The aim was to investigate and analyze the social, health, and economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Indigenous communities in the province of Catamarca (Argentina), while also identifying the various strategies developed by these communities to address this phenomenon. The research was conducted between December 2021 and December 2022, with an exploratory nature and a predominantly qualitative methodological design. During the fieldwork, 15 in-depth interviews were conducted with community authorities, community members, territorial technicians, and health workers, complemented by 30 st

This study addresses the Brazilian Ministry of Health's initiative to standardize procedures for vaccinating isolated Indigenous peoples who require the intervention, aiming to guide expeditionary health teams in effectively planning post-contact vaccination procedures and preparing for future contacts, aiming to improve them. We also discuss some challenges that need to be overcome to make this initiative more equitable, given the ethnic and health disparities so typical of Brazilian Indigenous peoples, especially the Korubo Indigenous People, who live in isolation in the Amazon Rainforest. Lunatic asylums formed part of the civic infrastructure that was constructed out of British colonists invading and subsequently colonising unceded, Indigenous Australian lands during the eighteenth and nineteenth century. This historical narrative examined nineteenth century primary and secondary sources including, patient lists, medical files, and government correspondence, to provide insight into the experiences of Indigenous Australians admitted to Australia's earliest lunatic asylums. Awareness that lunatic asylums formed part of the structure imposed during colonisation, provides nurses a

OBJECTIVES: To foster a critical analysis of the racial inequities affecting the oral health (OH) of Indigenous peoples in Brazil, framed by the social determination of the health-disease-care process (SDHP).
METHODS: This critical literature review articulates the themes of colonisation, Indigenous peoples' oral health and racial inequities in health through the lens of SDHP. It explores how racial inequities affecting the oral health of Indigenous peoples in Brazil are socially determined, understanding that their health and illness profiles depend on the socioeconomic and legal contexts in

Ecosystem health and zoonotic diseases are closely interwoven. Even as we grapple with the SARS-Coronavirus-2 pandemic, which may have its origins in wildlife, weakening environmental policies in the Brazilian Amazon are elevating the risk of additional zoonotic spillover events. We examine the links between deforestation and disease emergence in the Amazon, as illustrated by outbreaks of yellow fever virus, Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus, and Oropouche virus. It has been well established that in Brazil, indigenous territories exhibit lower rates of forest conversion and degradation than

In the context of the over-representation of women who are Indigenous in prisons and historical and structural barriers to health, we undertook a scoping review to understand research regarding the reproductive and maternal health experiences of Indigenous women in prison in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the USA. We searched online databases in May 2022 since inception, as well as Google and governmental websites between December 2022 and March 2023. We identified 8 eligible articles. Most studies (5) were conducted in Australia, while 2 were conducted in Canada and 1 in the USA. There w

OBJECTIVE: Methodological criteria that characterise ethically sound community-based studies are often described in overviews but are rarely documented in clinical studies. Research investigating the health of Aboriginal Australians is often small-scale, descriptive and largely driven by non-Indigenous people. The 'community-controlled' model of research relating to Aboriginal peoples health is a form of 'participatory' research that shifts the balance of control towards those being researched. This paper describes the methodological issues and principles that underpin community-controlled hea

As Aboriginal women, Registered Nurses, and health promotion and public health academics, our perspectives are shaped by both our lived experiences and our professional practice. We have worked across clinical care, health promotion, public health, research, and academia, partnering with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, health services, and organisations to improve health and wellbeing. These experiences have reinforced our understanding that meaningful and sustainable health promotion is built on relationships, trust, and shared decision-making, rather than simply the applic

Tobacco use and associated disease burden remain high among Indigenous communities in India. Despite an overall decline in tobacco consumption over the last few decades, the social disparities in tobacco use have widened, with Indigenous communities experiencing the least decline. Existing tobacco control policies lack specific considerations for Indigenous communities. Hence, as part of a broader research initiative focusing on the health of Indigenous communities, we explored how parliamentarians in India have framed their concerns about tobacco in reference to Indigenous communities over ti

This essay is an introduction to the thematic issue of Transcultural Psychiatry in honor of the work of Michael Chandler and Christopher Lalonde, developmental psychologists who made essential contributions to the study of identity and wellness among Indigenous youth in Canada and internationally. We outline their major contributions and illustrate the ways their innovative theory and methods have inspired decades of research, including the recent work presented in this issue, which addresses four broad themes: (1) the importance of a developmental perspective in mental health research; (2) th

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Oppression and violence associated with colonisation have contributed to intergenerational trauma and health inequities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Health promotion can help reduce inequities by strengthening connections that support social and emotional wellbeing and enable conditions for communities to lead healthy lives. While culturally responsive health promotion strategies exist, it is unknown the extent to which these account for trauma.
METHODS: We conducted a narrative review to examine the intersection of evidence describing social and emotion

BACKGROUND: Aboriginal Australians experience a disproportionately high burden of alcohol-related harm compared to the general Australian population. Alcohol treatment approaches that simultaneously target individuals and families offer considerable potential to reduce these harms if they can be successfully tailored for routine delivery to Aboriginal Australians. The Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) and Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) are two related interventions that are consistent with Aboriginal Australians' notions of health and wellbeing. This paper aims to des

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Many Indigenous Australians are dealing with a wide range of sexual health issues including contraception, HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. The Indigenous Peer Education Program provided training to young, marginalised and disadvantaged Indigenous people to become sexual health peer educators within their communities.
METHODS: The initiative comprised peer educator training, capacity building, and the development and dissemination of sexual health educational materials through an arts-based strategy. Evaluation involved a retrospective qualitative methodolo

Diverse conceptualisation of reproductive health is a major public health problem in Africa, especially among indigenous communities were cultural beliefs shape health behaviours and outcomes. This review, following the PRISMA framework, looked at how indigenous African people understand reproductive health by examining studies published from 2015 to 2025. A thorough search was done in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and African Journals Online, resulting in 30 studies being identified for this study. An analysis of these showed that ideas about fertility, pregnancy, and contraception

BACKGROUND: This study compared the reasons for dental presentations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian adults at the Nepean Centre for Oral Health, NSW, Australia.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on adult patients presenting between 1 July and 31 December 2019. Clinical notes were audited and categorized as either 'emergency' (pain, dental infection, dental trauma, loose teeth or dental implants, bleeding) or 'conservative' (dental check-ups, examinations, prosthodontic, restorative, periodontal, or non-emergency endodontic therapy).
RESULTS: A total of 466

OBJECTIVES: Human T-cell leukaemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1), an STI, is reported to be highly prevalent in Indigenous communities in Central Australia. HTLV-1 is an incurable, chronic infection which can cause Adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATL). ATL is associated with high morbidity and mortality, with limited treatment options. We studied the prevalence of HTLV-1 and ATL in the state of Queensland, Australia.
METHODS: Serum samples stored at healthcare services in Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns and at haemodialysis units in Brisbane (2018-2019) were screened for HTLV-1/2 antibodies using th
