The Cleft palate-craniofacial journal : official publication of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association2019eng
OBJECTIVE: Simulation-based training is a relatively new inclusion to surgical training curricula, with promises of achieving increased competency while maximizing patient safety. Cleft palate, which contributes significantly to the global burden of surgically treatable diseases, is a challenging repair to learn due to the high level of skill and dexterity required, delicate oral tissues, and limited space of an infant oral cavity. Simulation training can allow cleft palate education to move from an observational to a competency-based learning. Hence, this systematic review presents the models

INTRODUCTION: Simulation has become an increasingly important educational strategy in veterinary surgical training. This is driven by ethical considerations, the need to standardize skill acquisition, and limitations associated with training based on live animals and cadavers. However, the characteristics, scope, and validation of simulators used in veterinary surgery remain heterogeneous and insufficiently systematized. This study aimed to systematically review and characterize the simulators used in veterinary surgical education, focusing on their characteristics, applications, and validatio

OBJECTIVES: During a 'cannot intubate, cannot oxygenate' situation, asphyxia can lead to cardiac arrest. In this stressful situation, two complex algorithms facilitate decision-making to save a patient's life: difficult airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. However, the extent to which competition between the two algorithms causes conflicts in the execution of pivotal treatment remains unknown. Due to the rare incidence of this situation and the very low feasibility of such an evaluation in clinical reality, we decided to perform a randomised crossover simulation research study.

OBJECTIVE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with incidence and mortality rising in low- and middle-income (LMICs) countries. Expanding the number of healthcare professionals trained in colonoscopy is crucial to addressing the increasing cancer burden. We developed a colonoscopy simulation-based training course and assessed whether training on locally developed low-fidelity (LF) simulation models resulted in skill acquisition and confidence comparable to training on high-fidelity (HF) models.
DESIGN: A randomized crossover trial was conduc

OBJECTIVE: Reduction in patient-facing teaching encounters has limited practical exposure to Emergency Medicine for medical students. Simulation has traditionally provided an alternative to patient-facing learning, with increasing integration in courses. Rapid advancements in technology facilitate simulation of realistic complex simulations encountered in the emergency setting. This study evaluated the efficacy of high-fidelity simulation in undergraduate emergency trauma medicine teaching.
METHODS: A consultant trauma expert delivered an introductory lecture, followed by consultant-led small

BACKGROUND: A task trainer is defined as a model that represents a part or region of the human body such as an arm and an abdomen… generally used to support procedural skills training. Concepts for consideration when selecting a task trainer include fidelity and cognitive load. Insertion of small - bore FTs in acutely ill patients continues to be a high - risk skill. The most frequent complication is insertion of the F T into the pulmonary system, which can lead to pneumothorax, pneumonitis and death. Training consists of placing the FT under electromagnetic visual assistance in a task trainer

Simulation training has been effectively used to integrate didactic knowledge and technical skills in emergency and critical care medicine. In this article, we introduce a novel model of simulating lung ultrasound and the features of lung sliding and pneumothorax by performing a hand ultrasound. The simulation model involves scanning the palmar aspect of the hand to create normal lung sliding in varying modes of scanning and to mimic ultrasound features of pneumothorax, including "stratosphere/barcode sign" and "lung point." The simple, reproducible, and readily available simulation model we d

Knowledge of ureteric anatomy is essential for ureteric injury prevention in laparoscopic gynecologic surgery. Rates of injury increase with limited surgical experience and reduced surgical volume. Currently, there are no low-fidelity or high-fidelity simulation models for teaching and practicing ureteric dissection. Our goal was to design a laparoscopic simulation model for retroperitoneal anatomy with high face validity that is low-cost and easily reproducible. A low-fidelity 3-dimensional simulation model was developed that represents key anatomic structures encountered during retroperitone

AUDIENCE: The low fidelity trainer for fiberoptic scope is designed to train emergency medicine (EM) residents PGY I-IV, and medical students interested in EM.
INTRODUCTION: Fiberoptic intubation is a skill that Emergency Medicine (EM) providers should be familiar with, though it is a rarely encountered procedure in the clinical setting. Approximately 1% of endotracheal intubations are performed using fiberoptic intubation.1,2 The success rate of first attempt fiberoptic intubation is about 50%. When fiberoptic intubation is used as a rescue device it has been shown to be about 70 % successfu

In our healthcare system, mindful of patient safety and the reduction of medical errors, simulation-based training has emerged as the cornerstone of medical education, allowing quality training in complete safety for patients. Initiated by anaesthesiologists, this teaching mode effectively allows a gradual transfer of learning, and has become an essential tool in cardiology teaching. Cardiologists are embracing simulation to master complex techniques in interventional cardiology, to manage crisis situations and unusual complications and to develop medical teamwork. Simulation methods in cardio

Surgical simulation has been used extensively for learning microtia reconstruction and has almost exclusively involved framework creation. However, soft tissue reconstruction in microtia is equally challenging and would benefit from a simulation platform. This study aimed to describe the development and preliminary evaluation of a high-fidelity soft tissue microtia simulator. Three-dimensional modeling software, fused deposition 3-dimensional printing, adhesive techniques, silicones, and polyurethane rubbers were utilized to create a right lobular-type microtia simulator that comprises skin, s

Strict trainee work-week hour restrictions, increased complexities of surgical care, and shifting hospital policies have posed challenges to operating room training for residents in high-resource regions. A shortage of cleft-trained surgeon educators and inconsistent training curricula further limit exposure to cleft operative education in low-resource settings. Furthermore, teaching cleft surgery can be difficult given the confined space of the infant oral cavity and the small, delicate flaps used for reconstruction. In the face of these challenges, the role of simulation has expanded in surg

Simulation-based training is increasingly used to prepare family caregivers of children with tracheostomies for the complex demands of home care. This scoping review synthesized 11 United States-based studies published between 2013 and 2024, examining simulation program components, instructional strategies, and reported outcomes. Most programs incorporated high-fidelity simulations before discharge and focused on emergency preparedness and routine care. Reported outcomes included improvements in caregiver confidence, knowledge, and satisfaction, though few studies used validated tools or asses

INTRODUCTION: Traditional cardiology orientation training offers limited exposure to acute overnight decision-making under high cognitive load. Simulation provides a safe, reproducible environment for deliberate practice and reflection.
METHODS: A multi-scenario, high-fidelity "night-float" simulation was implemented for incoming cardiology fellows at the NCH Rooney Heart Institute. Fellows managed sequential acute cardiovascular emergencies with embedded nurses and standardized patients, followed by structured debriefing using the PEARLS framework. Pre- and post-simulation surveys assessed c

In the management of severe trauma, the aim is to assess the patient's clinical stability as quickly as possible, enabling referral to imaging (whole-body CT scan, embolization if necessary) or the operating room, or even the decision to perform in situ surgery (resuscitation thoracotomy). To cope with these critical situations, team training is essential, with the aim of ensuring the reproducibility of the difficulties encountered. High-fidelity in situ simulation is the ideal tool for meeting this training challenge.

PURPOSE: Mixed reality (MR) simulations are increasingly used in medical training to provide safe, controllable, and repeatable practice environments. While visual fidelity (VF) and interaction fidelity (IF) are known to influence user experience (UX), their respective effects on performance and UX in complex, precision-based medical procedures remain insufficiently understood.
METHODS: We conducted a within-subjects user study investigating the effects of VF (high vs. low) and IF (tangible vs. virtual interaction) in a precise needle insertion task. A non-immersive setup served as a referenc
