A vascular mass localized in the face and the neck was displayed by ultrasonography in a 38-week-old male fetus. At birth, the mass was bulky and purplish. The newborn breathed spontaneously but with severe desaturation. During laryngoscopy, we observed an obstruction of the larynx with a left-shift caused by the hemorrhagic mass. Blood analysis revealed anemia, severe thrombocytopenia, and coagulation disorders. The diagnosis of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) complicated by a Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon (KMP) was put forward and treatment with propranolol, corticoids, and vincristine w

Kapossiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) of the paranasal sins (PNS) is a rare cause of recurrent epistaxis. To date, only two cases of PNS KHE have been reported in the literature, both occurring in the pediatric population. The case presented here appears to be the first case of PNS KHE occurring in an adult. A 46-year-old white female presented with progressively worsening unilateral recurrent epistaxis. Diagnostic histopathology confirmed it to be KHE. After a detailed workup, the tumor was completely excised en bloc (medial maxillectomy; anterior and posterior ethmoidectomy) via a lateral-r

Kaposiform haemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare vascular tumour, predominantly of infancy and early childhood, that has a close association with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome. Despite benign histology, this tumour frequently behaves aggressively, causing significant morbidity and mortality as a result of the compression and invasion of surrounding structures as well as from associated haematological and lymphoproliferative syndromes. There is a need for a high index of suspicion when presented with large, enlarging or abnormal vascular lesions in infancy and, less commonly, in adulthood. An early

OBJECTIVE: To study the ultrasonic characteristics of fetal cutaneous hemangioma and the association with perinatal outcomes.
METHODS: Five fetuses with cutaneous hemangioma were detected by gray-scale and color Doppler ultrasound, compared with the result of pathology and hematology examinations after birth.
RESULTS: Of the 5 cases diagnosed by ultrasound, 3 had arteriovenous fistulas. In these 3 cases two fetuses developed high-output cardiac failure, and one developed cardiac insufficiency and thrombocytopenia. Finally one fetus was induced, one fetus died in the uterus and one neonate su

AIMS: Management of kaposiform haemangioendotheliomas (KHE) with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon is challenging in young infants who are subjected to developmental pharmacokinetic changes. Sirolimus, sometimes combined with corticosteroids, can be used as an effective treatment of KHE. Simultaneously, toxicities such as interstitial pneumonitis related to the use of sirolimus may be fatal. As infants have a very low CYP3-enzyme expression at birth, which rises during ageing, we hypothesize that a reduced metabolization of sirolimus might lead to high sirolimus serum levels and low dose may be suff

BACKGROUND: Kaposiform haemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a tumor of intermediate malignant potential derived from vascular endothelial cells. Due to rarity of head neck KHE (HN-KHE) this comprehensive review aims to compile, analyze and present details to develop a consensus and augment available literature on HN-KHE.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed on PUBMED/MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and Science Citation Index for HN-KHE using MeSH words. Statistical analysis was performed using a variety of tests.
RESULTS: Common sites of involvement were neck 41.5%, face

Primary splenic angiosarcoma is an extremely agressive and rare neoplasm. Manifestations as bone marrow invasion and coagulation disorders have been reported isolatedly. A 26 years-old woman presented with abdominal pain; several anemia and thrombocytopenia associated to leukoerythroblastic reaction were found in the laboratory. Consumpion coagulopathy signs and microangiopathy as schistocytes, prolonged prothrombine time, decreased fibrinogen and increased D dimer were also present. Imaging findings included a lobulated, enlarged spleen, with spontanously hyperdense areas, and heterogeneous n

BACKGROUND: Cardiac haemangiomas are extremely rare tumours with equivocal surgical outcomes. Haemangiomas appearing on other sites of the body have been successfully treated with oral propranolol. To the best of our knowledge, such treatment has not been tried to date for cardiac location of haemangiomas.
CASE SUMMARY: We report two cases of neonatal cardiac haemangiomas, and we describe their presentation and characteristics, as well as how these were successfully treated with oral propranolol, with complete regression of the tumours within the 1st year of life.
DISCUSSION: Despite the rar

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare, aggressive vascular proliferation in children that is clinically and histologically distinct from hemangioma of infancy. It is often complicated with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome. The authors describe a 2-month-old girl who developed a rapidly enlarging deep subcutaneous solid tumor in the left axilla. The tumor size was about 10x7 cm and there was no skin change over the mass. The results of laboratory tests were significant for a moderate anemia (7.0 g/dL) and a profound thrombocytopenia (3x10/L). The preoperative radiologic findings were suspicious fo

Haemangiomas can be indicators or clue signs for serious syndromes. Although less well known than those related to vascular malformations, there are some syndromes of important diagnostic value that are associated with haemangomias. Early recognition of problematic haemangiomas, together with a prompt intervention, may help to minimise their future morbidity. Neonatal haemangiomas warrant a special follow-up, since their growth pattern might be unpredictable at such an early age. Several clinical presentations are relevant because of their risk of syndromic association: cervicofacial haemangio

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare vascular tumor that typically presents in infancy and may be associated with the Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon (KMP). We present a challenging case of multifocal KHE on the leg of an infant, initially suspected at birth to be a reticulate port wine birthmark. Skin biopsy and imaging supported the rare diagnosis of multifocal KHE. Complicated by KMP, he was started on sirolimus monotherapy with significant improvement in his widespread disease.

Some vascular anomalies can present with challenging hematologic aberrations. Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) may be complicated with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon (KMP) and stagnant blood flow in slow-flow malformations can promote activation and consumption of coagulation factors, which results in bleeding and clotting known as localized intravascular coagulopathy (LIC). These patients can experience significant morbidity secondary to pain due to thrombosis and are at higher risk of hematologic complications during surgical procedures. No standard of care has been established to prevent

OBJECTIVES: There are no cohort studies of chronic lymphedema in patients with kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE). We sought to characterize the incidence, clinical features, risk factors and management of chronic lymphedema in patients with KHE.
METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective analysis of patients who had a minimum of 3 years of follow-up after the onset of KHE and/or Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon (KMP). Clinical features were reviewed to determine the possible cause of chronic lymphedema. The degree of lymphedema, risk factors and management strategies were analyzed.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare vascular tumor in children, which can be accompanied by life-threatening thrombocytopenia, referred to as Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon (KMP). The mTOR inhibitor sirolimus is emerging as targeted therapy in KHE. As the sirolimus effect on KHE occurs only after several weeks, we aimed to evaluate whether additional transarterial embolization is of benefit for children with KHE and KMP. Seventeen patients with KHE and KMP acquired from 11 hospitals in Germany were retrospectively divided into two cohorts. Children being treated with adjunct transarte

We report the case of a male infant born at term with kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) of the right forearm and coagulopathy. Our case was unusual as it involuted leaving subcutaneous atrophy and prominent veins, which are more commonly observed in rapidly involuting congenital hemangioma. At 3 years of age, the child developed recurrent superficial thrombophlebitis localized to the area where the KHE had regressed. Subsequently, he developed necrotizing fasciitis and thrombotic veins in the same location and group A streptococcal septic shock.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a vascular tumor that commonly presents as a cutaneous mass, is observed in children, and is associated with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. Herein we report a case of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma with chest wall deformity in an adult who did not show the Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon or cutaneous lesions. To our knowledge, this is the first case of asymptomatic kaposiform hemangioendothelioma arising from the pleura and deforming the chest wall. The patient was treated with tumor excision and chest wall reconstruction.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare locally aggressive vascular neoplasm characterized by infiltrating nodules and sheets of spindle cells, and unmistakable resemblance to Kaposi's sarcoma. KHE occurs mainly in newborns and infants and presents most commonly in the skin, deep soft tissue, and bone. We report a case of KHE in a 36-year-old female who presented with a spleen mass and underwent splenectomy. Macroscopic examination revealed a large, dark-red, firm mass in the spleen. Histologically, the tumor consisted of irregular, infiltrating nodules of densely packed spindle-shaped
