[CT findings of watershed infarction; comparison of 123I-IMP SPECT and IV-DSA].

A watershed infarction is a specific type of a cerebral infarction. This occurs at the border zone between major cerebral arteries. Its CT findings are characteristic as a wedge shaped low density appearing either in the superior frontal region (watershed between anterior and middle and posterior cerebral artery), and always involving the deep white matter onto the ventricle wall. Even though the CT feature is small, a patient, without exception, suffers from neurologic deficit. We studied four cases of a watershed infarction on X-ray CT and compared with 123I-IMP SPECT. DSA was also made to d

[A case of progeria syndrome with cerebral infarction].

Cerebrovascular involvement is rare in progeria syndrome (Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome). A patient with progeria syndrome, who developed cerebral infarction, was reported. At 7 years of age, she suffered from right hemiplegia and transient ischemic attacks. X-ray CT showed multiple low density lesions in left frontal and parieto-occipital areas, which were enhanced with a contrast medium. Cerebral angiography demonstrated complete occlusion of left carotid artery and narrowing of vertebral artery. Brain imaging using 123I-N-isopropyl-p-iodoamphetamine (123I-IMP SPECT), which expressed regional

Brain perfusion defect size in SPECT predicts outcome in cerebral infarction.

The results of previous reports on the usefulness of brain perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in predicting the outcome of patients with acute cerebral infarction are conflicting. We therefore studied brain perfusion in 64 patients with a single supratentorial infarction. Contradictory to previous results the perfusion defect volume estimated from transversal and coronal slices correlated significantly with both presenting clinical findings and outcome. Although the clinical status at admission also correlated well with outcome, there was a subgroup of patients in whi

Mismatch between iodine-123 IMP and technetium-99m HM-PAO brain perfusion imaging in a patient with meningioma.

The discrepancy between three methods for cerebral perfusion imagings in the case of a man with meningioma is presented. Imaging with N-isopropyl-P-[I-123] iodoamphetamine (IMP) showed no activity in the tumor. Imaging with Tc-99m hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HM-PAO) and the local cerebral blood flow (LCBF) image with Xe-133 inhalation showed high tumor activity. IMP is a more accurate method for imaging the brain tissue blood flow.

Regional cerebral function and blood flow: complementary single photon emission computed tomography of the brain using xenon-133 and [123I]iodoamphetamine.

Regional cerebral function and blood flow can be imaged using isopropyl[123I]iodoamphetamine (IMP), or 133Xe (DSPECT), respectively. Both of these essentially non-invasive, quantitative, methods are suitable for many nuclear medicine laboratories. This study assessed the in vivo information about intracerebral disease provided by IMP and DSPECT techniques to determine the optimal diagnostic use of these modalities. Single photon emission computed tomograms of 53 subjects were acquired using similar displays for IMP and DSPECT data. Lobar tracer distributions were graded by three experienced ob

[Relationship between extent of brain hypoperfused area and functional outcome in patients with a small subcortical infarction: evaluation with X-ray CT, 123I-IMP cerebral perfusion SPECT and cerebral angiography].

We performed 123I-IMP single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in 43 patients who had a small infarction (less than 2 cm) in subcortical area and who were less than 1 month after onset of stroke. Hypoperfused area of brain was qualitatively assessed and was compared with functional outcome at 6-month after the stroke and the cerebral angiogram. Functional outcome was poorer in patients who had wider hypoperfused area in brain (chi 2 = 29.3; p less than 0.001). The extent of brain hypoperfused area showed a positive correlation with the degree of stenosis in the extracranial and/or in

Diagnosis of dementia with Lewy bodies: can 123I-IMP and 123I-MIBG scintigraphy yield new core features?

OBJECTIVE: Since the clinical symptoms of different types of dementia frequently overlap, especially in the earlier stages at onset, it is difficult to distinguish dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) from other neurodegenerative dementias based on their clinical manifestations alone. Nuclear medicine imaging has been reported as a high-value index for the objective evaluation and diagnosis of DLB. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether nuclear medicine imaging findings may yield core features to be added to the diagnosis of DLB. METHODS: We enrolled 332 patients with suspected DLB. Development of an H(2)(15)O steady-state method combining a bolus and slow increasing injection with a multiprogramming syringe pump.

An (15)O-labeled water (H(2)(15)O) steady-state method for quantitative measurement of cerebral blood flow (CBF), which is less stressful to small animals with a few point blood sampling, was developed. After a simulation using a dose meter to achieve stable H(2)(15)O radioactivity in the blood with a multiprogramming syringe pump programmed for slowly increasing injection volume, 10 rats were studied with the injection method. Arterial blood was sampled every minute during 6-minute positron emission tomography (PET) scans. After the PET scan, N-isopropyl-p-[(125)I]-iodoamphetamine ((125)I-IMP

Usefulness of the frontal lobe bottom and cerebellum tuber vermis line as an alternative clue to set the axial angle parallel to the AC-PC line in I-123 IMP SPECT imaging: a retrospective study.

We aimed to investigate whether the frontal lobe bottom and cerebellum tuber vermis (FLB-CTV) line on brain perfusion scintigraphy, using iodine-123 isopropyl iodoamphetamine single photon emission computed tomography (I-123 IMP SPECT) images, is useful to determine an axial angle parallel to the anterior commissure-posterior commissure (AC-PC) line. We measured the angular differences between the AC-PC line and the FLB-CTV line on midsagittal brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of 100 patients. We also evaluated the angular differences of the FLB-CTV line between the IMP SPECT images
