BACKGROUND: Residents of remote communities in Australia and other geographically large countries have comparatively poorer access to high-quality primary health care. To inform ongoing policy development and practice in relation to remote area health service delivery, particularly in remote Indigenous communities, this review synthesizes the key findings of (1) a comprehensive study of workforce turnover and retention in remote Northern Territory (NT) of Australia and (2) a narrative review of relevant international literature on remote and rural health workforce retention strategies. Brucellosis is an important zoonosis worldwide. In livestock, it frequently causes chronic disease with reproductive failures that contribute to production losses, and in humans, it causes an often-chronic febrile illness that is frequently underdiagnosed in many low- and middle-income countries, including India. India has one of the largest ruminant populations in the world, and brucellosis is endemic in the country in both humans and animals. In November 2017, the International Livestock Research Institute invited experts from government, national research institutes, universities, and diffe

OBJECTIVES: A large number of Canadians spend time in correctional facilities each year, and they are likely to have poor health compared to the general population. Relatively little health research has been conducted in Canada with a focus on people who experience detention or incarceration. We aimed to conduct a Delphi process with key stakeholders to define priorities for research in prison health in Canada for the next 10 years.
SETTING: We conducted a Delphi process using an online survey with two rounds in 2014 and 2015.
PARTICIPANTS: We invited key stakeholders in prison health resear

BACKGROUND: In 2013, an estimated 2.8 million newborns died and 2.7 million were stillborn. A much greater number suffer from long term impairment associated with preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction, congenital anomalies, and perinatal or infectious causes. With the approaching deadline for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015, there was a need to set the new research priorities on newborns and stillbirth with a focus not only on survival but also on health, growth and development. We therefore carried out a systematic exercise to set newborn health res

Recent Ebola epidemics, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and emerging infectious disease threats have highlighted the importance of global infectious diseases and responses to public health emergencies. Ophthalmologists are essential health care workers who provide urgent and emergent vision care services during outbreaks and address the ocular consequences of epidemic and pandemic infectious diseases. In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) identified high priority pathogens likely to cause a future epidemic with the goal of guiding research and development to improve diagnostic tests, vac

Lack of social connection is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, on a par with other common risk factors like physical inactivity and smoking. Yet we still know surprisingly little about how social connection affects cognitive health. Our review provides updated guidance for researchers interested in testing new mechanistic models of social connection and cognitive health over the life course. First, we conceptualize social connection and its various components. Second, we provide readers with a supplemental compendium of social connection measures and discuss ho

BACKGROUND: Mental health was identified as a top research priority of the cystic fibrosis (CF) community. The CF Foundation formed a Mental Health Research Priorities Working Group and sought input into specific mental health topics for research prioritization.
METHODS: A survey of adults with CF, caregivers/family members, CF Foundation staff, and multidisciplinary CF healthcare providers elicited feedback regarding prioritization of a range of mental health research topics. We compared quantitative and qualitative responses based on respondent type and demographic characteristics, and anal

Survival from congenital heart disease (CHD) strongly depends on local health system capacity and lesion complexity, yet the extent to which CHD is recognised within national health policy frameworks remains poorly understood. We aimed to assess the presence, framing, and level of policy commitment to CHD within national health priority documents across countries of different income levels. We conducted a cross-sectional policy content analysis using publicly available national health strategies, child health plans, non-communicable disease strategies, and universal health coverage roadmaps. IMPORTANCE: Pediatric migrant health has been identified by the World Health Organization as a critical area for interdisciplinary research to improve care for children and adolescents with migration experience. Nevertheless, research agendas have rarely been shaped systematically by individuals with lived and professional experience, limiting relevance and impact.
OBJECTIVE: To identify and prioritize the most important unanswered research questions in pediatric migrant health in Europe through a structured, participatory priority-setting process.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis legalization has substantial impacts on public health across the United States, yet the perspectives of local elected officials who oversee regulatory environments and make decisions about cannabis business retail licensing, taxation, and marketing restrictions remain largely unstudied. Understanding how these policymakers prioritize health considerations relative to economic and other concerns is essential for developing effective public health advocacy and anticipating barriers to implementing health-protective cannabis regulations.

Our community-based participatory research (CBPR) partnership convened an in-person, bilingual empowerment theory-based community forum to disseminate and translate findings from our trial of Nuestra Comunidad Saludable (Our Healthy Community), a multilevel intervention designed to improve uptake of COVID-19 testing and vaccination among Spanish-speaking Latine communities in North Carolina. The forum brought together community members, healthcare providers, organizational representatives, and academic researchers from across North Carolina. Drawing on findings from the intervention trial, par

BACKGROUND: War-affected youth often suffer from multiple co-occurring mental health problems. These youth often live in low-resource settings where it may be infeasible to provide mental health services that simultaneously address all of these co-occurring mental health issues. It is therefore important to identify the areas where targeted interventions would do the most good.
METHODS: This analysis uses observational data from 3 waves of a longitudinal study on mental health in a sample of 529 war-affected youth (24.2% female; ages 10-17 at T1, 2002) in Sierra Leone. We regressed 4 mental h

Artificial intelligence (AI) has entered psychiatry at scale, yet its clinical impact remains constrained by a sizable gap between technical validation and real-world implementation. The central barriers are no longer computational, but infrastructural: unreliable measurement systems, incomplete governance frameworks, and insufficient standards for clinical evidence and integration. This paper synthesizes insights from a 2026 American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) study group examining how to responsibly translate AI into clinical mental health care. Building on this perspective, w

Fungal diseases have not been taken seriously in public health agendas as well as research priorities, despite of globally causing an estimated two million deaths every year, and the emergence of many troublesome fungal pathogens like Candida auris, azole resistant Aspergillus fumigatus, terbinafine and azole resistant dermatophytes, and zoonotic sporotrichosis in humans. Fungi are also responsible for huge losses of agricultural products and stored crops as well as recent massive and unexpected mortality in animals caused by white-nose syndrome in the bats and Chytridiomycosis in amphibians.

This study was designed to estimate the burden of urologic diseases in the Islamic Republic of Iran as a practical method for defining public health priorities. Using World Health Organization guidelines for national burden of disease studies, 6 steps were performed: selecting diseases to include; dynamic modelling of diseases; gathering data about urologic diseases; computing the local disability weights of urologic diseases; data analysis with DisMod II; and computing the disability-adjusted life years for each disease. Renal calculus, acute cystitis, chronic prostatitis, benign prostate hyp

Agriculture is a human activity, which includes a number of different tasks and occupies a huge number of people worldwide. Estimates of World Bank for 2003 suggest that 51% of globalpopulation lives in rural areas. ILO estimates that 1.3 billion of workers are engaged in agriculture, and they represent almost a half of the total number of economically active subjects (2,838,897,404). In developed countries, agriculture workers are only a small fraction of the whole work force (up to 9% according to ILO data), while in developing countries, especially in Asia, agriculture workers represent up

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry maintains an active, state-based surveillance system to record the public health consequences of hazardous substance releases. During 1992, the 9 participating states reported 1,876 events; 80% of the events occurred at fixed facilities, and 20% were transportation related. The most frequently released substances were volatile organic compounds, acids, herbicides, and ammonia. In 263 events, 600 people were injured and 4 died. Employees were injured more frequently (71%) than first responders or the general public. The most frequently report
