A nursing home in Arab-Israeli society: targeting utilization in a changing social and economic environment.

This article is a case study of the first 10 years of operation (1992-2002) of the Dabouriya Home for the Aged, the first publicly funded culturally adapted nursing home for Israeli citizens of Arab descent. Although 44% of Arab Israelis and 26% of Jewish Israelis aged 65 and older are disabled, in 1999, 4.3% of the Jewish population but only 0.7% of the Arab-Israeli population aged 65 or older lived in long-term care institutions; disabled Arab-Israeli elderly were mainly cared for by families. As Arab-Israeli society modernizes and traditional caregiving is reduced, alternatives must be foun

Family and Home Environment Predictors of Children's 24-Hour Movement Guideline Adherence: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Background: During summer, children may meet fewer 24 hours Movement Guidelines (24 hr-MGs) [moderate-vigorous physical activity (PA): ≥60 minutes/day, screen time: ≤2 hours/day, sleep: 9-11 hours/day) compared with the school year. Structured environments within community settings (e.g., summer programs) support guideline adherence. Information about the relationship between structured home environments and 24 hr-MGs is needed. This mixed-methods study examined which features of the family, home, and community environment supported children in meeting 24 hr-MGs during the school year and summ

Home literacy environment profiles of children with language impairment: associations with caregiver- and child-specific factors.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies suggest a positive relationship between the home literacy environment (HLE) and children's language and literacy skills, yet very little research has focused on the HLE of children with language impairment (LI). Children with LI are at risk for reading difficulties; thus, understanding the nature and frequency of their home literacy interactions is warranted. AIMS: To identify unique HLE profiles within a large sample of children with LI, and to determine relevant caregiver- and child-specific factors that predict children's profile membership. METHODS & PROCEDUR

Cognitive, Noncognitive, and Home Environment Correlates of Reading Difficulties in Primary-Grade Students With Language Impairment.

Purpose This article first aimed to examine the cognitive (rapid automatized naming, phonological awareness, working memory, nonverbal cognition, and language) correlates of reading difficulty in children with language impairment (LI). Second, we considered whether noncognitive (effortful control, social competence, and behavior problems) correlates offered any explanatory value above that of cognitive factors. Third, we examined whether home environment (specifically household organization and home learning environment) would offer an additional explanatory value. Method The sample included 1

Home environment and suspected atopic eczema in Japanese infants: the Osaka Maternal and Child Health Study.

Atopic eczema is most commonly diagnosed in children under the age of 5 yr. Environmental factors during pregnancy or in early life may confer risk for childhood atopic eczema. The present prospective study examined the relationship of the perinatal home environment and the risk of suspected atopic eczema among Japanese infants under the age of 1. Study subjects were 865 parent-child pairs. The term 'suspected atopic eczema' was used to define an outcome based on our questionnaire at 2-9 months postpartum. Adjustment was made for maternal age, gestation, family income, maternal and paternal ed

Fruit and Vegetable Intake and Home Nutrition Environment among Low-Income Minority Households with Elementary-Aged Children.

Racial/ethnic and socioeconomic differences were shown to have an influence on child fruit and vegetable intake. This study examined the associations between parent and child fruit and vegetable intake and the home nutrition environment among Hispanic/Latino and African American families. Through a cross-sectional study design, self-reported surveys (n = 6074) were obtained from adult-child dyad participants enrolled in Brighter Bites, an evidence-based health promotion program, in the fall of 2018. For every once/day increase in frequency of parent FV intake, there was an increase in child FV

Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) in Chinese children and its association with respiratory symptoms and home environment.

The association between home environments and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) has been insufficiently investigated. We measured FeNO levels in children aged 4-8 years (N = 105) in Tianjin, China, and examined their association with respiratory symptoms and various indoor environmental parameters, namely house dust mite allergens and phthalates in dust, dampness, environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and furry pets (dogs/cats) in the home. FeNO levels were significantly higher in children with diagnosed asthma (p < 0.001) and pneumonia (p = 0.03). Exposure to Diisononyl phthalate (DiNP) - a

Experimental of thermal field and human activities on particle distribution of home peritoneal dialysis environments in winter.

The thermal environment is a critical factor for the safety of home peritoneal dialysis (PD), where sterile procedures are repeatedly performed under winter heating conditions. Yet, little is known about how thermal fields influence airborne particle dynamics in such settings. In this study, a full-scale experimental chamber was constructed to reproduce a typical winter PD room. Representative activities, including cleaning, window opening, air-conditioning operation, and walking, were systematically examined under controlled thermal conditions. Particle concentrations, temperature stratificat
