Electrowetting-assisted printing of 3D-architectured microelectrodes inside flexible piezoelectric films for sensitive, robust responses to bending deformation.

The voltage outputs of flexible piezoelectric films after bending deformation have always been limited by two factors, including the incompatible polarization direction with bending strain and the interfacial fatigue failure between the piezoelectric films and the electrode layers, largely hindering the applications in wearable electronics. Herein, we demonstrate a new piezoelectric film design, where 3D-architectured microelectrodes are fabricated inside a piezoelectric film by electrowetting-assisted printing of conductive nano-ink into the pre-formed meshed microchannels in the piezoelectri

Use of monopolar microelectrodes and radiofrequency in the treatment of arytenoid edema after partial horizontal laryngectomy and radiotherapy.

We evaluated the tissue reduction effects using monopolar microelectrodes (MME) coupled to a radiofrequency (RF) generator in arytenoid edema caused by postoperative radiotherapy in larynx. This is a retrospective transversal study, which included 15 patients with supraglottic laryngeal carcinoma. All the patients had undergone a partial horizontal laryngectomy and bilateral neck dissection followed by postoperative radiotherapy. The studied group of patients presented laryngeal stenosis defined by arytenoid edema as a complication, requiring permanent tracheostomy for mean of 12 months. The s

In Vivo Real-Time Simultaneous Examination of Drug Kinetics at Two Separate Locations Using Boron-Doped Diamond Microelectrodes.

Methylcobalamin, which is used for the clinical treatment of patients with neuropathy, can have an impact on the sensorineural components associated with the cochlea, and it is possible that the auditory threshold in a certain population of patients with deafness may be recovered. Nonetheless, it remains uncertain whether the action site of methylcobalamin is localized inside or outside the cochlea and which cellular or tissue element is targeted by the drug. In the present work, we developed a method to realize in vivo real-time simultaneous examination of the drug kinetics in two separate lo

Facilitated extracellular electron transfer of Shewanella loihica PV-4 by antimony-doped tin oxide nanoparticles as active microelectrodes.

Dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria are capable of extracellular electron transfer (EET) to insoluble metal oxides as external electron acceptors for their anaerobic respiration, which is recognized as an important energy-conversion process in natural and engineered environments, such as in mineral cycling, bioremediation, and microbial fuel/electrolysis cells. However, the low EET efficiency remains one of the major bottlenecks for its practical application. We report firstly that the microbial current generated by Shewanella loihica PV-4 (S. loihica PV-4) could be greatly improved that is

Brain penetration effects of microelectrodes and deep brain stimulation leads in ventral intermediate nucleus stimulation for essential tremor.

OBJECT: Microelectrode recording (MER) and macrostimulation (test stimulation) are used to refine the optimal deep brain stimulation (DBS) lead placement within the operative setting. It is well known that there can be a microlesion effect with microelectrode trajectories and DBS insertion. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of intraoperative MER and lead placement on tremor severity in a cohort of patients with essential tremor. METHODS: Consecutive patients with essential tremor undergoing unilateral DBS (ventral intermediate nucleus stimulation) for medication-refractory tre

Multi-Step Amperometry for Detecting Dopamine Using Boron-Doped Diamond Microelectrodes in the Striatum of the Mouse Brain.

The real-time measurement of dopamine concentration in the brain is crucial in elucidating dopamine-related physiological functions and pathologies and guiding therapeutic development. Boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes have emerged as promising tools for use in biological measurement because of their exceptional durabilities, sensitivities, and biocompatibilities, but electrochemically distinguishing dopamine from norepinephrine, which exhibits a similar chemical structure, remains challenging. Other substances that interfere with dopamine detection include tyrosine, L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylal

Transient ST-segment-elevation during pulmonary vein ablation using circumferential coiled microelectrodes in a prospective multi-centre study.

AIMS: Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) is predominantly triggered by focal ectopies located within the pulmonary veins (PV). The BITMAP Study (Breakthrough and Isolation Trial: Mapping and Ablation of Pulmonary Veins) investigated prospectively the safety and efficacy of a catheter design with circumferential mapping and ablation electrodes. We report the phenomenon of ST-segment-elevation during catheter placement in the left atrium (LA) and superior PVs in this multi-centre study. METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-three patients (57+/-10 years) with PAF were included in this study. Radiofreque

Chloride and potassium activities in luminal fluid of turtle thyroid follicles as determined by selective ion-exchanger microelectrodes.

Cl(-) and K(+) activities in the follicular lumen and the intraluminal potential of the same lumen were measured simultaneously with specific liquid ion-exchanger and 3 M KCl microelectrodes, respectively, in turtle thyroid glands. The Cl(-) equilibrium potential between the thyroid interstitium and the lumen calculated from the measured Cl(-) activities was higher than the directly measured intraluminal potential. These data indicate that Cl(-) is actively transported out of the follicular lumen in turtle thyroid gland. On the other hand, the calculated K(+) equilibrium potential was not diff

Stretchable Microelectrode Arrays with Microneedles for Reliable Electrophysiological Recording of Human Heart and Brain Organoids.

Real-time, non-destructive monitoring of electrophysiological dynamics of 3D organoids is imperative for advancing disease modeling and high-throughput drug screening. However, obtaining continuous, reliable signals remains difficult due to the destructive nature of penetrating probes and the unreliable contact issue prone to surface recordings. Here, we present a stretchable 3D microelectrode array with microneedles (3D MN-sMEA) fabricated via a scalable wafer-level stud-bump bonding process for minimally destructive and stable monitoring. We achieve high-fidelity, reliable electrophysiologic

Stability of ruthenium oxide-coated microelectrode arrays for chronic stimulation of rat somatosensory cortex.

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the primary somatosensory cortex offers the potential for restoring sensory function in neuroprosthetic applications; however, achieving stable long-term performance from implanted electrode materials remains a challenge. Recently, ruthenium oxide (RuOx) has emerged as a viable faradaic coating material suitable for ICMS application due to its high-charge injection capacity, low impedance, and stable electrochemical properties. However, its long-term in vivo performance remains an area of active investigation. In this study, we evaluated the viability o

The conformal, high-density SpineWrap microelectrode array for focal stimulation and selective muscle recruitment.

Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) of the spinal cord is widely applied for pain management and has garnered considerable interest as a possible route to functional restoration after spinal cord injury. Currently, EES employs bulky, non-conformal paddle arrays with low channel counts. This limits stimulation effectiveness by requiring high stimulation currents, reduces selectivity of muscle recruitment, and requires subject-specific designs to accommodate varied neuroanatomy across the patient population. Here, we report on a thin-film, high-channel count microelectrode array, termed SpineW

Enhanced Performance of Novel Amorphous Silicon Carbide Microelectrode Arrays in Rat Motor Cortex.

Implantable microelectrode arrays (MEAs) enable the recording of electrical activity from cortical neurons for applications that include brain-machine interfaces. However, MEAs show reduced recording capabilities under chronic implantation conditions. This has largely been attributed to the brain's foreign body response, which is marked by neuroinflammation and gliosis in the immediate vicinity of the MEA implantation site. This has prompted the development of novel MEAs with either coatings or architectures that aim to reduce the tissue response. The present study examines the comparative per

Microelectrode recordings from the human cervical vagus nerve during maximal breath-holds.

Voluntary breath-holds can be sustained for a long time following training, but ultimately, regardless of duration, the asphyxic break-point is reached and the apnoea terminated. The physiological changes occurring during the apnoea include a marked increase in sympathetically-mediated vasoconstriction in non-essential organs, such as skeletal muscle, spleen and kidney, while the brain is protected by a marked increase in perfusion. What is not understood is what happens to cardiac vagal activity. Here, we performed microelectrode recordings from the right cervical vagus nerve in healthy parti

Agarose Phantoms for Insertion Characterization of Amorphous SiC Microelectrode Probes in Rat Brain Tissue.

Penetrating, Ultra-small Microelectrode Arrays (UMEAs) have been shown to evoke less foreign body response on implantation in neural tissue. This may be attributed to reduced tissue displacement on implantation and reduced mechanical mismatch between the highly flexible UMEA and tissue. However, the high flexibility of UMEAs makes implantation challenging. Establishing a robust model of tissue insertion may provide information on the forces encountered during implantation, assess the likelihood of UMEA penetration without buckling. In this study we measured insertion forces of amorphous SiC pr

Microelectrode recording characterization of the nucleus accumbens and the anterior limb of internal capsule in patients with addiction.

The nucleus accumbens (NAc) and the anterior limb of internal capsule (ALIC) are effective targets for treating addiction using deep brain stimulation (DBS). However, there have been no reports on the electrophysiological characteristics of addiction nuclei at the single-cell level in humans. This study aimed to investigate the electrical activity characteristics of neurons in the NAc and ALIC using microelectrode recording (MER) during DBS surgery in patients with addiction, and six patients with addiction were included (five with heroin addiction and one with alcohol addiction). Recent Progress on Transparent Microelectrode-Based Soft Bioelectronic Devices for Neuroscience and Cardiac Research.

Transparent microelectrodes have emerged as promising tools to combine electrical and optical sensing and modulation modalities in many areas of biological and biomedical research. Compared to conventional opaque microelectrodes, they offer a number of specific advantages that can enable advances in functionality and performance. In addition to optical transparency, the mechanical softness feature is desired to minimize foreign body responses, increase biocompatibility, and avoid loss of functionality. In this review, we present recent research from the past several years on transparent microe

Robot-assisted implantation of a microelectrode array in the occipital lobe as a visual prosthesis: technical note.

The prospect of direct interaction between the brain and computers has been investigated in recent decades, revealing several potential applications. One of these is sight restoration in profoundly blind people, which is based on the ability to elicit visual perceptions while directly stimulating the occipital cortex. Technological innovation has led to the development of microelectrodes implantable on the brain surface. The feasibility of implanting a microelectrode on the visual cortex has already been shown in animals, with promising results. Current research has focused on the implantation
