haematological cancer patients: exploring socio-demographic, psychological, existential and disease-related factors.

PURPOSE: This study aims to explore the relation between the dimension of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) in haematological cancer patients relapse-free for at least 2 years and socio-demographic, related to the disease, psychological and existential factors. METHODS: A sample of 75 haematological cancer patients agreed to participate in the study through a self-reported online questionnaire (51.9% males). A total of 70.1% had a low recurrence risk. The questionnaire included socio-demographic (gender, age, civil status, level of education and number of children), related to the disease (diag

Ethynylation of Formaldehyde over CuO/SiO2 Catalysts Modified by Mg Species: Effects of the Existential States of Mg Species.

The highly effective catalytic synthesis of 1,4-butynediol (BD) from the Reppe process is a fascinating technology in modern chemical industry. In this work, we reported the effects of the existential states of Mg species in the CuO/silica-magnesia catalysts for the ethynylation of formaldehyde in a simulative slurry reactor. The physichemical properties of the supports and the corresponding catalysts were extensively characterized by various techniques. The experimental results indicated that the introduced Mg species in the form of MgO particles, MgO microcrystals, or Si-O-Mg structures effe

Childhood Sexual Abuse and Suicidal Ideation Among Bipolar Patients: Existential But Not Religious Well-Being as a Protective Factor.

Individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD) are at an increased risk of Suicidal ideation, attempts, and death. Moreover, a strong association exists between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and suicidal ideation among individuals with BD. Yet growing evidence suggests that existential well-being (EWB) may be a protective factor against suicidality. In this study, adult BD patients (N = 112) provided data on CSA, religious well-being (RWB; spiritual life in relation to God), EWB (purpose/meaning in life), and suicidal ideation. Participants were between 19 and 65 years of age. The majority wa

Blame and guilt - a mixed methods study of obstetricians' and midwives' experiences and existential considerations after involvement in traumatic childbirth.

INTRODUCTION: When complications arise in the delivery room, midwives and obstetricians operate at the interface of life and death, and in rare cases the infant or the mother suffers severe and possibly fatal injuries related to the birth. This descriptive study investigated the numbers and proportions of obstetricians and midwives involved in such traumatic childbirth and explored their experiences with guilt, blame, shame and existential concerns. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A mixed methods study comprising a national survey of Danish obstetricians and midwives and a qualitative interview study w

Lived-through past, experienced present, anticipated future: Understanding "existential loss" in the context of life-limiting illness.

OBJECTIVE: Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a rare, devastating neurodegenerative disease of middle/later life, usually presenting in the sixth and seventh decades (McDermot & Shaw, 2008). People have to wait many months to receive a diagnosis of MND (Donaghy et al., 2008), and during this period they have already experienced the degenerative nature that characterizes MND (Bolmsjö, 2001). However, information on the meaning of life with MND through time is limited. The aim of the present research was to answer the research question "What does it mean to be a person living through the illness tra
