Prior to the Ebola virus disease outbreak in Liberia, the laboratory system was duplicative, fragmented and minimally coordinated. The National Reference Laboratory was conceptualised to address the existing challenges by promoting the implementation of effective and sustainable laboratory services in Liberia. However, in a resource-limited environment such as Liberia, progress regarding the rebuilding of the health system can be relatively slow, while efforts to sustain the transient gains remain a key challenge for the Ministry of Health. In this paper, we describe the pre-Ebola virus diseas

Sixty-three virus isolates were obtained by inoculation of Vero cells with sera from 50 hospital in-patients in Liberia with acute febrile illnesses. 57 of the isolates were presumptively identified as Lassa virus (LV) by direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) staining of inoculated Vero cells. These, and six additional isolates obtained only by titration of supernatant fluids from inoculated Vero cells, were definitively identified as LV in a neutralization test. Two additional LV isolates were obtained from a patient's sera from Nigeria. By cross-neutralization tests, the Nigerian LV strains were

AIM: To assess the impact on perinatal mortality and morbidity of involving mothers in partnership with maternity staff in monitoring their unborn babies.
METHODS: Mothers attending 4 hospitals in Liberia consented and were trained to use doppler ultrasound probes to monitor for abnormalities or changes in fetal heart rates during labour. A range of 120 to 160 beats per minute was chosen as normal. Intermittent auscultation was undertaken sequentially, immediately following the end of every uterine contraction.
RESULTS: One hundred eleven intrauterine fetal deaths occurred before mothers arr

Scabies is a parasitic infestation with high global burden. Mass drug administrations (MDAs) are recommended for communities with a scabies prevalence of >10%. Quantitative analyses are needed to demonstrate the likely effectiveness of MDA recommendations. In this study, we developed an agent-based model of scabies transmission calibrated to demographic and epidemiological data from Monrovia. We used this model to compare the effectiveness of MDA scenarios for achieving scabies elimination and reducing scabies burden, as measured by time until recrudescence following delivery of an MDA and dis

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global threat to women's health and may be elevated among those exposed to traumatic events in post-conflict settings, such as Liberia. The purpose of this study was to examine potential mediators between lifetime exposure to traumatic events (i.e., war-related trauma, community violence) with recent experiences of IPV among 183 young, pregnant women in Monrovia, Liberia. Hypothesized mediators included mental health (depression, posttraumatic stress symptoms), insecure attachment style (anxious and avoidant attachment), and attitudes indicative of norms of

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of failed pregnancy and menstrual irregularities among Liberian women who had survived Ebola virus disease (EVD) and to identify host-specific and disease-specific factors associated with these outcomes.
METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted between August 10, 2016, and February 7, 2017. The study population comprised 111 women aged 18-45 years who had survived EVD and were enrolled in the Longitudinal Liberian Ebola Survivor study based at the Eternal Love Winning Africa Hospital, Monrovia, Liberia. Self-reported data on outco

West Africa is experiencing its first epidemic of Ebola virus disease (Ebola). As of February 9, Liberia has reported 8,864 Ebola cases, of which 3,147 were laboratory-confirmed. Beginning in August 2014, the Liberia Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW), supported by CDC, the World Health Organization (WHO), and others, began systematically investigating and responding to Ebola outbreaks in remote areas. Because many of these areas lacked mobile telephone service, easy road access, and basic infrastructure, flexible and targeted interventions often were required. Development of a nati

Background: The Basic Emergency Care (BEC) course was developed to improve the management of acute illness and injury in resource-limited settings. Although BEC materials are freely available, formal instructor credentialing requires time and resources that may limit rapid implementation. In remote areas, such as Maryland County, Liberia, innovative approaches to BEC training are needed. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a BEC course delivered by a mixed instructor team consisting of credentialed and non-credentialed facilitators in improving emergency care knowledge and self-efficac

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of ventilation interventions in naturally ventilated hospitals in Liberia.
DESIGN: Difference-in-differences analysis of pre- and post-air changes per hour of intervention and control spaces.
SETTING: Hospitals in Bong and Montserrado Counties, Liberia.
PARTICIPANTS: Seventy patient care spaces were evaluated at baseline. Six spaces underwent physical intervention modifications, while 2 spaces were assessed for indirect effects and 2 others used as controls. Healthcare workers were interviewed to assess ventilation knowledge and acc

The severity of the 2014-15 West African Ebola epidemic in Liberia was coupled with widespread misunderstanding of the virus among citizens and the proliferation of rumours. Rumour control during outbreaks is imperative to reduce the public's fears about a disease. In Liberia, a tracker system was developed to detect rumours as quickly as possible through SMS (short message service) text messaging. This study focused on assessing rumour circulation in newspapers and on radio and rumour control over time. It relied on a content analysis of SMS messages from the 'DeySay' tracker, print and audio

UNLABELLED: We report a case of spontaneous rare birth deformity. A case of Amelia and Phocomelia in a neonate. Amelia is a rare congenital disorder, even more so, is the combined amelia and phocomelia in a neonate. True Phocomelia was defined as the total absence of the intermediate segments of the limb. With the hand or foot (normal, almost normal, or malformed), directly attached to the trunk. The common aetiological association with phocomelia is from the use of thalidomide and genetic inheritance, as an autosomal recessive trait, involving chromosome 8. Isolated amelia is not generally co

INTRODUCTION: Access to Liberia's health system is reliant on out-of-pocket (OOP) health expenditures which may prevent people from seeking care or result in catastrophic health expenditure (CHE). CHE and impoverishment due to OOP, which are used by the World Bank and World Health Organization as the sole measures of financial risk protection, are limited: they do not consider households who, following a health shock, do not incur expenditure because they cannot access the healthcare services they need (i.e., households forgoing healthcare (HFH) services). This paper attempts to overcome this

BACKGROUND: The Eternal Love Winning Africa (ELWA) Clinic was the first clinic to provide free, comprehensive care to Ebola virus disease (EVD) survivors in Liberia. The objectives of this analysis were to describe the demographics and symptoms of EVD survivors at ELWA from January 2015 through March 2017 and to identify risk factors for development of sequelae.
METHODS: Patients' demographic and clinical information was collected by chart review in June 2016 and March 2017. Associations with clinical sequelae were analyzed using the chi-square test, t test, and multivariate logistic regressi

A cornerstone of effective disaster management is that response should always begin and end at the local level (1). The response to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in Liberia, West Africa, was a combination of independent efforts by many nations and organizations. Many of these independent efforts ignored or were not able to work with the local levels of emergency management in Liberia. This oversight occurred because of the Liberian's mistrust of both their government and foreign aid groups, as well as the lack of cultural competency demonstrated by the aid groups. The health-care and

BACKGROUND: There are increasing efforts and attention focused on the delivery of mental health services in primary care in low resource settings (e.g., mental health Gap Action Programme, mhGAP). However, less attention is devoted to systematic approaches that identify and address barriers to the development and uptake of mental health services within primary care in low-resource settings. Our objective was to prepare for optimal uptake by identifying barriers in rural Liberia. The country's need for mental health services is compounded by a 14-year history of political violence and the large

In the current study, we have assessed the distribution of black fly vectors and the occurrence of onchocerciasis among residents of the Firestone Rubber Plantation (FRP) in Liberia. The degree of endemicity of onchocerciasis on the FRP is correlated with the breeding of Simulium yahense on the Du River and Simulium soubrense on the Farmington River, as well as with the feeding behavior of these black fly vectors. S. yahense is highly anthropophilic and highly susceptible to Onchocerca volvulus, thus, it is apparently the primary vector of O. volvulus on the plantation. S. soubrense is predomi

Sera collected 13 years ago from 592 residents of the Republic of Liberia have been tested for antibodies to LAV polypeptides. 7 sera were positive by ELISA using two commercially available test kits whereas immunoblotting did not confirm antibodies specific for LAV.

Haemoglobin components in 21 Liberians with Hb S beta +-thalassaemia and four with Hb C beta +-thalassaemia were measured to classify the forms of beta +-thalassaemia present in the population. In 20 Hb S and all Hb C beta +-thalassaemics the data were consistent with the interaction of these variants with the mild type 2 (Negro) form of beta +-thalassaemia. The data available were insufficient to classify the remaining case, a young child. It was concluded that the clinically more severe type of beta +-thalassaemia giving Hb A levels of 5 to 15% in compound heterozygotes is probably uncommon
