[Urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer-data from 17,149 patients from 125 certified centers].

BACKGROUND: In addition to erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence is the most common functional limitation after radical prostatectomy (RPE) for prostate cancer (PCa). The German S3 guideline recommends informing patients about possible effects of the therapy options, including incontinence. However, only little data on continence from routine care in German-speaking countries after RPE are currently available, which makes it difficult to inform patients. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work is to present data on the frequency and severity of urinary incontinence after RPE from routine care.

Extracorporeal magnetic innervation treatment for urinary incontinence.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal magnetic innervation (ExMI) is a new technology used for pelvic muscle strengthening for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. We explored whether this new technology is effective for patients with urge incontinence, as well as those with stress urinary incontinence. METHODS: We studied 20 patients with urge incontinence and 17 patients with stress urinary incontinence. The Neocontrol system (Neotonus Inc., Marietta, GA) was used. Treatment sessions were for 20 min, twice a week for 8 weeks. Evaluations were performed by bladder diaries, one-hour pad weight

Pad weighing for reduction of indwelling urinary use and catheter-associated urinary tract infection: a quality improvement project.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections pose a significant risk to hospitalized patients. Measuring accurate urinary output is a common reason for indwelling catheterizations in acutely ill patients. The risk of catheter-associated infections may be eliminated while maintaining ability to measure urinary output of incontinent patients through the use of a highly absorbent pad and weighing postincontinence. The dry pad weight is subtracted from the wet pad weight and the resulting difference (expressed in grams) equals the volume of urine leaked into the pad in milliliters. We found that u

Validating the incontinence symptom severity index: a self-assessment instrument for voiding symptom severity in women.

PURPOSE: Most voiding symptom self-assessment instruments assess either symptom bother or effect on quality of life. The Incontinence Symptom Severity Index is an instrument for self-assessment of severity of female urinary storage and voiding symptoms, rather than symptom bother or effects of symptoms on quality of life. We assessed the validity of the Incontinence Symptom Severity Index for female voiding symptom self-assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Incontinence Symptom Severity Index assesses 8 symptom domains, including emptying, urgency, urge incontinence, nocturia, daytime freque

Promoting social continence using incontinence management products.

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common problem which affects men and women for a variety of reasons. For some people with UI cure is not achievable. For others, time is required to accurately diagnose and treat their urinary symptoms. In order to improve quality of life for people with UI, health professionals require awareness of the products available to achieve social continence. Continence products and devices fall into three categories: collective devices, containment products and occlusive devices. This article provides a brief overview of the more common products available and discusses

[Incontinence aids].

Incontinence aids are mechanical devices that help reduce, capture, absorb or channel urinary and stool loss. They can exert a significant positive impact on the quality of life and the social integration of those affected, as well as provide relief to their care-givers. Incontinence aids are used as a bridge until conservative and operative treatments bring continence, as a complement to other therapies or as a long-term course of treatment. The selection of appropriate incontinence aids, such as vaginal pessaries, penis clamps, and tampons, urinals, urine and faecal collectors, absorbing aid

Vaginal diaphragm rings in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence.

To assess the effectiveness of wearing vaginal diaphragm rings in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence, 10 women with genuine stress incontinence were studied. Patients underwent urodynamic evaluation and perineal pad testing before and after fitted diaphragm rings were in place. Patients kept symptom diaries for 1 week without the ring and then for 1 week with the ring. They also gave an overall subjective evaluation of their experience. Urodynamic findings were essentially unchanged by wearing diaphragm rings. Trends toward improvement were observed in the results of pad tests and sy
