Simultaneous in situ synthesis and loading of magnetite for dye wastewater remediation: adsorption study and DFT calculations.

Synthesizing new materials for water treatment often involves resource- and energy-intensive processes to achieve the desired treatment performance. In this work, we propose for the first time a novel approach for the facile synthesis of a hybrid inorganic/organic adsorbent via in situ loading of magnetite nanoparticles with organic dyes commonly present in industrial wastewater, namely congo red (CR) and bromocresol green (BCG). The resulting dye-loaded magnetite was subsequently used to remove other dyes from synthetic wastewater, including methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO). Derivat

Dimeric magnetic dumbbell nanoparticles with selective immobilization of chromophores for improved tumor theranostics.

Recently, the development of dimeric nanoparticles has attracted much attention from researchers, since these materials make it possible to combine various properties and functions in one system. Dumbbell nanoparticles enable the integration of various components to achieve dual functionality, for example imaging and therapy. In our work, we showed that «dumbbell» type magnetite-gold dimeric nanoparticles could be used for combining Cy5 fluorophore and bacteriopheophorbide based photosensitizer for the joint use in fluorescent diagnostics and photodynamic therapy, allowing to avoid the FRET ef

[Blood detoxification using superparamagnetic nanoparticles (magnetic hemodialysis)].

UNLABELLED: The authors present an experimental study realized in order to simulate blood detoxification with the help of supermagnetic nanoparticles. The particles used are red oxide nanoparticles which are considered to be equivalent from a magnetic susceptibility and dynamic diameter point of view to the complex structures of magnetite nanoparticles. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Two types of custom HGMS matrices have been used--a threaded one and a micro-spheres one. For testing red oxide particles have been purposefully created to have a lower magnetic susceptibility than magnetite or iron-carbon

Engineered Magnetic-Functionalized Carbon Xerogels for Sustainable Arsenic Removal: Bridging Adsorption Efficiency with Regenerability.

This study developed iron-oxide-functionalized carbon xerogels for enhanced arsenic adsorption to mitigate global water contamination. The composites were synthesized by integrating magnetite nanoparticles (15-20 nm) into a resorcinol-formaldehyde matrix via sol-gel polycondensation, followed by controlled pyrolysis. Key parameters-magnetite/resorcinol ratios (0.03-0.07), carbonization conditions (temperature, heating rate, duration), and H2O2-induced surface modification-were optimized to maximize adsorption performance. Characterization (SEM/EDX, XRD, FTIR, BET, TEM) confirmed uniform magnet

In vitro analysis of iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticle mediated degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their antimicrobial activity.

To degrade anthracene, magnetite nanoparticles were produced using a simple co-precipitation process. The fabricated nanoparticles have been analyzed for structural and optical properties. XRD examination revealed that the produced Fe3O4 nanoparticles were cubic phase, having a mean crystallite dimension of 18.84 nm. DLS determined the hydrodynamic diameter of Fe3O4 nanoparticles to be 182 nm. UV-Vis research revealed that Fe3O4 nanoparticles absorb at 390 nm. A peak at 895 cm-1 in the FT-IR study indicated the metal-oxygen connection. The synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles demonstrated an effect

Particle size and aggregation effects on magnetite reactivity toward carbon tetrachloride.

Nanoparticulate magnetite is found in many natural and engineered environments. This study characterized the reactivity of this material toward carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Particle diameter plays an important role, with nominal (9 nm) magnetite suspensions exhibiting greater reactivity on both mass (k(m)) and surface area normalized (k(SA)) bases than (80 nm) magnetite suspensions. For the (9 nm) suspension, the aggregation state of the particles affects the measured km values. At 0.001 M ionic strength and pH 7, k(m) (=0.052-0.139 L g(-1) h(-1)) was as much as seven times larger than at 1 M

Surface modifications at the oxide/water interface: Implications for Cu binding, solution chemistry and chemical stability of iron oxide nanoparticles.

The oxidation of magnetite into maghemite and its coating by natural organic constituents are common changes that affect the reactivity of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) in aqueous environments. Certain ubiquitous compounds such as humic acids (HA) and phosphatidylcholine (PC), displaying a high affinity for both copper (Cu) and IONP, could play a critical role in the interactions involved between both compounds. The adsorption of Cu onto four different IONP was studied: magnetite nanoparticles (magnNP), maghemite NP (maghNP), HA- and PC-coated magnetite NP (HA-magnNP and PC-magnNP, respectiv

Formation of Iron (Hydr)Oxide Nanoparticles with a pH-Clock.

We demonstrate the autonomous synthesis of iron (hydr)oxide (green rust, magnetite, and lepidocrocite) nanoparticles by precipitating iron(II) ions using hydroxide ions generated in situ with the methylene glycol-sulfite (MGS) reaction, a pH-clock. We show that the nature of the products can be predetermined by tuning the initial iron(II) concentration.

High MR sensitive fluorescent magnetite nanocluster for stem cell tracking in ischemic mouse brain.

UNLABELLED: Stem cells have shown a great potential to treat diseases and injuries, including ischemic brain injury. However, developing agents for the long-term tracking of stem cells with few side effects is still challenging. Our aim is to develop a novel fluorescent-magnetite-nanocluster (FMNC) with high MRI sensitivity and to examine its application in the labeling and tracking of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). For this purpose, we developed FMNC by embedding individual magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) into a polystyrene scaffold coated with two layers of silica and a sandwiched layer of rhod

Simultaneous degradation of the anticancer drugs 5-fluorouracil and cyclophosphamide using a heterogeneous photo-Fenton process based on copper-containing magnetites (Fe3-xCuxO4).

The effect of substitution of iron by copper in the magnetite lattice was investigated in terms of the catalytic activity in the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process. The physicochemical properties of the Fe3-xCuxO4 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF), specific surface area measurements, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Copper-modified magnetite showed higher catalytic activity for H2O2 conversion to HO• (estimated using 7-hydroxycoumarin), compared to pristine magnetite (Fe3O4)

Graphene Derivative in Magnetically Recoverable Catalyst Determines Catalytic Properties in Transfer Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes to Anilines with 2-Propanol.

Here, we report transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes to aminoarenes using 2-propanol as a hydrogen source and Ag-containing magnetically recoverable catalysts based on partially reduced graphene oxide (pRGO) sheets. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data demonstrated that, during the one-pot catalyst synthesis, formation of magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) is accompanied by the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) to pRGO. The formation of Ag0 NPs on top of magnetite nanoparticles does not change the pRGO structure. At the same time, the catalyst structure is further modified du

Synergistic immunomodulatory effect in macrophages mediated by magnetic nanoparticles modified with miRNAs.

In this work, we describe the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles composed of a maghemite core (MNP) and three different coatings (dextran, D-MNP; carboxymethyldextran, CMD-MNP; and dimercaptosuccinic acid, DMSA-MNP). Their interactions with red blood cells, plasma proteins, and macrophages were also assessed. CMD-MNP was selected for its good biosafety profile and for promoting a pro-inflammatory response in macrophages, which was associated with the nature of the coating. Thus, we proposed a smart miRNA delivery system using CMD-MNP as a carrier for cancer immunotherapy applications. Particu
