Modeling the Potential Impact of Mentor Mother Programs on Vertical Transmission of HIV in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Peer support provided by "mentor mothers" (MM) may increase retention in care for pregnant and breastfeeding women (PBFW) living with HIV, which can lead to improved viral suppression and prevention of vertical transmission (PVT). The impact of MM on PVT may differ among PBFW subpopulations with different baseline risks of antiretroviral therapy (ART) interruption. METHOD: We used a microsimulation model of HIV progression and care for PBFW living with recently acquired HIV in Kenya to evaluate an MM program that reduced the cumulative risk of ART interruption between initiation o

Empowering Nurse Mentors: A Multi-Site Exploration of the Clinical Scholar Program Implementation.

In the post-pandemic healthcare context, the destabilization of the nursing workforce prompted organizations to recognize the need for additional support in clinical settings to facilitate successful nurse integration and retention. To better understand how mentorship can be optimally structured and operationalized to support transition to practise, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, The Ottawa Hospital and Unity Health Toronto collaborated to explore multi-site experiences with a provincial mentorship program. This case study will describe and compare three organizations' implementation and e

Homeless Veterans' Use of Peer Mentors and Effects on Costs and Utilization in VA Clinics.

OBJECTIVES: The study compared health care utilization and costs among homeless veterans randomly assigned to peer mentors or usual care and described contacts with peer mentors. METHODS: Homeless patients at four Department of Veterans Affairs clinics were randomly assigned to a peer mentor (N=195) or to usual care (N=180). Administrative data on utilization and costs over a six-month follow-up were combined with peer mentors' reports of patient contacts. RESULTS: Most patients (87%) in the peer mentor group had at least one peer contact. Patients in this group spent the largest proportions

Support by trained mentor mothers for abused women: a promising intervention in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a major health problem and negatively affects the victim's mental and physical health. Evidence-based interventions in family practice are scarce. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate a low threshold home-visiting intervention for abused women provided by trained mentor mothers in family practice. The aim was to reduce exposure to IPV, symptoms of depression as well as to improve social support, participation in society and acceptance of mental health care. METHODS: A pre-post study of a 16-week mentoring intervention with identified ab

Improving asthma outcomes in minority children: a randomized, controlled trial of parent mentors.

OBJECTIVE: Because asthma disproportionately affects minorities, we evaluated the effects of parent mentors (PMs) on asthma outcomes in minority children. METHODS: This randomized, controlled trial allocated minority asthmatic children to the PM intervention or traditional asthma care. Intervention families were assigned PMs (experienced parents of asthmatic children who received specialized training). PMs met monthly with children and families at community sites, phoned parents monthly, and made home visits. Ten asthma outcomes and costs were monitored for 1 year. Outcomes were examined by u

Becoming Bilingual in Science: What My Mentors Saw Before I Did.

Geriatric psychiatry, in particular, demands cross-disciplinary fluency because aging is at once biological, psychological, social, and structural. Effective mentorship, therefore, cultivates a kind of "bilingualism" in science--the ability to move across disciplinary languages while maintaining intellectual depth and authenticity. It anchors early-career scientists in their home discipline while intentionally exposing them to adjacent and even distant fields. When this occurs early in training (e.g., during the postdoctoral or K-award stage), it fosters careers defined by intellectual flexibi

The Role of Informal Mentors in Promoting Resilience of Latino/a Late Adolescents and Emerging Adults.

This study examined the compensatory and risk-protective roles of informal mentoring in the longitudinal associations between discrimination and behavioral health problems among Latino/a adolescents and emerging adults. The study addressed the limited research on mentoring among Latino/a youth, particularly with regard to behavioral health, and considered both the presence of and relationship quality with mentors as well as gender differences (girls vs. boys). Latent growth curve analysis was used to investigate trajectories of internalizing and externalizing problems across 11 observations sp

Mentored multimodal prehabilitation for aortic aneurysm surgery: a pilot randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: There is increasing evidence that prehabilitation before surgery may improve patient outcomes and should be established in perioperative care pathways. We aimed to explore the logistics of running a randomised controlled study delivering multimodal prehabilitation (exercise and lifestyle modification) of patients having aortic aneurysm repair. Our primary objective was to assess the feasibility of recruitment, retention, and adherence to study interventions. Secondary objectives were patient outcomes such as function, quality of life and postoperative complications. DESIGN: A feas

A systematic scoping review of mentor training in medical education between 2000 and 2024.

BACKGROUND: Effective mentoring in medical education facilitates professional development amongst mentees and mentors, improves patient care and outcomes, as well as advances the reputation of the host organisation. Much of this success is guided, assessed and overseen by the mentor. Yet, mentor training remains inconsistent, poorly supported and often inadequately evaluated. Acknowledging mentor training as an essential aspect of mentoring programs, we propose a review to map current features and approaches to mentor training with the hopes of boosting the effective design of a proposed mento

Evaluation of a peer-support, 'mentor mother' program in Gaza, Mozambique; a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Retention in prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV programs is critical to reduce vertical transmission. To addresses challenges with retention, Mozambique launched a peer-support program in 2018, in which HIV-positive mothers provide adherence support as mentor mothers (MMs) for HIV-positive pregnant and lactating women and HIV-exposed and infected children. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative evaluation was conducted across nine facilities in Gaza Province to assess the acceptability and barriers to implementation of the mentor mother program (MMP) among those receivi

Evaluating the utility of a global webinar for mentoring medical students and OBGYN residents in REI.

BACKGROUND: In medical school and residency, clinical experiences influence trainee's decisions on what medical specialty they choose. Most trainees have limited access to opportunities to engage in the field of reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the shutdown of away electives, exposure to REI was especially limited. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a live Q and A webinar on improving trainees' access to mentorship and knowledge of the path to becoming a reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) physician. Sibling Conversations about Dating and Sexuality: Sisters as Confidants, Sources of Support, and Mentors.

Using an observational methodology to examine sibling communication, sisters (N = 28 dyads) were videotaped discussing their ideas about dating and sexuality. Social provision theory was used as a framework for the examination of roles enacted by sisters during these conversations. Inductive thematic analytic procedures were conducted and three roles were identified: sisters as confidants, sources of support, and mentors. Older and younger sisters both served as confidants and sources of support for one another, whereas, older sisters were more likely to be mentors for their younger sisters th

The virtual advisor program: linking students to mentors via the world wide web.

BACKGROUND: Emergency medicine (EM) is a popular specialty for medical students choosing a career. Many attend medical schools without an affiliated EM residency and lack both the formal mentorship and informal guidance provided by medical school advisors (or faculty) involved in an accredited EM training program. Others desire specialized advice based on geographic or specific academic interest. OBJECTIVE: The authors describe user characteristics of a Web-based virtual advisor program that paired medical students with EM faculty advisors. METHODS: Prospective users access the system from a

The Importance of Positive Social Support During Reentry From Prison: Examining the Role of Volunteer Mentoring.

Social support appears to be important in improving outcomes for incarcerated individuals during the reentry process not only in terms of general wellbeing but also in gaining employment and avoiding recidivism. Mentoring programs have become increasingly popular interventions that are intended to provide such support during reentry. However, research on mentoring programs is limited and tends to focus solely on the programs' impact on recidivism, a distal outcome. Through the use of semi-structured, in-depth interviews, this qualitative study focuses on more proximal outcomes, exploring how r

A 4-Week Electronic-Mentoring Employment Intervention for Youth With Physical Disabilities: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Youth with disabilities are more likely to live in poverty and be unemployed compared with youth without disabilities. Such trends are often a result of a lack of support, inaccessible jobs, environmental barriers, and discriminatory attitudes toward people with disabilities. Youth with disabilities also face barriers in accessing vocational preparation programs. One encouraging way that could help address challenges that youth encounter is by providing support through electronic mentoring (e-mentoring). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of a 4-w
