Background: Oral cancer represents a critical global health equity challenge, with over 80% of cases occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and markedly lower survival rates in these regions compared to high-income countries (HICs). Objective: To examine oral cancer disparities in LMICs through a global health equity lens by analyzing prevention strategies, early detection programs, and treatment access barriers, with the aim of identifying evidence-based interventions to reduce these inequities. Methods: This comprehensive narrative review synthesized evidence from peer-reviewe

BACKGROUND: It is widely recognised that the pursuit of sustainable development cannot be accomplished without addressing inequality, or observed differences between subgroups of a population. Monitoring health inequalities allows for the identification of health topics where major group differences exist, dimensions of inequality that must be prioritised to effect improvements in multiple health domains, and also population subgroups that are multiply disadvantaged. While availability of data to monitor health inequalities is gradually improving, there is a commensurate need to increase, with

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Despite various efforts to reduce cancer mortality, such as decreasing tobacco use, improving early detection and prevention methods, and enhancing cancer care and treatments, certain racial and ethnic groups continue to experience higher cancer incidence and mortality rates, along with shorter survival compared to other groups. Several factors, including socioeconomic status, environmental influences, diet, and behavior, contribute to these racial disparities. More importantly, scientists have identified a genetic basis for these ob

Today, considerations of disability are a vital part of health law scholarship and teaching, but that was not always the case. This Essay traces how disability's role in health law has grown over the past three decades, alongside the author's own evolution as a health and disability law scholar. The recent official designation of disabled people as a health disparities population is encouraging, but much work remains to achieve health equity for disabled persons.

Intersectional Multilevel Analysis of Individual Heterogeneity and Discriminatory Accuracy (MAIHDA) has been welcomed as a new gold standard for quantitative evaluation of intersectional inequalities, and it is being rapidly adopted across the health and social sciences. In their commentary "What does the MAIHDA method explain?", Wilkes and Karimi (2024) raise methodological concerns with this approach, leading them to advocate for the continued use of conventional single-level linear regression models with fixed-effects interaction parameters for quantitative intersectional analysis. In this

Gambling is a legitimate leisure activity in many countries that many people use. However, some of them suffer significant harm because of gambling. This may involve economic, social, physical or mental harm. These harms are not only suffered by the individual gambler, but affect the family, the community and society. The aim of this text is to propose a conceptual framework for understanding the determinants of gambling and its related harms and thus, contribute to the development of prevention policies to reduce its impact on health. The framework proposed in this manuscript places present e

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of food allergy is rising among US children. Little is known about racial/ethnic disparities in food allergy.
OBJECTIVE: We performed a systematic literature review to understand racial/ethnic disparities in food allergy in the United States.
METHODS: We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus for original data about racial/ethnic disparities in the diagnosis, prevalence, treatment, or clinical course of food allergy or sensitization, with a particular focus on black (African American) race. Articles were analyzed by study methodology, racial/ethnic composition

Disparities in health and healthcare plague provinces' residents. This means that different subgroups of the population have differences in health and healthcare. Examples include socio-economic status, location of residence and disability status. Disparities generate searching questions: does where you live, or who you are, affect your health or the quality or accessibility of healthcare you receive?

Background: The World Health Organization's (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) is marked by socioeconomic diversity, political instability, displacement, and environmental risks. With nearly 745 million people across 22 countries, the region faces a complex "triple burden" of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), communicable diseases (CDs), and injuries. Objective: This paper provides an updated overview of the epidemiological landscape of the EMR by linking current disease burdens with socioeconomic, behavioural, environmental, and health system determinants. It highlights regional dispari

Social inequalities are strongly associated with disparities in oral health, particularly in the development of childhood caries. This 4-year cohort study analyzed the impact of socioeconomic status (SES)- defined on the basis of the health insurance type- on the prevalence, treatment, and recurrence of dental caries in children. A total of 198 children (21 with social insurance, 177 with private insurance) were included. Caries prevalence at baseline was significantly higher in children with social insurance (95 % with >4 caries) compared to those with private insurance (29 % with >4 caries).

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy worldwide. Breast cancer survivors face an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), a leading cause of death in this group. Social determinants of health (SDoHs), operationalized as economic, environmental, and psychosocial factors, play an important role in CVD disparities. However, few studies have examined how SDoHs are associated with CVD disparities in this population, and no systematic review has addressed their multilevel influences.
METHODS: This systematic review summarizes the current evidence on the relation

The dysregulation of tumorigenesis at the epigenetic level entails erratic gene expression, in which changes do not rely on alterations to the genetic sequence. Such changes are often orchestrated by mechanisms that involve modifying DNA or the histones that package it, as well as interrupting or suppressing microRNAs. For instance, tumor suppressor genes may be turned off, oncogenes can be turned on, or the genes affecting cellular genetic stability may be damaged recognizably, i.e., with certain patterns of expression, such as the hypermethylation of the BRCA1 gene in some types of breast ca

BACKGROUND: Sex and gender disparities persist across biomedical research, clinical care, and health policy, despite increasing recognition of sex-specific disease mechanisms and treatment responses. Underrepresentation of women in clinical trials continues to produce male-centric treatment protocols and insufficient data to support precision care.
METHODS: This narrative review applies a translational science framework to examine recurring and cross-cutting gaps in sex and gender health science. Rather than cataloging all disease areas, the review uses three exemplar domains-mental and neuro

The number of people experiencing homelessness in a growing challenge across the four countries of the UK. Homelessness bring with it a multitude of issues, including health inequality and shorter life expectancies Nurses and other healthcare professionals play an important role in providing health services to people experiencing homelessness. This article argues that ill health in the family and delayed development in the children, caused by homelessness, places a greater demand for NHS services, all of which could be prevented by the family being suitably housed.

Women bear a disproportionate burden of knee osteoarthritis (KOA), yet global research systematically underrepresents sex-specific and context-sensitive analyses, limiting precision care and equitable interventions. We conducted a scoping review following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, systematically mapping studies on KOA in adults from 2000 to 2024 across PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. A predefined, version-controlled protocol was maintained with timestamped revisions and an independent audit to ensure methodological transparency. Dual independent screening, data extra

Tobacco use is related to persistent health disparities and is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide. The negative effects of tobacco on health have been a longstanding public health issue. Historically, the US response to the detrimental impact of smoking has been related to taxes and public bans. Although these interventions have reduced overall smoking rates, little has been done to reduce tobacco-related disparities, especially among racial and ethnic minority groups, low-income groups, and rural populations. As the immediate past president of the National Medical Association, I

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to discuss racial and ethnic differences in the prevalence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), disparities in peripartum and postpartum outcomes, and strategies to improve health equity.
RECENT FINDINGS: Racial disparities in HDP are significant contributors to maternal morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of preeclampsia has increased over the last 20 years, with the highest prevalence among non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native individuals. Black birthing individuals are at increased risk for cardiovascular-relate
