Nasal aesthetic changes are a key concern in orthognathic surgery. This retrospective cohort study investigated whether the direction and magnitude of maxillary movement independently affect postoperative nasolabial angle (NLA) and nasofacial angle (NFA) following Le Fort I osteotomy in bimaxillary surgery. Forty-four patients (10 men, 34 women; median age 24 years) treated at a single institution were analyzed using standardized lateral cephalograms obtained preoperatively and at 1 week and 12 months postoperatively. Horizontal (anteroposterior) and vertical (superoinferior) maxillary displac

This study aims to compare the clinical outcomes of bioresorbable and titanium fixation systems used in anterior maxillary segmental osteotomy (AMSO) procedures, with a focus on skeletal stability, postoperative complications, and hardware-related morbidity. A prospective, randomized clinical trial was conducted on 50 patients undergoing AMSO. Participants were randomly assigned to 2 groups: bioresorbable fixation using poly- L -lactic acid/polyglycolic acid (PLLA/PGA) (n=15) and conventional titanium miniplates (n=35). Standardized panoramic and cephalometric radiographs were taken preoperati

AIM: The aim of this report is to present the management of the maxillary deformity and subsequent implant therapy of a case with β-thalassemia major.
BACKGROUND: β-thalassemia is a hematologic disorder that results from the abnormality of the β-globulin chain synthesis. The best known thalassemia-induced dentofacial problem is the maxillary enlargement, and this undesirable growth of maxilla affects not only the facial esthetics but also dental occlusion, and leads to functional deficiency.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 16-year-old female patient with β-thalasse-mia major was referred with the compla

INTRODUCTION: The cant of the occlusal plane in the frontal plane reflects facial asymmetry. Its treatment requires close collaboration between the orthodontist and the maxillofacial surgeon. In case of mild cant, treatment consists in coordination of dental arches followed by mandibular osteotomy. For more severe asymmetries, mandibular and maxillar surgery may be necessary to straighten the occlusal plane. However, this procedure can be disproportionate when the cant is moderate. The objective of our case series is to describe an orthodontic-surgical protocol straightening the occlusion plan

The purpose of this study is to present a novel maxillary sinus ventilation drainage (MSVD) device which facilitates blood drainage and nasal breathing after Le Fort I osteotomy. One hundred patients who underwent bimaxillary orthognathic surgery from January 2016 to June 2016 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Chung-Ang University Hospital were retrospectively selected and divided into two groups. MSVD was applied in 50 patients, who were allocated to the MSVD group, while the remaining 50 patients, in whom MSVD was not applied, were allocated to the non-MSVD group. All pati

This study investigated the relationship between the direction of maxillary repositioning after Le Fort I osteotomy and changes in external nasal morphology using lateral cephalograms and frontal facial photographs. The results indicated greater changes in external nasal morphology, such as a more forward position of the nasal tip and an increased alar base width, with anterosuperior repositioning than with posterosuperior repositioning. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the external nasal morphology changes after Le Fort I osteotomy, and that the changes vary depending on the direct

A Le Fort I osteotomy is a common procedure for correcting dental and facial deformities in orthognathic surgery. In rare cases, a delayed hemorrhage can occur as early as several hours or up to 12 weeks, postoperatively. The most frequently involved blood vessels in a delayed hemorrhage are the descending palatine artery, the internal maxillary artery, and the pterygoid venous plexus of veins. Intraoral bleeding accompanied by severe epistaxis in these cases makes it difficult to locate the precise bleeding focus. Eventual uncontrolled bleeding would require Merocel packing or surgical interv

The purpose of this study was to systematically review the randomized and non-randomized clinical trials (RCT; nRCT) concerning the different available osteotomies for surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME): pterygomaxillary disjunction (SARME + PD vs SARME-PD) and segmental Le Fort I osteotomy (2-piece vs 3-piece). Outcomes focused on skeletal, dental, upper airway changes, complications, and relapse. Two authors investigated five databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science) until August 2023. The Cochrane Collaboration Tool and the Newcastle-Ott

A 34-year-old woman with mandibular micrognathia, vertical maxillary excess, and an open bite characterized by a "bird-face" deformity was treated with orthodontics combined with LeFort I and bilateral inverted L osteotomies. The total treatment time was 16 months. Her occlusion and facial appearance were significantly improved by a surgical-orthodontic plan. This case report presents the discussion of a unique and complex orthognathic surgical case and the myriad of orthodontic and surgical considerations that it involved.
