Forest loss shapes the landscape suitability of Kyasanur Forest disease in the biodiversity hotspots of the Western Ghats, India.

BACKGROUND: Anthropogenic pressure in biodiversity hotspots is increasingly recognized as a major driver of the spillover and expansion of zoonotic disease. In the Western Ghats region of India, a devastating tick-borne zoonosis, Kyasanur Forest disease (KFD), has been expanding rapidly beyond its endemic range in recent decades. It has been suggested that anthropogenic pressure in the form of land use changes that lead to the loss of native forest may be directly contributing to the expanding range of KFD, but clear evidence has not yet established the association between forest loss and KFD

Fourfold increase in fragmentation from road expansion in Siberian intact forests since 2000.

Road development is a major driver of forest degradation worldwide, accelerating habitat fragmentation, biodiversity loss and carbon emissions. Although these consequences have been documented in tropical forests, the spatiotemporal dynamics and ecological impacts of road expansion in boreal intact forest landscapes (IFLs) remain poorly understood, particularly for the central-eastern Siberian IFLs, an ~1.71 million km2 wilderness and carbon sink. To address this gap, we analysed 20,480 Landsat satellite images from 2000 to 2023, and found a 1.6-fold increase in road area and length across thi

War fires promote short-term alien plant colonization in eastern Ukraine's pine forests.

Russian full-scale military invasion has driven multiple ecosystem disturbances in the arid zone of eastern Ukraine, including fires of varying severity. Local forests, largely dominated by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), were planted as uniform monocultures in a region where low-density woodlands had historically prevailed. However, little is known about how military-related fires affect successional trajectories in disturbed pine forests. We conducted fully digital surveys of vascular plant composition using under-canopy imagery collected by an unmanned aerial vehicle. Transects were estab

How Mixed Are Production-Oriented Planted Forests? A Global Review and Classification Approach.

Mixed planted forests (MPF) are increasingly recognized for their potential to reconcile forest productivity with biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services, such as climate adaptation and mitigation. They can be mixed in multiple ways, but the lack of a standardized procedure to compare mixture levels has hindered the exploration of their potential benefits, rendering the term "mixed" too generic to support meaningful comparisons across studies or informed decision-making. This study aims to (i) conduct a global literature review of the characteristics of MPF established for production

Protecting tropical forests is more cost-effective for biodiversity and climate than restoration.

Halting deforestation and promoting restoration are at the core of strategies to confront the biodiversity and climate crises in tropical forests. Avoiding forest disturbances is also critically important but has received far less attention, and there is a lack of clarity about the relative cost-effectiveness of these three interventions. We compare the biodiversity and carbon benefits and costs associated with each intervention, comparing observed and counterfactual outcomes based on in-depth field assessments and high-resolution remote sensing in the Brazilian Amazon deforestation frontier.

Monthly Soil Respiration in China's Forests: Spatiotemporal Patterns and Drivers Over 21 Years.

Forests play a critical role as terrestrial carbon sinks in mitigating climate change. However, accurate quantification of soil respiration (Rs)-the primary CO2 efflux from forests-remains challenging due to existing studies' overreliance on annual-scale estimates, which obscure fine-scale spatiotemporal dynamics and key drivers of Rs. Here, we developed a 500 m resolution monthly Rs dataset for China's forests (2000-2020) using remote sensing data and a geographically weighted machine learning model. A geographically weighted extreme gradient boosting model achieved the highest accuracy in pr

Risk Stratification for Graft Failure After Pediatric Heart Transplantation Using Random Survival Forests.

BACKGROUND: Prediction in pediatric heart transplantation is challenging due to clinical heterogeneity. This presents the dilemma of modeling non-linear relationships and complex variable structures. It may be overcome by survival-based machine learning techniques designed to accommodate time to event outcomes, contrary to traditional approaches. METHODS: In this study, we developed and evaluated a Random Survival Forest model to predict graft failure among pediatric heart transplant recipients using United Network for Organ Sharing registry data (post-July 2016). The primary outcome was graf

A general framework for nitrogen deposition effects on soil respiration in global forests.

Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have altered atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition to global forests, affecting carbon dioxide emissions from soils (soil respiration or SR) - one of the largest land-atmosphere carbon fluxes. However, experimental studies have demonstrated both positive and negative effects of N deposition on SR in global forests, leading to debates on how N deposition increases or decreases SR. We developed a framework for generalizing SR responses to N deposition using synthesized data from 168 N addition experiments worldwide and observed SR across the global

Growth of metal nanowire forests controlled through stress fields induced by grain gradients.

Pure metal nanowires (NWs) are one-dimensional nanomaterials with distinctive properties for various applications. Nevertheless, mass-growth forests have not been developed because of vapor pressure limitations, chemical reduction problems, or both. We succeeded in the mass growth of aluminum (Al) NW forests at desired locations by controlling atomic diffusion within the solid film. Whereas prior attention has focused only on how to increase the driving force, we show that focused ion beam irradiation created localized regions of high stress, which provided pathways for atomic diffusion as wel

Restoration treatments in urban park forests drive long-term changes in vegetation trajectories.

Municipalities are turning to ecological restoration of urban forests as a measure to improve air quality, ameliorate urban heat island effects, improve storm water infiltration, and provide other social and ecological benefits. However, community dynamics following urban forest restoration treatments are poorly documented. This study examines the long-term effects of ecological restoration undertaken in New York City, New York, USA, to restore native forest in urban park natural areas invaded by woody non-native plants that are regional problems. In 2009 and 2010, we sampled vegetation in 30

Diverse patterns of stored water use among saplings in seasonally dry tropical forests.

Tree species in seasonally dry tropical forests likely vary in their drought-survival mechanisms. Drought-deciduousness, which reduces water loss, and low wood density, which may permit dependence on stored water, are considered key traits. For saplings of six species at two distinct sites, we studied these and two associated traits: the seasonal amount of water released per stem volume ("water released") and the hydraulic capacitance of the stem (C). Two deciduous species with low stem density, Cavanillesia platanifolia and Bursera simaruba, had high C and high dry-season stem water potential

The recovery of damaged pine forests in an area formerly polluted by nitrogen.

An area in Lithuania containing coniferous stands of Scots pine and Norway spruce that were dead or damaged due to nitrogen pollution by a nitrogen fertilizer plant (JV Achema) was found to have expanded between 1974 and 1989 to a distance of 20 to 25 km northeast of the plant in the direction of prevailing winds. Over the last 10 years, when nitrogen pollution by the plant had decreased, a clear process of recovery of the damaged ecosystems could be observed. The following features of this process as it occurred in damaged Scots pine stands are discussed: (1) refoliation (or decreased defolia

Outcome Risk Modeling for Disability-Free Longevity: Comparison of Random Forest and Random Survival Forest Methods.

BACKGROUND: When creating risk prediction models for time-to-event data, methods that incorporate time are typically used. Random survival forests (RSF), an extension of random forests (RF), are one such class of models. We compared RSF to RF in the context of time-to-event outcomes in the ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) randomized controlled trial. We hypothesize that RSF will have superior discrimination and calibration versus RF. METHODS: Participants from ASPREE residing outside the US or with missing data were excluded. A total of 2,291 participants were assigned 1:1 i

Forest topsoil salvage and placement threshold depths for boreal forest revegetation as influenced by ecosite and substrate texture.

Forest topsoil is a critical source of native vegetative propagules and seeds for boreal forest land reclamation. However, optimal handling practices for this material and its interactions with underlying substrates remain poorly defined. This field study investigated effects of operational topsoil salvage and placement depths on native plant establishment, accounting for site conditions, substrate type, ecosite characteristics, and local climate. We evaluated varying salvage and placement depths across mineral and peat-mineral mix substrates. Shallow salvage (10 cm) maximized plant species ri

Impacts of forest harvesting on mobilization of Hg and MeHg in drained peatland forests on black schist or felsic bedrock.

Forest harvesting, especially when intensified harvesting method as whole-tree harvesting with stump lifting (WTHs) are used, may increase mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) leaching to recipient water courses. The effect can be enhanced if the underlying bedrock and overburden soil contain Hg. The impact of stem-only harvesting (SOH) and WTHs on the concentrations of Hg and MeHg as well as several other variables in the ditch water was studied using a paired catchment approach in eight drained peatland-dominated catchments in Finland (2008-2012). Four of the catchments were on felsic bedro
