Intravascular fasciitis involving the external jugular vein and subclavian vein: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Intravascular fasciitis (IVF) is a rare nodular fasciitis that often involves the layers and lumens of blood vessels; therefore, it is easily misdiagnosed as a malignant tumor with invasion into blood vessels. CASE SUMMARY: A 13-year-old boy was admitted due to a mass on the left side of his neck. Duplex ultrasonography revealed a circular solid hypoechoic mass in the external jugular vein, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an enhanced longitudinal mass-like lesion in the left supraclavicular fossa. Surgical treatment was arranged and completed, histopathological analysis sh

Thrombosis in an Internal Jugular Vein and an Upper Limb Deep Vein Treated with Edoxaban.

A 45-year-old man complained of swelling of the left side of his neck and left upper limb. Ultrasonography and enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed thrombosis of the left internal jugular, subclavian, and brachiocephalic vein. Based on various examinations, the patient was diagnosed with idiopathic venous thrombosis early in his clinical course. There were no findings to suggest malignancy or abnormal coagulability. However, two months after the start of treatment, the patient was diagnosed with gastric cancer. Despite the presence of Trousseau syndrome, treatment with edoxaban (an oral

An interesting clinical case: variant of the cephalic vein emptying into the internal jugular vein.

This case report describes a 45-year-old patient who was referred to our center for surgical creation of long-term vascular access. Angiographic mapping revealed the left cephalic vein draining directly into the internal jugular vein rather than the axillary vein. The patient was scheduled for an ulnar artery to cephalic vein fistula.

Is jugular bulb stenosis in vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation associated with bony remodeling of the jugular foramina?

OBJECTIVE The etiology of jugular bulb stenosis (JBS) or occlusion in the context of vein of Galen aneurysmal malformations (VGAMs) is unknown. It can lead to decompensation of a lesion that was previously clinically stable. The aim of this study was to describe the natural history of JBS or occlusion in VGAM and to determine whether there is an association with bony remodeling of the jugular foramina. METHODS The authors identified all cases of JBS greater than 70% bilaterally involving patients seen at The Hospital for Sick Children between January 2007 and June 2014. The foramen diameters w

[Bilateral agenesis of the internal jugular veins : Case report of an extremely rare anomaly].

We report the case of a 64-year-old female patient with an unclear cervical paraesophageal space-occupying mass. During surgical exploration of the neck to clarify the histopathological dignity, an arteriovenous malformation was suspected. However, contrary to expectations, postoperative catheter angiography revealed bilateral agenesis of the internal jugular vein. Several cases of unilateral agenesis of the internal jugular vein have been described in the literature, but to the best of our knowledge, no bilateral case has been reported previously.

A Rare Anastomosis Between the Internal and the External Jugular Veins: A Case Report.

Usually, the external jugular vein (EJV) is located superficially over the sternocleidomastoid muscle and joins the subclavian vein or the venous angle. The internal jugular vein (IJV) lies deeply in close relation with the common carotid artery and vagus nerve, enveloped by the carotid sheath. Normally, there is no direct connection between those vessels. During a routine neck dissection, we found a rare anastomosis between IJV and EJV. The anastomosis was localized on the level of the cricoid cartilage. It was approximately 1 cm long, with the diameter of the lumen being 0.3 cm. There was no

Early-onset preeclampsia is characterised by an increased vascular tone in internal jugular veins.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate Doppler characteristics of maternal internal jugular veins in uncomplicated pregnancies vs. those affected by hypertensive disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Venous pulse transit time and venous impedance index were measured at three different locations (right proximal, right distal, left proximal) of internal jugular veins according to a standardised combined Doppler-Electrocardiogram protocol in five different groups of pregnant women: uncomplicated pregnancy, early-onset preeclampsia, late-onset preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, and normotensiv

Comparison of saphenous versus jugular veins for central venous access in children with malignancy.

A retrospective analysis was carried out to compare the performance and complications of central catheters inserted into either the saphenous (27) or jugular (52) veins. The saphenous route may be preferred in certain circumstances including extensive mediastinal pathology, prior neck surgery, previous catheter(s), and cosmetic reasons. There was no difference in complications (local or systemic catheter-related infections, catheter occlusions, or venous thrombosis). The incidence of catheter removal due to complications was also not different between sites. Hence, the saphenous route can prov

Bilateral vocal cord paralysis. A complication of percutaneous cannulation of the internal jugular veins.

A severe complication resulted from internal jugular cannulation. An obese patient had hematomas after bilateral attempts. The first cannulation (on the right) was successful after many tries; the second (on the left) was not. The patient was hoarse after the first attempt; more so and dyspneic after the second. Laryngoscopic examination showed paralysis of the vocal cords. Tracheostomy was done. Two weeks later, the cords were seen to move normally. The tracheostomy was removed, and recovery was uneventful.

Comparison of Inflammatory Cytokine Levels in Hepatic and Jugular Veins of Patients with Cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation with elevated inflammatory cytokines is a hallmark in patients with cirrhosis and the main driver of decompensation. There is insufficient data on whether inflammatory cytokine levels differ between hepatic and jugular veins, which may have implications for further immunological studies. METHODS: Blood from the hepatic and jugular veins of 40 patients with cirrhosis was collected during hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurements. Serum levels of 13 inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, Int-α2, Int-γ, TNF-α, MCP-1, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70, IL-17A, IL-18

Preoperative ultrasonographic findings of internal jugular veins and carotid arteries in kidney transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis via the internal jugular vein (IJV) has been widely used for patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, as they have a higher risk of arterial diseases. We investigated the ultrasonographic findings of the IJV and carotid artery (CA) in recipients of kidney transplantation (KT) and identified factors influencing IJV/CA abnormalities. METHODS: We enrolled 120 adult KT recipients. Patients in group A (n = 57) had a history of IJV hemodialysis, while those in group B (n = 63) were not yet on dialysis or undergoing dialysis methods not involving the IJV. The d

Surgically managed paediatric external jugular vein pseudoaneurysm.

Aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms predominantly affect the high-pressure arterial system; venous manifestations are exceedingly rare. While the internal jugular vein is the most common cervical site-typically following catheterisation-external jugular vein (EJV) pseudoaneurysms are far less common. Although usually managed conservatively, surgery may be indicated in select cases.A preteen girl presented with a 3-month history of a painless, compressible, right-sided neck mass that enlarged during the Valsalva manoeuvre. There was no history of trauma.Sonographic evaluation demonstrated focal EJV d

Intravascular lipoma of the left jugular subclavian vein confluence.

Lipomas are benign tumors composed of mature adipocytes; however, their occurrence within the venous system is rare. Intravascular lipomas are often discovered incidentally, although larger lesions may cause symptoms of venous obstruction or thrombosis. Their origin remains uncertain, with hypotheses suggesting either intraluminal or perivascular development. Treatment is individualized, with surgical excision indicated for symptomatic or obstructive cases. We present the case of a 58-year-old man with left-sided neck swelling found to have an intraluminal lipomatous mass at the junction of th

Internal Jugular Vein Thrombosis: A Bicentric Cohort Study.

Background: Internal jugular vein thrombosis (IJVT) is a rare but serious complication in hospitalized patients, often associated with central venous access devices (CVADs). The primary objective of the study was to analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with newly diagnosed IJVT, in particular to evaluate mortality, development of pulmonary embolism and incidence of bleeding at 30 days from diagnosis. Secondly, a sub-analysis was performed between patients with device-related and non-device-related thrombosis. Methods: Prospective study on adult inpatients diagnosed with IJVT from J
