Nonsyndromic facial asymmetry with unilateral condylar aplasia.

Introduction. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the most complex elegantly designed joint in the human body. Abnormal development and growth of TMJ may lead to condyle aplasia present in several syndromes expressions, but it is extremely rare when not connected to any underlying pathological disorder or in conjunction with any syndrome. Objective. A rare case of aplasia of the mandibular condyle is presented, along with 3D computed tomography (3D CT) findings. Conclusion. Based on clinical and radiological findings we suggest the abnormal development of the TMJ as the origin. The 3D CT has

[Facial asymmetry and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome].

When unilateral mandibular growth disturbances appear early in childhood, they usually lead to maxillomandibular deformities. Facial asymmetry, mandibular retrusion, and malocclusion are signs also found in hemifacial microsomia. Some of these patients develop an obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, which can be resolved by surgical-orthognathic treatment. Pre and post-operative polysomnograms with recording of oxygen saturation are objective measures of good surgical results. Two patients with facial asymmetry and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome are presented. Special emphasis is made on treatm

Hanhart's syndrome with facial asymmetry: case report.

An unusual variant of Hanhart's syndrome associated with facial asymmetry in a female patient is presented together with surgical treatment of her facial anomalies. Following reconstruction which included bimaxillary osteotomies and osteopericranial and pericranial flaps, a good aesthetic result was achieved which enabled the psychological and social rehabilitation of the patient.

[Facial asymmetry due to hemi-mandibular hypertrophy].

A relatively frequent disorder, hemi-mandibular hypertrophy is today well identified clinically and radiologically. Its expression varies from one case to another but it becomes stabilized at the end of growth. Its etiology is unclear and it can only be corrected surgically: the habitual inclination of the plane of occlusion leads to a bimaxillary action with a tridimensional effect. The results of these osteotomies performed at the same time is stable and dramatic. Although isolated osteotomy of the basilar excess has become a last resort procedure, isolated condylectomy is still an acceptabl

The degenerative, regenerative mandibular condyle: facial asymmetry.

Studies of longitudinal cephalometric radiographs are presented for several patients with condylar fracture or hemifacial microsomia to illustrate condylar regeneration, presumably under functional influences. Implications of new condylar development and growth to facial and mandibular symmetry are presented. Clinical implications are introduced and the hypothesis of necessity of function for maintenance of relative facial symmetry is considered.

Deciphering Multi-Axis Facial Rotation: The Key to Understanding Facial Asymmetry.

Facial asymmetry, manifesting as visible differences between the two sides of the face, is common. These disparities can be structural (inherent in the individual's facial bone structure or soft tissues), or functional (the result of variations in muscle tone or nerve function, and apparent only during expressions like smiling or frowning). To achieve optimal aesthetic and functional outcomes in aesthetics, orthodontics, and facial reconstructive surgery, practitioners must understand and address these asymmetries. Traditionally, members of the cosmetic surgery specialty have valued symmetry,

Correlation between maxillary defect and facial asymmetry.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between maxillary defects and facial asymmetry, and to establish categories for visual perception of facial asymmetry. The facial data of 47 patients who underwent maxillary resection due to tumors were captured using stereophotogrammetry. Facial asymmetry was measured using a landmark-independent method and assessed with a Likert scale. Facial asymmetry was classified into three grades (I-III) based on visual perception. Statistically significant differences (P < 0.001) were found in the asymmetry of the suborbital, zygomatic, buccal, and

Facial asymmetry quantitative evaluation in oculoauriculovertebral spectrum.

OBJECTIVES: Facial asymmetries in oculoauriculovertebral spectrum (OAVS) patients might require surgical corrections that are mostly based on qualitative approach and surgeon's experience. The present study aimed to develop a quantitative 3D CT imaging-based procedure suitable for maxillo-facial surgery planning in OAVS patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen OAVS patients (mean age 3.5 ± 4.0 years; range 0.2-14.2, 6 females) and 13 controls (mean age 7.1 ± 5.3 years; range 0.6-15.7, 5 females) who underwent head CT examination were retrospectively enrolled. Facial asymmetry index in normal young adults.

OBJECTIVES: To differentiate a symmetric face from an asymmetric face by analyzing a three-dimensional (3D) facial image and plotting the asymmetry index (AI) on a facial symmetry diagram. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: Sixty healthy Chinese adults (30 men and 30 women, mean age: 27.7 + 4.9 years old) without any craniofacial deformity were recruited on a voluntary basis from a medical center. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 3D facial image of each participant was captured by a GENEX 3D FACE CAM system. Sixteen facial landmarks, as defined by Farkas, were selected on each 3D facial image. The AI was

Acrogigantism and facial asymmetry: McCune-Albright syndrome.

McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is characterized by a triad of poly/monoostotic fibrous dysplasia, café-au-lait macules and hyperfunctioning endocrinopathies. Association of MAS with GH excess is rare, and in most of the instances somatotropinoma has not been documented. Treatment of patients of MAS with acromegaly is difficult because of thickened calvarium and dysplastic skull bone. We report a 17-year-old girl, who presented with cranio-facial fibrous dysplasia, café-au-lait macules and also had acromegaly due to pituitary macroadenoma, and treated with gamma knife radiosurgery.

Lateralized asymmetry of facial motor evoked potentials.

BACKGROUND: There is considerable evidence that emotions are expressed more intensely on the left side of the face. This asymmetry could reflect a right hemisphere advantage in processing emotional material or an asymmetry in corticobulbar motor systems. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to test for lateralized asymmetry in the cortical control of muscles of facial expression in the lower face. METHODS: We administered TMS to the motor cortex of 50 subjects during contraction of bilateral orbicularis oris muscles. We analyzed motor evoked potentials (MEPs) with a repeated measu

Facial asymmetry in superior oblique muscle palsy.

Facial asymmetry is an underrecognized association or sequela of torticollis in congenital or very early onset superior oblique muscle palsy, which when present in an adult, helps to confirm chronicity and prevent unnecessary neurologic evaluation. Nineteen cases of superior oblique muscle palsy were studied prospectively. Of 12 unilateral palsies presenting in adulthood, 9 were considered congenital by history and 7 (77%) of these had facial asymmetry. Large vertical fusional vergence amplitudes and torticollis, on review of childhood photographs, confirmed the early onset of the palsy in eac

Congenital Facial Infiltrating Lipomatosis: A Rare Cause of Facial Asymmetry in Infants.

Congenital facial infiltrating lipomatosis (CFIL) is a rare condition that typically affects the trunk and limbs, but can also occur in the face. Managing CFIL is a significant challenge due to its diffuse involvement in important facial structures. This case report aims to describe a rare form of lipomatosis and discuss the clinical and therapeutic aspects of this entity. The patient was a 5-year-old girl who was admitted to our department due to a right paralateronasal swelling that had been present for 5 months. During the physical examination, a swelling of the right nasolabial was observe

Contralateral botulinum toxin injection to improve facial asymmetry after acute facial paralysis.

HYPOTHESIS: The application of botulinum toxin to the healthy side of the face in patients with long-standing facial paralysis has been shown to be a minimally invasive technique that improves facial symmetry at rest and during facial motion, but our experience using botulinum toxin therapy for facial sequelae prompted the idea that botulinum toxin might be useful in acute cases of facial paralysis, leading to improve facial asymmetry. BACKGROUND: In cases in which medical or surgical treatment options are limited because of existing medical problems or advanced age, most patients with acute
