Sex-Specific changes in stress circuitry of the nucleus tractus solitarius following food deprivation in two rat strains.

Food deprivation is used in many experimental models and is becoming increasingly prevalent in human diets. The impact of food deprivation on specific brain regions, including the nucleus of the tractus solitarius (NTS), a region that is involved in hunger and satiety sensing, remains to be determined. The NTS is a heterogeneous nucleus that includes corticotropin releasing factor receptor 1 (CRF1) neurons. CRF1 is implicated in both stress and appetite regulation, but the effects of food deprivation on CRF1 NTS neurons are unclear. We used immunofluorescence to examine the effects of 24-hour

Effects of rearing density, age, sex, and food deprivation on flight initiation of the red flour beetle (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae).

Effects of rearing density, adult density and sex ratio in the flight chamber, adult age, sex, presence or absence of food, and duration of food deprivation on rate of and time to flight initiation of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), were studied in the laboratory. Rates of flight initiation were slightly lower at lower rearing densities, but they did not differ with age or sex of adults, presence or absence of food in the flight chamber, or duration of food deprivation. Focal adults were less likely to fly when individuals of the opposite sex wer

General, mu and kappa opioid antagonists in the nucleus accumbens alter food intake under deprivation, glucoprivic and palatable conditions.

Ventricular microinjection studies found that whereas mu (beta-funaltrexamine, B-FNA), mu1 (naloxonazine) and kappa (nor-binaltorphamine, Nor-BNI) opioid receptor antagonists, but not delta antagonists, reduce deprivation-induced intake, kappa and mu, but not mu1 or delta antagonists reduce both 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG) hyperphagia and sucrose intake. Since opioid agonists stimulate spontaneous food intake in the accumbens, the present study examined whether administration of either naltrexone, B-FNA or Nor-BNI in the accumbens altered intake under deprivation (24 h), glucoprivic (2DG: 500 mg/k

The Role of the Posterior Paraventricular Nucleus of the Thalamus in Food Deprivation-Induced Heroin-Seeking Relapse, in Male and Female Rats.

Abstinence from drug use is often the result of the associated negative consequences. However, relapse occurs in a large proportion of abstinent users, and the underlying brain mechanisms are not clear. An arguably relevant brain area is the posterior paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (pPVT), which plays a role in motivational processes and addiction-like behaviours. Using a punishment-imposed abstinence procedure, we assessed the effect of chemogenetic inhibition and excitation of the pPVT on food deprivation-induced relapse to heroin-seeking in male and female rats. Rats were trained t

Diet quality and the influence of social and physical factors on food consumption and nutrient intake in materially deprived older people.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of social and physical factors on diet quality in materially deprived (low income) older people in the United Kingdom. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A diet quality index was obtained for 222 men and 440 women aged 65 and over living alone or with other adults of retirement age from the United Kingdom Low Income Diet and Nutrition Survey (2003-2005). The association between diet quality and social and physical factors was investigated by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Analysis revealed several barriers to an adequate diet in the older low-income

A role for neuropeptide Y Y5 but not the Y1-receptor subtype in food deprivation-induced reinstatement of heroin seeking in the rat.

RATIONAL AND OBJECTIVES: Neuropeptide Y (NPY), an orexigenic peptide that is released during periods of food restriction, has been shown to have a significant modulatory impact on drug-related behaviors. We have previously reported that both acute food deprivation (FD) and NPY injections can reinstate extinguished drug-seeking behavior, a proposed animal model of relapse to drug abuse. However, it is not clear whether the FD effect on drug seeking is dependent on NPY transmission. Here, we used the reinstatement model to assess the role of NPY Y1 and Y5-receptor-mediated transmission in FD-ind

Altered control of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis in adult male rats exposed perinatally to food deprivation and/or dehydration.

Dehydration, a classic homeostatic stressor in rats, leads to a series of well characterized endocrine responses including stimulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In this study, the hypothesis to be tested was that a 50% maternal food restriction (FR50) in late gestation and lactation may have long-term repercussions on HPA axis responsiveness to dehydration in offspring. For this purpose, we studied HPA axis activity in 4-month-old control (C) and perinatally malnourished male rats after a 72-hour water deprivation period. Furthermore, we investigated the long-lasting eff

Effect of losartan on sodium appetite of hypothyroid rats subjected to water and sodium depletion and water, sodium and food deprivation.

The involvement of angiotensin AT1 receptors in sodium appetite was studied in hypothyroid rats treated with the angiotensin II antagonist losartan. Losartan was administered chronically by the oral route or acutely by the subcutaneous route after water and sodium depletion or water, sodium and food deprivation. Three days after addition of losartan to the food at the dose of 1.0 mg x g(-1), the rats significantly reduced (P < 0.02) their spontaneous intake of 1.8% NaCl. Increasing the dose of losartan to 2.0 and 4.0 mg x g(-1) did not reduce NaCl intake; in contrast, the intensity of the sodi

A single brain stem substrate mediates the motivational effects of both opiates and food in nondeprived rats but not in deprived rats.

Drug-naive and morphine-dependent rats both preferred places paired with morphine over unfamiliar neutral places. Morphine-dependent, but not naive, rats avoided places paired with the lack of morphine (i.e., withdrawal). Food-sated and food-deprived rats both preferred places paired with food over unfamiliar neutral places. Food-deprived, but not sated, rats avoided places paired with the lack of food (i.e., hunger). Lesions of the tegmental pedunculopontine nucleus (TPP) blocked the morphine- and food-conditioned place preferences in drug-naive and food-sated rats, respectively. TPP lesions

A role for kappa-, but not mu-opioid, receptor activation in acute food deprivation-induced reinstatement of heroin seeking in rats.

Stress is considered to be one of the major triggers to drug relapse, even after prolonged periods of abstinence. In rats, the activation of stress-related brain systems, including corticotropin-releasing factor and norepinephrine, is critical for stress-induced reinstatement of extinguished drug seeking, an animal model for drug relapse. In addition, there are strong indications that activation of the endogenous opioid system is important for the effects of stress on drug seeking. More specifically, activation of the dynorphin/kappa opioid receptor (KOR) system is critically involved in the r

Feeding behaviour after injection of α-adrenergic receptor agonists into the median raphe nucleus of food-deprived rats.

This study investigated the participation of median raphe nucleus (MnR) α1-adrenergic receptors in the control of feeding behaviour. The α1-adrenergic agonist phenylephrine (PHE) and α2-adrenergic agonist clonidine (CLON) (at equimolar doses of 0, 6 and 20 nmol) were injected into the MnR of: a) rats submitted to overnight fasting (18 h); or b) rats maintained with 15 g of lab chow/day for 7 days. Immediately after the drug injections, the animals were placed in the feeding chamber and feeding and non-ingestive behaviours such as grooming, rearing, resting, sniffing and locomotion were recorde

Effects of food deprivation on expression of growth hormone receptor and proximate composition in liver of black seabream Acanthopagrus schlegeli.

The effects of food deprivation on the hepatic level growth hormone receptor (GHR) were investigated in black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegeli) both at the protein level (by radioreceptor assay) and at the mRNA level (by ribonuclease protection assay). Serum levels of growth hormone (GH) and triiodothyronine (T(3)) were also measured. Condition factor and hepatic proximate composition of the fish were also assessed. Significant decrease in hepatic GHR binding was recorded as early as on day 2 of starvation. On day 30 this decrease was even more pronounced, with the level in the starved fish r

Postnatal undernutrition in rats: attempts to develop alternative methods to food deprive pups without maternal behavioral alteration.

Two methods were investigated as attempts to undernourish rat pups without the disturbances in maternal behavior that accompany the procedures used to date for this purpose. In the 1st method, a litter of 12 pups was raised by both a lactating mother and a "sensitized" female. The sensitized female was provided under the assumption that she could correct for the deficit in maternal care when 1 mother raises a large litter. The results showed that the pups raised by the 2 females were constantly removed by the females from each other's nests; the females engaged in constant fighting and showed

Fatty acid composition and development of hepatic lipidosis during food deprivation--mustelids as a potential animal model for liver steatosis.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome characterized by asymptomatic hepatic steatosis. It is present in most cases of human obesity but also caused e.g., by rapid weight loss. The patients have decreased n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) proportions with decreased percentages of 18:3(n-3), 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3) and an increased n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio in liver and/or white adipose tissue (WAT). The present study examined a new experimental model to study liver steatosis with possible future applications to NAFLD. Ten European polecats

Mediating pathways between area-level deprivation and hypertension in Nepal: the role of nutritional status, food insecurity, and health behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a major contributor to global disease burden, and the prevalence is associated to various social determinants, including area-level deprivation. However, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study explores how household food insecurity, individual behaviors (smoking and alcohol use), and nutritional status may mediate the relationship between area-level deprivation and hypertension in Nepal. METHODS: We used nationally representative data from the 2016 Nepal Demographic and Health S

The 24/7 lifestyle and male hormonal health: how sleep deprivation and ultra-processed foods impact testosterone and reproduction.

UNLABELLED: Sleep is a fundamental physiological state essential for the regulation of multiple biological systems, including hormonal homeostasis. However, in modern society, both the duration and quality of sleep have been progressively declining. Emerging evidence suggests that sleep deprivation (SD) leads to reduced testosterone levels, which may negatively affect male reproductive health. Concurrently, the excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) represents another major global health concern. Beyond increasing the risk of cardiometabolic disorders, UPF intake has been linked

Social dominance rank and accessory sex glands in wild adult male house mice born to food-deprived mothers.

Food deprivation after weaning often has greater effects on the reproduction of females than males. However, if animals are deprived prenatally (i.e., through deprivation of the mother during gestation), the reproduction of males may be more negatively impacted because it may decrease their ability to compete with other males and their attractiveness to females. We tested the predictions that adult sons of females that are food-deprived during gestation would tend to lose agonistic encounters with sons of well-nourished (control) females and would have smaller accessory sex glands as well. Son
