The lateral hypothalamus, and various sites within the limbic system and frontal lobe of the rhesus monkey brain were electrically stimulated using chronically implanted electrodes. A considerble increase in plasma aldosterone levels was observed after stimulation of the lateral hypothalamic area, certain localized sites in the cingulate area, and lower medial parts of the frontal lobe. Inactive sites included most of the amygdala, hippocampus, and basal ganglia, together with other areas within the frontal lobe and cingulate gyrus. Stimulation of all active areas was followed by an increase i

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (i.e., autism and Asperger syndrome) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, although its etiology is still unclear. Neuroimaging studies have attempted to identify the neurobiological basis of ASD. This article reviews recent progress in ASD research using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and positron emission tomography (PET). MRI studies documented structural and functional abnormalities in cerebella, the frontal lobes, the temporal lobes, and limbic systems of individuals with ASD. SPECT and PET studies suggested

BACKGROUND: Lipoproteinosis is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by a mutation in a gene (ECM1) on chromosome 1q21. Alterations of membrane and vessels in the dermal-epidermal junction represent the pathologic background of the disease. Calcification in the temporal lobes and hippocampi are common and may be associated with epileptic seizures.
PATIENT DESCRIPTION: We describe a 7-year-old girl with lipoproteinosis who presented with hoarseness, typical skin lesions, and seizures.
RESULTS: Video electroencephalography demonstrated focal temporal lobe seizures. Intelligence quotient w

The human insular cortex, or the lobus insularis, is considered the developmentally most primitive lobe of the telencephalon. Covered by an overlying cortical lid, the insula has functions that are distinct from yet related to those of the adjacent temporal lobe and deep limbic structures. In the first part of this paper the authors outline the development of the human insula, including the cellular heterogeneity comprising the various parts of the insular lobe. Using the understanding gained from the development of the insula they then address implications of insular development for cortical

Rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by complex motor activity associated with dreaming during REM sleep. RBD may be idiopathic or associated with various neurological diseases involving the brainstem. The association of RBD and limbic system impairment was unclear. We report a 46-year-old man with acute aseptic limbic encephalitis in association with RBD. The patient presented with subacute onset of anterograde/retrograde amnesia and persistent fever. Abnormal nocturnal behavior during sleep consisted of waving hands to fight and kicking legs. B

OBJECTIVES: As biochemical and functional abnormalities often precede structural changes in disease, fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET) may allow early detection of cerebral involvement in neuropsychiatric lupus. This study evaluated the correlation between cerebral glucose metabolism, assessed by fluorodeoxyglucose PET, and cognitive impairment in young adults with childhood-onset systemic lupus.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients with childhood-onset systemic lupus underwent clinical and neuropsychological assessment, followed by fluorodeoxyglucose PET brain imaging

Various neuropathologies produce hyperintense signals on T2-weighted or fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequences of the temporal lobes. Recognition of the distribution pattern and associated findings may narrow the spectrum of differential diagnoses or suggest a specific disease. This pictorial essay aims to illustrate the relatively common diseases that affect the temporal lobe, such as herpes simplex encephalitis, neurosyphilis, limbic encephalitis, postictal edema, neoplasia, and multiple sclerosis, as well as those that are less common, such as myotonic dystrophy type 1, CADASIL, and

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a good tool for researchers to understand the biological mechanisms and pathophysiology of the brain due to the translational characteristics of MRI methods. For the psychiatric illness, this kind of mental disorders usually have minor alterations when compared to traditional neurological disorders. Therefore the functional study, such as functional connectivity, would play a significant role for understanding the pathophysiology of mental disorders. This chapter would focus on the discussion of task MRI-based functional network studies in anxiety. For socia

Neuroanatomical correlates of apathy and disinhibition, behavioral abnormalities in behavioral variant Frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) remain unclear. In this study 45 participants (25 bvFTD patients and 20 controls) provided data on clinical, neuropsychological, behavioral (on Frontal Systems Behavior (FrSBe) Scale), cortical volume (on voxel-based morphometry (VBM)) and tract based spatial fractional anisotropy ((FA) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), allowing examination of the neural correlates of apathy and disinhibition. The patients with bvFTD had predominant grey matter loss and corr

Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS) are typically associated with malignant neoplasms. The anti-Yo antibody is classically linked to paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration; its coexistence with limbic encephalitis is extremely rare. We report the first case of anti-Yo–positive limbic encephalitis associated with a benign thyroid–parathyroid adenoma. A 59-year-old male presented with epileptic seizures, left upper limb weakness, dysarthria, and confusion. Serum anti-Yo antibody was positive. Cranial MRI revealed diffusion restriction in the cerebellar hemispheres and middle cerebellar p

A 23-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of consciousness disturbance and convulsion, preceded by high fever, headache and erythema multiforme. Her brain magnetic resonance images showed hyperintense lesions in the left medial temporal lobe and the left pulvinar nucleus of the thalamus on fluid attenuated inversion recovery images. Analysis of cerebrospinal fluid showed mild pleocytosis, but DNA of herpes simplex or herpes type 6 viruses was negative on PCR. Laboratory investigations showed the presence of anti-nuclear antibodies, anti-RNP antibodies and lupus anticoagulant. Th

The neural basis of psychosis is yet to be fully elucidated. In this review the contribution of schizophrenia-like psychosis of epilepsy, delusional misidentification syndromes and psychotic phenomena, such as auditory and visual hallucinations, to our understanding of the neural basis of psychosis is examined. Schizophrenia-like psychosis of epilepsy is associated with seizures originating from the limbic structures. Reduced seizure frequency, left-sided electrical foci, and neurodevelopmental lesions manifesting as cortical dysgenesis are known to influence the likelihood of developing schiz

OBJECTIVE: To interrogate hippocampal morphology and structural co-variance patterns in migraine patients and to investigate whether structural co-variance patterns relate to migraine disease characteristics.
BACKGROUND: Migraine is associated with structural alterations in widespread cortical and subcortical regions associated with the sensory, cognitive, and affective components of pain processing. Recent studies have shown that migraine patients have differences in hippocampal structure and function relative to healthy control subjects, but whether hippocampal structure relates to disease

OBJECTIVE: Chemotherapy-related brain impairments and changes can occur in patients with lung cancer after platinum chemotherapy and have a substantial impact on survivors' quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the brain neuropathological alterations and response mechanisms to provide a theoretical basis for rehabilitation strategies. This study aimed to investigate the related brain morphological changes and clarified their correlation with clinical and pathological indicators in patients with lung cancer after platinum chemotherapy.
METHODS: Overall, 28 patients with che

BACKGROUND: The underlying symptomatology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be viewed as an impairment in both cognitive and behavioral inhibition, regarding difficult inhibition of obsessions and behavioral compulsions. Converging results from neuroimaging and electroencephalographic (EEG) studies have identified changes in activities throughout the medial frontal and orbital cortex and subcortical structures supporting the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit model of OCD. This study aimed to elucidate the electrophysiological changes induced by autobiographical and general anxi

Ictal bruxism (IB) is a rare oro-alimentary automatism in focal seizures. We report a series of six patients with IB in drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) treated subsequently with temporal lobectomy. All patients had ictal teeth grinding with semiological features, suggestive of temporal lobe origin. Ictal electroencephalogram (EEG) onset showed artifacts corresponding to bruxism; one patient had a "checkerboard" pattern of EEG artifacts corresponding with lateral jaw movements. Five patients had a lesion in the mesial temporal lobe, while one patient had a neocortical temporal lobe

This study examined relations of mesiotemporal lobe tissue volumes with neuropsychological (NP) functions in a sample of patients with first episode schizophrenia. Three contiguous compartments of the mesiotemporal lobe were measured on magnetic resonance images, comprising primarily amygdaloid, anterior hippocampal, and posterior hippocampal tissue volumes. NP measures were derived from a comprehensive battery. Decreased volume selectively in the anterior hippocampal formation was associated with lower scores on measures of executive and motor functions usually considered sensitive to the int

We describe a 61-year-old patient with clinical evidence of limbic encephalitis who improved with anticonvulsant treatment only, that is, without the use of immunosuppressive agents. Three years following occurrence of anosmia, increasing memory deficits, and emotional disturbances, he presented with new-onset temporal lobe epilepsy, with antibodies binding to neuronal voltage-gated potassium channels and bitemporal hypometabolism on FDG-PET scan; the MRI scan was normal. This is most likely a case of spontaneous remission, illustrating that immunosuppressive therapy might be suspended in mild

BACKGROUND: Episodic memory deficits occur in alcohol use disorder (AUD), but their anatomical substrates remain in question. Although persistent memory impairment is classically associated with limbic circuitry disruption, learning and retrieval of new information also relies on frontal systems. Despite AUD vulnerability of frontal lobe integrity, relations between frontal regions and memory processes have been under-appreciated.
METHODS: Participants included 91 AUD (49 with a drug diagnosis history) and 36 controls. Verbal and visual episodic memory scores were age- and education-corrected

This article presents a three-factor anatomical model of human idea generation and creative drive, focusing on interactions between the temporal lobes, frontal lobes, and limbic system. Evidence is drawn from functional imaging, drug studies, and lesion analysis. Temporal lobe changes, as in hypergraphia, often increase idea generation, sometimes at the expense of quality. Frontal lobe deficits may decrease idea generation, in part because of rigid judgments about an idea's worth. These phenomena are clearest in verbal creativity, and roughly parallel the pressured communication of temporal lo
