Central ossifying fibroma (COF) is a benign osteogenic neoplasm, with fibrous tissue and calcifications similar to bone, which has the clinical presentation of an asymptomatic bulging. It is more common in the mandibular premolar and molar region, in the third and fourth decades of life, and in women more frequently than men. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice and additional reconstruction is essential due to the functional and esthetic problems faced by the patient. This article describes the surgical treatment and subsequent reconstruction in a 22-year-old man with COF and an expans

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular neoplasm which exhibits the potential for malignancy and recurrence as well as the ability to metastasize. Although numerous sites of involvement are possible, these tumors most commonly arise in soft tissues, lung, liver, bone, and lymph nodes. In this report, we describe a case of oral epithelioid hemangioendothelioma in a child. This tumor appeared as exophytic ulcerated painless masses in the maxillary and mandibular gingiva. Histologically, the tumor was composed of a proliferation of tumor cells arranged in nests, cords, and short stran

BACKGROUND: Desmoplastic fibroma is a rare, benign but locally aggressive fibroblastic tumor of bone, accounting for less than 0.1% of primary bone neoplasms. The mandible is its most frequent site, and occurrence in children is exceptionally uncommon. Because of its infiltrative behavior and the potential for significant functional and aesthetic consequences in growing patients, determining the optimal treatment approach-particularly the role of emerging non-surgical therapies-remains a clinical challenge.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old boy presented with a one-year history of progressive,

Most cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in pinnipeds are diagnosed postmortem; antemortem diagnosis and active therapeutic intervention are rarely reported, and prognosis is generally considered poor. We report an antemortem diagnosis of mandibular oral SCC in a spotted seal (Phoca largha) with progressive feeding difficulty due to tumor-associated pain that worsened despite analgesics. Partial rostral mandibulectomy (left second incisor to right second premolar) with lip-tissue reconstruction restored feeding by postoperative day 2. Despite tumor recurrence, the seal maintained feeding fu

Intraosseous schwannoma of the mandible is rare, with diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The aims of this study were to report new cases of intraosseous schwannoma of the mandible and to propose a clinical classification, providing suggestions for treatment methods. The cases of 13 patients treated at the authors' hospital and 86 cases reported previously in the literature were reviewed. The most common clinical feature was facial swelling (60/93). The rate of cortical thinning or expansion was 44.8% (43/96); widening of the inferior alveolar nerve canal on radiographs was observed in 15 p

A rare case of peripheral osteoma, which developed in the right mandibular condyle of a 27-year-old man, is presented. Condylectomy with reconstruction of the condyle using a rib graft and subsequent mouth opening exercise as well as orthodontic treatment were performed. Occlusion disharmony and facial asymmetry were substantially improved, with no sign of recurrence two years after surgery. Long-term post-operative care of mouth opening exercise is highlighted. Orthodontic treatment is also indicated for better results on occlusal function and facial appearance. Therefore, a team composed of

Osteochondroma (OC) is a common bone tumour that rarely affects the mandibular condylar process. This pathology can show typical clinical features, such as facial asymmetry, deviation of the chin and dental inferior midline, changes in condylar morphology and malocclusion with an increased posterior mandibular vertical height. The management of condylar OC is a debated topic among surgeons. Most of them combine systematically condylectomy with orthognathic surgery while only few others perform in the first instance only condylectomy followed by functional therapy. A case of a 32-year-old femal

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an is an autosomal dominant heritable tumor predisposition syndrome.. Peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNST) are a hallmark of NF1. Plexiform neurofibromas (PNF) are neoplasms that are characteristic of NF1, often causing disfiguring effects (e.g., on the face), and are considered precancerous lesions. Previous studies have shown that facial PNF (FPNF) have an impact on the shape of facial bones. This study examines deviations of mandibular symmetry from cephalometric reference planes considering the topography of FPNF.

Studies conducted under the auspices of International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) have suggested that an alternative mouse carcinogenicity study may be substituted for the traditional 2-year mouse bioassay typically conducted to support the development of drug candidates. The purpose of this study was to characterize the carcinogenic potential of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU), a DNA alkylating agent, in p53+/- knockout mice to determine its suitability as a positive control agent in an alternative carcinogenicity model. p53+/- knockout mice were administered a single oral dose of 90 mg/kg an

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare vascular neoplasm of intermediate malignancy that generally occurs in infancy and early childhood. Typically, the lesion arises from superficial or deep soft tissues of the extremities, trunk and retroperitoneum. The paucity of reported cases of head and neck KHEs is evidence of the rarity of the disease in this region. We report on the presentation and treatment of KHE in an 11-month-old boy who presented with a mandibular lesion. We include a brief discussion about the differential diagnosis of KHE. Management involved preoperative intervention

A 4 mo old female Finnish lapphund presented for further investigation of a swelling of the right rostral mandible. A computed tomography scan showed the swelling to be an expansile and osteolytic mandibular lesion. Histopathology revealed a poorly differentiated, moderately well-demarcated, unencapsulated, highly infiltrative round cell neoplasm, and immunohistochemistry was supportive of a plasmacytoma. Performance of a rostral partial mandibulectomy was initially discussed with the owners, but the lesion improved spontaneously both clinically and on repeated computed tomography scanning bef

Osteoma is a benign osteogenic tumor, which is characterized the slow-growing proliferation of compact or cancellous bone. The etiology of the lesion is not well established. Among the hypotheses, the following are related: a traumatic factor, infectious processes, or true neoplasm due to the origin of cartilaginous cells. It can present at any age, usually in young adult individuals, with equal prevalence in both sexes. The clinical characteristics of the peripheral osteoma are represented by slow asymptomatic growth, which leads to swelling and, thus, facial asymmetry. When it is related to

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), ALK-positive, is a rare subtype of peripheral T-cell lymphoma, most commonly affecting lymph nodes and soft tissues in children and young adults. Primary bone involvement is uncommon, and mandibular localization is exceptionally rare. We present the first reported case of ALK-positive ALCL presenting as a primary bone lymphoma of the mandible in a 12-year-old male. The patient reported with a diffuse, progressively enlarging swelling on the right side of the face. Imaging revealed an ill-defined, FDG-avid (SUV max 13.5) destructive lesion involving the ri

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare soft tissue malignant neoplasm with striated muscle differentiation often found in the head and neck region. In our case a 33-year-old man presented with a bulging mass near his right mandibular second molar tooth, identified as a unilocular destructive lesion on an X-ray. An incisional biopsy confirmed rhabdomyosarcoma, leading to a hemi-mandibulectomy. Histopathologic findings showed spindle and rhabdoid cells with positive immunoreactivity to Desmin, myogenin and myoD1. In conclusion, it is crucial to differentiate rhabdomyosarcoma from other more common intraosse

Ameloblastoma is a benign but locally aggressive neoplasm of odontogenic epithelium origin. Follicular type is the most common variant of ameloblastoma followed by plexiform, acanthomatous, and granular subtypes. Synchronized existence of plexiform ameloblastoma with follicular ameloblastoma is a rare event. When the plexiform type coexists with other common variant, it is termed as hybrid ameloblastoma. Here, we present a case of hybrid ameloblastoma with follicular and plexiform variants occurring in a 43-year-old female patient having persistent swelling for 5-6 months in the left mandibula

Angiosarcoma (AS) is a rare non-epithelial malignant neoplasm arising from neoplastic vascular degeneration of endothelial cells. It usually occurs in soft tissue and skin. The incidence, according to American authors, is 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas. About 50% of AS is localized in head and neck region (scalp and face skin) and represents less than 1% of all malignancies of this district; the primitive intra- oral localization is rare, even rarer intraosseous development of AS in jaw bones. The Authors report a case of a mandibular intraosseus angiosarcoma with different peculiarities: the

Gardner syndrome, a variant of familial adenomatous polyposis, is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by gastrointestinal polyps that develop in the colon as well as in the stomach and upper intestine (duodenum), multiple osteomas, and skin and soft tissue tumors. Cutaneous findings include epidermoid cysts, desmoid tumors, and other benign tumors. Polyps have a 100% risk of undergoing malignant transformation; consequently, early identification and therapy of the disease are critical. Osteoma is a benign neoplasm of bone tissue that is characterized by slow continuous growth and is th
