Unilateral chest wall hypertrophy in Gardner syndrome: an extremely rare osseous manifestation.

BACKGROUND: The majority of new HIV infections are acquired through heterosexual transmission. There is urgent need for prevention methods to compliment behavior change and condom use. Topical microbicide represent a potential strategy for reduction of HIV transmission in women. METHODS: Monthly Colposcopy evaluations were performed during pelvic examinations among 299 women enrolled in the Phase 2 portion of HPTN 035 study at four sites (1 in USA, 3 in Southern Africa). This was a phase 2/2b, multisite, randomized, and controlled clinical trial with four arms: BufferGel, 0.5% PRO2000 Gel, pl

[Gastric cancer arising from gastric polyps in gardner syndrome - a case report].

The patient was a 48-year-old woman who was diagnosed with early gastric cancer during a long-term follow-up period for Gardner syndrome. Subtotal colectomy for colon leiomyoma was performed when the patient was 22 years old. Partial resection of the ileum was performed for ileum leiomyoma at the age of 27. Total resection of the remaining colon with ileostomy was performed for a pelvic desmoid tumor at the age of 40. In addition, resection of a desmoid tumor of the abdominal wall was performed 8 times in the 25 years since the first operation. During the follow-up for gastric polyps associate

Sudden death from hyponatremia and hypokalemia in a woman with Gardner syndrome.

The authors present the case of a 39-year-old woman with Gardner syndrome who died from marked hyponatremia and hypokalemia. Gardner syndrome is a rare variant of the familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome in which the affected individual develops thousands of polyps within the gastrointestinal tract, with a 100% risk of eventual malignant change. Individuals with Gardner syndrome also develop a variety of extra gastrointestinal abnormalities. In the case presented, a woman with a clinical history of Gardner syndrome who had previously undergone a total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis p

Hepatocellular carcinoma in children associated with Gardner syndrome or familial adenomatous polyposis.

PURPOSE: Gardner syndrome, a variant of familial adenomatous polyposis, is characterized by colonic polyps that undergo malignant change and benign and malignant extracolonic lesions. Tumors frequently associated with Gardner syndrome include carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater, papillary carcinoma of the thyroid, and, in children, hepatoblastoma. The childhood malignancies often precede the appearance of other manifestations by several years. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two patients are described. Gardner syndrome was diagnosed in a 15-year-old girl with fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma after

A novel APC mutation associated with Gardner syndrome in a Chinese family.

Gardner syndrome (GS) is a specific form of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), which manifests as colorectal polyps, multiple osteomas and soft tissue tumors, and in the oral cavity as osteomas of the jaws, odontomas, and abnormal tooth counts. The underlying cause of GS is attributed to mutations in the APC gene. Mutations in this gene disrupt the normal functioning of the protein and lead to the development of GS. To further investigate GS, a family affected by the syndrome was selected from Dongguan, Guangdong Province. The family members underwent a comprehensive survey, which involved

Superior vena cava syndrome due to mediastinal Gardner fibroma presenting as syncope.

Superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome refers to the clinical manifestation due to an obstruction in the SVC; resulting in decreased venous return from the head, neck and upper extremities. The obstruction can occur either due to tumour invasion of the vessel wall with associated thrombus or due to vessel wall compression by the tumour mass. The patient being reported is a young male who presented with recurrent episodes of syncope and was found to have mediastinal Gardner fibroma causing SVC syndrome. Gardner fibroma is a benign soft tissue lesion; and its occurrence in the mediastinum resulting i

A case report of Gardner syndrome with hereditary widespread osteomatous jaw lesions.

Gardner syndrome (GS) is an abnormality of familial adenomatous polyposis accompanied by characteristic jaw lesions. Gardner syndrome intestinal polyps have a 100% risk of undergoing malignant transformation; consequently, early identification and surgical intervention of the disease are important to prolong the life of the patient. We present a case of GS in a 55-year-old woman. Familial adenomatous polyposis, osteomatous jaw and ocular lesions, several dental abnormalities, and an abdominal desmoid tumor are the characteristic features of this case. This case demonstrates the presence of unu

Conservative management of a fourth ventricular epidermoid in a patient with Gardner syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Gardner Syndrome is a rare disease with clinical manifestations of familial intestinal polyposis with osteomas. Cutaneous and subcutaneous lesions are common and epidermoid cyst is a characteristic dermatologic finding. This case report presents a novel finding of an intracranial epidermoid situated in the fourth ventricle in a patient with Gardner Syndrome. This intracranial epidermoid has been followed with sequential magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for 10 years with progressive growth of the lesion. This suggests the conservative management is an option in patients with an enla

The clinical features and their impact on the prosthodontic management in a case of Gardner's syndrome.

Gardner's syndrome is a variant of Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP), a condition that manifests as hundreds of colorectal polyps likely to undergo malignant change by the fourth decade. Early diagnosis of this condition has the potential to be life saving for individuals and due to its inherited nature other family members can often also be affected. Additional features of Gardner's Syndrome include multiple jaw osteomas with missing teeth that can make prosthodontic treatment a challenge. This case report highlights the presenting features and the prosthodontic problems faced when treatin

Benign osteoma with Gardner syndrome: review of the literature and report of a case.

Gardner syndrome, a variant of familial adenomatous polyposis, is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by gastrointestinal polyps that develop in the colon as well as in the stomach and upper intestine (duodenum), multiple osteomas, and skin and soft tissue tumors. Cutaneous findings include epidermoid cysts, desmoid tumors, and other benign tumors. Polyps have a 100% risk of undergoing malignant transformation; consequently, early identification and therapy of the disease are critical. Osteoma is a benign neoplasm of bone tissue that is characterized by slow continuous growth and is th

Gardner's syndrome--the importance of early diagnosis: a case report and a review.

Gardner's syndrome (familial polyposis coli) is a genetic condition characterised by colonic polyps that carry a 100% risk of malignancy if untreated. Early diagnosis, in which an astute and knowledgeable dentist can play an essential role, is therefore of paramount importance. The presence of multiple unerupted teeth provides the dentist with a major pointer to the possible presence of this disease, which may be provisionally diagnosed on the detection of two other obvious features, namely osteomas and cutaneous lesions. This fact is clearly illustrated by the accompanying case report. Extrac

Gardner's syndrome associated with carcinoma of the duodenal bulb: report of a case.

A 49-year-old woman with Gardner's syndrome, who underwent total proctocolectomy in 1982, was found to have a cancer of the duodenal bulb. Subsequently, resection of the stomach and duodenal bulb was performed in 1983. The surgical specimen showed an ulcerating tumor in the duodenal bulb which was a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma histologically. Multiple adenomas were present in the gastric antrum and the duodenum. Duodenal cancer so far reported has been mostly confined to the periampullary region, and cancer of the duodenal bulb associated with familial polyposis coli has not been

Gastric adenocarcinoma complicating Gardner's syndrome in a North American woman.

Gastric carcinoma has not been recognized as a complication of Gardner's syndrome in the Western world. We report a 37-yr-old white woman with Gardner's syndrome who had gastric adenocarcinoma in association with diffuse gastric polyps. At the time of laparotomy, the disease was metastatic to regional lymph nodes. In addition, the patient had mesenteric and retroperitoneal fibromatosis, thyroid adenomas, a chest wall hemangioma, and fibrocystic disease of the breast. This is the first reported case of gastric adenocarcinoma complicating Gardner's syndrome in North America.
