OBJECTIVES: Surgical rehabilitation of facial palsy is challenging as each case is unique and success rate is often unpredictable. In one technique, temporalis is elevated from origin preserving vessels, and this elevation increases the length which is tunneled into buccal tissues (pull-through technique, Group A). In the other technique, a harvested fascia lata is attached to temporalis after a coronoidectomy release and the fascia lata is attached to the modiolus (Group B). The aim of this study is to compare the two different surgical techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Case records of 22 c

BACKGROUND: The puborectalis muscle is an important muscle for the maintenance of fecal continence. We present a novel surgical technique for repair of symptomatic avulsed puborectalis muscle.
CASE: This woman presented with dyspareunia and fecal incontinence since the vaginal birth of her child 2 years before. The diagnosis of an avulsed right puborectalis was made by physical examination and confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging and three-dimensional ultrasonography. Fascia lata was harvested from the patient's thigh and used to reconstitute the missing portion of the puborectalis muscle.

The aim of this paper is to report vaginal erosion of cadaveric fascia lata used for abdominal sacrocolpopexy and suburethral sling urethropexy. The charts of patients who underwent abdominal sacrocolpopexy or suburethral sling urethropexy between March 1994 and February 1999 were reviewed for perioperative data. In 47 cases of abdominal sacrocolpopexy or suburethral sling, 32 utilized cadaveric fascia lata, with 11 for sacrocolpopexy and 22 for suburethral sling. Vaginal erosion of cadaveric fascia lata graft was noted in 5 (23%) following sling procedure and 3 (27%) following sacrocolpopexy,

The results of an analysis of the surgery ("Repair of Ptosis using Frontalis Muscle and Fascia Lata") carried out on 316 lids is presented. The main indication for this operation is a large congenital ptosis with minimal levator function. Conclusions from the study indicate that autogenous fascia is an ideal tissue for lid suspension, and is better than stored fascia. Stored fascia does present some problems but is useful in small children or when the patient does not want a scar on the leg. Bilateral repair for unilateral ptosis is recommended for symmetrical results. The best ages for surger

OBJECTIVES: While standard treatments for mandibular osteoradionecrosis (MORN) exist for mild/superficial and severe/full thickness disease, there is no consensus on treatment for advanced, partial thickness disease. In this niche, the anterolateral thigh fascia lata (ALTFL) "rescue" flap has managed MORN successfully. This study aimed to compare ALTFL with fibula free flap (FFF) reconstruction to determine differences in outcomes, complications, and postoperative logistics.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients undergoing ALTFL or FFF for MORN between 2008 and 2024 was carried ou

A pseudotumor of the tensor fascia lata (TFL) describes a rare condition characterized by hypertrophy or pseudohypertrophy of the TFL that can mimic a soft tissue mass. Without the right clinical suspicion, it can be misdiagnosed as a benign or malignant soft tissue tumor, leading to oncologic workups. Unnecessary workups can cause patient distress, waste resources, and delay the management of the condition and its associated symptoms. Here, we describe a 65-year-old male who developed a pseudotumor of the TFL in the setting of severe lumbar spinal stenosis. The etiology for this patient was s

Lower lip malposition can occur after anterior mandibular resection as a result of the loss of soft tissue lip attachments. We report our technique of cranial suspension of the lower lip with fascia lata slings to improve lip position. Correction of lip ptosis results in cessation of drooling, improved oral intake, and restoration of facial aesthetics. Laryngoscope, 135:1702-1705, 2025.

Large bone defect regeneration remains a major challenge for orthopedic surgeons. Tissue engineering approaches are therefore emerging in order to overcome this limitation. However, these processes can alter some of essential native tissue properties such as intermolecular crosslinks of collagen triple helices, which are known for their essential role in tissue structure and function. We assessed the persistence of extracellular matrix (ECM) properties in human fascia lata (HFL) and periosteum (HP) after tissue engineering processes such as decellularization and sterilization. INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Burn still the major cause of disabilities and challenge facing both patient and surgeon, and when hands were affected a comprehensive planning and work must be obtained to restore functional and aesthetic aspects of hand. Tensor fascia lata (TFL) considered since centuries a useful tool to save hand post burn either it was been harvested with pedicle or as free flap. Although pedicle TFL became seldom but it may be the best option for hand reconstruction. In this article we report a case of hand burn that was managed by pedicle TFL.

BACKGROUND: Nasal septum perforation (NSP) is an anatomical defect of the mucosa, cartilage/bone of nasal septum and septoplasty is the most common cause of it. A perforated septum rarely heals on its own, it is more likely to get worse. The success for large perforations is approximately 78%, it is harder to be successful in vertically larger perforations. We introduce a new technique to close large perforations by the fascia lata and costal cartilage sandwich graft (FLSG). The main advantage of this technique is that the fascia lata eliminates the opening between the septal mucosal flaps in

Enlargement of tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) is seen in 1-29% of laryngectomee/laryngopharyngectomee using tracheoesophageal voice. It predisposes patient for recurrent aspiration pneumonia. Surgical closure of TEP is required in 30-67% of patients not responding to conservative measures. Surgical closure of an enlarged TEP using a flap may be time consuming, complex, and logistically challenging to organize. A novel technique of Fascia lata graft closure of an enlarged TEP is presented here. This technique can be useful in carefully selected patients with an enlarged TEP.

Objectives Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage is an undesirable complication of transsphenoidal skull base surgery. The issue of the most appropriate sellar dura repair remains unresolved, although a multilayer technique using autologous fascia lata is widely used. We describe the novel application of a homologous banked fascia lata graft as an alternative to an autologous one in the reconstruction of sellar dura defects in endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery. Design The clinical records of patients who underwent endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery at our department from June 2012, when we starte

BACKGROUND: Tensor fascia lata pedicled flap is one of the most useful flaps for reconstruction pressure sore defects on trochanteric region. Debate exists on the safe dimension of the flap, as distal tip necrosis can be encountered. The aim of the current study is to report experience of Clinic for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Clinical University Center of Sarajevo, with tensor fascia lata pedicled flap in reconstructing trochanteric pressure sore defects.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 1993 to December 2007, 39 pedicled TFL flaps were used for reconstruction trochanteric pressure

PURPOSE: The pubovaginal sling procedure using autologous fascia has become the gold standard for treating intrinsic sphincter deficiency and stress urinary incontinence in women. A recent modification has been the use of cadaveric fascia as the sling material. We recently reported similar results for cadaveric fascia lata in 121 women and autologous fascia lata in 46 at a mean followup of 12 months. We have now identified 8 patients who experienced intermediate term failure at 4 to 13 months using cadaveric fascia lata.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 8 of 1

The tensor fascia lata pedicled flap was successfully used to salvage 3 severely injured upper extremities in 2 patients. Both patients had undergone 3 prior free tissue transfers without complete closure of their wounds. All 3 tensor fascia lata flaps (2 myocutaneous, 1 myofascial) survived entirely. We believe this flap offers a distinct advantage compared with the groin flap when pedicled flap coverage of the upper extremity is required.

The fascia lata sling procedure has been used over the past 22 years in our unit for treating recurrent urinary stress incontinence when irreparably poor local support tissues were suspected. Sixty-nine patients had undergone one previous operation to correct urinary stress incontinence. One hundred one patients had two or more previous operations. The cure rate for the condition of genuine stress incontinence has been 100% in the last 148 cases and 98.2% overall. However, the cure rate for the symptom of urinary stress incontinence was 92.4%. There were only three sling failures in the entire
