A luminescent organic radical with two pyridyl groups: high photostability and dual stimuli-responsive properties, with theoretical analyses of photophysical processes.

Luminescent monoradicals are expected to show unique properties based on their doublet state, where establishing a method to improve their photostability is an important issue for expanding their photofunctionality. We synthesized a highly photostable luminescent organic radical, the bis(3,5-dichloro-4-pyridyl)(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl radical (bisPyTM), containing two pyridyl groups on a tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl radical (TTM) skeleton. bisPyTM in dichloromethane exhibited fluorescence with an emission peak wavelength, λem, of 650 nm. We visually detected an emission (λem = 712 nm

Evolving concepts of developmental auditory processing disorder (APD): a British Society of Audiology APD special interest group 'white paper'.

Children with listening difficulties, but normal audiometry, may be diagnosed with APD. The diagnosis is typically based on poor performance on tests of perception of both non-speech and speech stimuli. However, non-speech test results correlate only weakly with evaluations of speech-in-noise processing, cognitive skills, and caregiver evaluations of listening ability. The interpretation of speech test results is confounded by the involvement of language processing mechanisms. Overall, listening ability is associated more with higher-level, cognitive and analytic processing than with lower-lev

Selective adhesion, lipid exchange and membrane-fusion processes between vesicles of various sizes bearing complementary molecular recognition groups.

Equimolar mixtures of large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) obtained from mixtures of egg lecithin and lipids containing complementary hydrogen bonding head groups (barbituric acid (BAR) and 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine (TAP)) were shown to aggregate and fuse. These events have been studied in detail using electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering, and by fluorimetry using membrane or water-soluble fluorescence probes. It was shown that aggregation was followed by two competitive processes: a) lipid mixing leading to redispersion of the vesicles; b) fusion events generating much larger vesicles

Clinical effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and process evaluation of group schema therapy for eating disorders: study protocol for a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs), such as (atypical) Anorexia (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN), are difficult to treat, causing socioeconomic impediments. Although enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-E) is widely considered clinically effective, it may not be the most beneficial treatment for (atypical) AN and BN patients who do not show a rapid response after the first 4 weeks (8 sessions) of a CBT-E treatment. Alternatively, group schema therapy (GST) may be a valuable treatment for this ED population. Even though GST for EDs has yielded promising preliminary findings, the current body

Comprehensive summary of steroid metabolism in Comamonas testosteroni TA441: entire degradation process of basic four rings and removal of C12 hydroxyl group.

Comamonas testosteroni is one of the representative aerobic steroid-degrading bacteria. We previously revealed the mechanism of steroidal A,B,C,D-ring degradation by C. testosteroni TA441. The corresponding genes are located in two clusters at both ends of a mega-cluster of steroid degradation genes. ORF7 and ORF6 are the only two genes in these clusters, whose function has not been determined. Here, we characterized ORF7 as encoding the dehydrase responsible for converting the C12β hydroxyl group to the C10(12) double bond on the C-ring (SteC), and ORF6 as encoding the hydrogenase responsible

Downstream Processing of Crude Ultrasound-Extracted Pectin From Saba Banana (Musa acuminata x balbisiana (BBB Group) "Saba") Peel.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction of pectin from Saba banana (Musa acuminata x balbisiana (BBB Group) "Saba") peels produced crude pectin that requires further purification. Two downstream processes (alcohol washing (AW) and acid demethylation (AD)) were compared. AW involved gelatinous precipitate washing with 85% alcohol and pressing to squeeze out liquids, while AD involved a sequential AW of the dried pectin with 60% acidified alcohol, and 60% and 95% alcohol solutions. Results showed that both methods produced low methoxyl pectins with similar color, yield, and moisture content, with no sign

A Case of Group A Streptococcus Bacteremia and Infective Endocarditis Caused by Right Ovarian Tube Endometriosis Where the Patient's Perspective Was Key to the Diagnostic Process.

Group A streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) is a common organism that can cause upper respiratory infections. We encountered a case where GAS caused infective endocarditis (IE) due to an entry from the vagina. In this case, although echocardiography was negative, we were able to make a diagnosis of IE based on the 2023 Duke International Society for Cardiovascular Infectious Diseases Criteria, and we started antimicrobial therapy for IE. However, the patient subsequently developed persistent abdominal pain, which was atypical; hence, we reviewed the differential diagnosis. It is difficult to locate t

A comparison of various linear and non-linear signal processing techniques to separate uterine EMG records of term and pre-term delivery groups.

Various linear and non-linear signal-processing techniques were applied to three-channel uterine EMG records to separate term and pre-term deliveries. The linear techniques were root mean square value, peak and median frequency of the signal power spectrum and autocorrelation zero crossing; while the selected non-linear techniques were estimation of the maximal Lyapunov exponent, correlation dimension and calculating sample entropy. In total, 300 records were grouped into four groups according to the time of recording (before or after the 26th week of gestation) and according to the total leng

A processive versus a distributive mechanism of action correlates with differences in ability of normal and xeroderma pigmentosum group A endonucleases to incise damaged nucleosomal DNA.

A DNA endonuclease, isolated from the nuclei of normal human and xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group A (XPA) cells, which recognizes predominately pyrimidine dimers, was examined for the mechanism by which it locates sites of damage on UVC-irradiated DNA. In reaction mixtures with low ionic strengths (i.e. lacking KCl), the normal and XPA endonuclease locate sites of UV damage on both naked and reconstituted nucleosomal DNA by different mechanisms. On both of these substrates, the normal endonuclease acts by a processive mechanism, meaning that it binds non-specifically to DNA and scan

Recovery strategy of platinum group metal ruthenium (Ru) from spent SiC catalyst: Combined process of oxidation roasting and Fe smelting capture.

Platinum group metal Ru has been widely employed in catalysis due to its unique catalytic capabilities. Ru extraction from spent catalysts classified as hazardous waste possesses significant commercial and environmental value. However, the chemical inertness of SiC and the encapsulation of Ru by surface SiO2 layers pose a significant challenge to the efficient recovery of precious metals. Consequently, developing a technology to recover Ru from SiC substrates is essential for the sustainable use of Ru resources and can additionally enhance the application of SiC in catalysis. In this study, th

Removal of Fe(III)/Al(III)/Mg(II) by phosphonic group functionalized resin in wet-process phosphoric acid: Mechanism and intrinsic selectivity.

The removal of iron ions (Fe(III)), aluminum ions (Al(III)), and magnesium ions (Mg(II)) in phosphoric acid (H3PO4) solution is vital for the production of H3PO4 and supply of phosphate fertilizer. However, the mechanism and intrinsic selectivity for removal of Fe(III), Al(III), and Mg(II) from wet-process phosphoric acid (WPA) by phosphonic group (-PO3H2) functionalized MTS9500 are still unclear. In this work, the removal mechanisms were determined via combined analysis of FT-IR, XPS, molecular dynamics (MD), and quantum chemistry (QC) simulations based on density functional theory (DFT). Introducing a Phenyl End Group in the Inner Side Chains of A-DA'D-A Acceptors Enables High-Efficiency Organic Solar Cells Processed with Nonhalogenated Solvent.

Power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) processed by nonhalogenated solvents is unsatisfactory due to the unfavorable morphology. Herein, two new small molecule acceptors (SMAs) Y6-Ph and L8-Ph are synthesized by introducing a phenyl end group in the inner side chains of the SMAs of Y6 and L8-BO, respectively, for overcoming the excessive aggregation of SMAs in the long-time film forming processed by nonhalogenated solvents. First, the effect of the film forming time on the aggregation property and photovoltaic performance of Y6, L8-BO, Y6-Ph, and L8-Ph is studied by us
