IRF6, MSX1, TGFA, dental anomalies, and skeletal malocclusion.

OBJECTIVE: Verify the presence of association between four variables-transforming growth factor α (TGFA; C/T rs1523305), interferon regulatory factor 6 (IRF6; A/C rs2013162), muscle segment homeobox 1 (MSX1; A/G rs12532), and dental anomalies-with skeletal malocclusion by comparing these four variables with Angle Classes I, II, and III, and normal, hyperdivergent, and hypodivergent growth patterns. METHODS: A total of 505 orthodontic records of patients older than 8 years were evaluated. The sample consisted of 285 (56.4 per cent) females, 220 (43.6 per cent) males, 304 (60.2 per cent) Whites

Knowledge of malocclusion supports comprehensive dental hygiene care.

Occlusal assessments are often missed or neglected by dentists and dental hygienists. This short communication discusses how these assessments can be implemented through 4 planes of space: anterior-posterior/anteroposterior, vertical, transverse, and perimeter. Expanded occlusal knowledge can improve the referral process for early preventive care. A chairside guide has been defined for dental hygienists to conduct a systematic occlusal exam.

Fluctuating Dental Arch Asymmetry in Different Malocclusion Groups.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the degree of dental arch fluctuating asymmetry (FA) among patients with Class I, II, and III malocclusions. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The sample comprised randomly selected plaster casts of 131 patients: 39 Class I (19 males and 20 females), 57 Class II (23 males and 34 females), and 35 Class III (20 males and 15 females). Dental models were scanned and digitized using ATOS II SO. The measurements of the teeth and dental arches were taken using the ATOS viewer version 6.A.2 software. Six arch widths and five arch depths were measured. The FA was assessed as a composite inde

Treatment of Class III Malocclusion: Atypical Extraction Protocol.

The treatment of Angle Class III malocclusion is rather challenging, because the patient's growth pattern determines the success of long-term treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment are still highly discussed issues in orthodontic literature. This type of early intervention has been indicated more frequently in order to eliminate primary etiological factors and prevent an already present malocclusion from becoming severe. However, when a patient is diagnosed in adulthood, manipulation of the bone bases becomes extremely limited, as there is no longer any potential for growth. Treatments are r

Down syndrome: a risk factor for malocclusion severity?

The aims of the present study were to compare aspects related to malocclusion between individuals with Down syndrome (DS) and a control group, establish malocclusion severity, and identify determinant factors. A total of 120 individuals (60 with DS and 60 with no physical or mental impairment), were included in the study. Data were collected through interviews, analyses of the medical charts, and oral examinations. The criteria of the Dental Aesthetic Index were used for the diagnosis of malocclusion. Chi-square test (p ≤ 0.05) and multivariate logistic regression were used for comparisons bet

Nonextraction treatment of a skeletal Class III malocclusion.

This case report describes the nonsurgical, nonextraction therapy of a 16-year-old boy with a skeletal Class III malocclusion, a prognathic mandible, and a retrusive maxilla. He was initially classified as needing orthognathic surgery, but he and his parents wanted to avoid that. The Class III malocclusion was corrected with a rapid palatal expander and a maxillary protraction mask followed by nonextraction orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances, combined with short Class III and vertical elastics in the anterior area. The height of the maxillary alveolar process and the vertical face hei

Class II malocclusion: mandibular retrusion or maxillary protrusion?

This study was undertaken to evaluate whether the majority of Class II skeletal patterns are mandibular retrusive or maxillary protrusive and also to compare four maxillary sagittal cephalometric indicators and four mandibular sagittal cephalometric indicators in a skeletal Class II sample. The Fishman SMA method was used to stratify the subjects into 11 maturity levels. Computerized cephalometric programs selected the subjects and compared the different indicators for each subject. The results indicate a wide diversity in the evaluation of maxillary protrusion and mandibular retrusion in thes

Editorial: Airways and malocclusion: etiology and treatment outcomes.

The correlation between the upper airway and malocclusion is still a controversial issue. Craniofacial abnormalities and dental malocclusions, such as mandibular retrusion, maxillary constriction, and vertical skeletal discrepancies, are strongly associated with reduced airway patency and increased pharyngeal collapsibility. This relationship underscores the importance of evaluating craniofacial morphology in both the diagnosis and management of OSAS. Treatment aims not only to reduce apneic events and improve sleep quality but also to restore normal breathing dynamics and prevent long-term ca

Dewey's Modification for Angle's Class I Malocclusion: Revisited.

Introduction Classification is a crucial communication tool between dental school professors and students, between practitioners, and between practitioners and insurance companies or government bureaucracies. The management of patients is significantly impacted by classification. Once a patient has been categorized, the practitioner will frequently use treatment strategies corresponding to that classification. The classification used by orthodontists most frequently is Dewey's version of Angle's categorization. To date, the shortcomings of Dewey's modification were not mentioned in the literat

[Hora est. Malocclusion and playing a wind instrument].

The interplay of all the muscles around the mouth when playing a wind instrument is called 'embouchure'. The teeth also play an important role, as they support the lips against which the mouthpiece is placed. Even a small dental procedure can have a major positive or negative impact on the performance of a wind instrumentalist. Severe malocclusions or craniofacial deformities (such as an oral cleft, large sagittal overbite, or severe crowding) should not discourage one from playing a wind instrument. Wind instrumentalists appear to be able to adapt to a sub-optimal condition, and even reach a

[Multipurpose miniscrews: combined canine disimpaction and malocclusion correction].

The objective of this case series was to show how only one miniscrew can be used to treat simultaneously or successively canine impaction and different malocclusions. Three patients aged of 13 years old who had malocclusions, such as Class II, overbite and canine impaction, were each one treated with the same miniscrew throughout the treatment period. Palatal miniscrews were placed mesially to the first molar and used as a direct or indirect anchorage depending on the moment of the treatment. In each case, satisfactory treatment was obtained with correction of overbite, class II malocclusion a

[Clear aligner technique in early treatment of malocclusion].

The application of clear aligner technique in the preventive and interceptive treatment of children with malocclusion is a new hot spot in orthodontics, which has an extensive application prospect. However, the main advantage of this technique is the ability of predictable tooth movements. Early treatment of malocclusion often involves many aspects, such as muscle function adjustment, orthopedic treatment, and dentition replacement monitoring, etc. Therefore, the indications should be strictly controlled to avoid abusing the technique. The digital treatment planning, clinical monitoring also s

Malocclusion and dental appearance in underprivileged Brazilian adolescents.

Satisfaction with dental aesthetics is a subjective indicator used in epidemiological studies and is related to health behaviours. Little is known about the factors that influence this indicator, particularly among adolescents who live in a situation of social vulnerability. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between malocclusion and dental appearance in underprivileged Brazilian adolescents. This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in Piracicaba, Brazil, and evaluated 884 adolescents from 13 to 19 years of age. The dependent variable was satisfaction with den
