Kawasaki disease in Mongolia: results from 2 nationwide retrospective surveys, 1996-2008.

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD) has been reported in many countries. However, the incidence of KD in Mongolia is not known. This is the first report of incident cases of KD in Mongolia, which were identified using data from 2 nationwide surveys. METHODS: Two nationwide retrospective surveys were conducted: medical histories were collected from patients aged 0 to 16 years who were hospitalized countrywide between 1996 and 2008. Hospital records for these patients were also reviewed. Nationwide training seminars on KD were conducted before each survey. RESULTS: For the nationwide surveys, th

Maternal drinking water arsenic exposure and perinatal outcomes in inner Mongolia, China.

BACKGROUND: Bayingnormen is a region located in western Inner Mongolia China, with a population that is exposed to a wide range of drinking water arsenic concentrations. The relationship between maternal drinking water arsenic exposure and perinatal endpoints (term birth weight, preterm birth, stillbirth and neonatal death) in this region was evaluated in this study. METHODS: An analysis was conducted of all singleton deliveries in a defined geographical area of Inner Mongolia from December 1996 to December 1999 (n=9890). Outcome and covariate data were abstracted from prenatal care records.

Divergent responses of forage quality indicators to environmental drivers in Eastern Mongolia.

Forage quality is crucial for determining livestock productivity as well as ecosystem health, and consequently is a critical parameter for sustainable rangeland management. However, most studies concentrate on forage amount alone, and it remains largely unknown to what extent climate, soil, and disturbance impact seasonal forage quality. Across spring, summer and autumn, we conducted a large-scale field study at 63 sites in the eastern Mongolian steppe, arguably the largest intact steppe region under traditional mobile land use. We performed exploratory multivariate analyses to check the corre

[Epidemiology and management of echinococcosis in China and Mongolia and the risk of cross-border transmission].

Currently, echinococcosis is highly prevalent in both China and Mongolia, and the risk of cross-border echinococcosis transmission raises growing concerns. This article describes the epidemiology of echinococcosis in China and Mongolia, compares echinococcosis control measures between the countries, and discusses the potential risk of cross-border echinococcosis transmission due to human and animal mobility, transboundary movement of animal hosts, and disparities in control capacity between the two countries. In addition, the article proposes the promising cooperation areas for joint preventio

Questionnaire survey on public awareness of cleft lip with/without palate in Mongolia.

The frequency of cleft lip with/without palate (CL/P) in the Mongolian population is approximately 1 in 1314 live births. This research aims to disseminate information about this congenital disability to the public to better understand CL/P, and people's fissures, and review administrative measures, as there is a lack of research in this area. A questionnaire survey was conducted using Google Forms, with 1000 Mongolian participants. Most participants (86.7%) said they had knowledge of the word, whereas 86.2% said they had knowledge of the condition. Most participants' answers were question-rel

Severe Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in a Hemodialysis Patient: A Case Report from Mongolia.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) occurs in patients with chronic renal failure complicated with renal bone disease and soft tissue/vascular calcification. In dialysis patients with severe SHPT, medical treatment may fail and parathyroidectomy (PTX) is indicated for definitive treatment. Severe hypocalcemia from hungry bone disease or postoperative hypoparathyroidism may occur during the postoperative period. We report here a case of severe SHPT in a hemodialysis patient treated with phosphate binders, calcitriol, and calcimimetics but who still required PTX. Severe hypocalcemia with muscle

The PCR detection and phylogenetic characterization of Babesia microti in questing ticks in Mongolia.

Babesia microti is a tick-transmitted zoonotic hemoprotozoan parasite. In the present study, we investigated B. microti infection in questing ticks in Mongolia. A total of 219 questing ticks were collected from three different Mongolian provinces (Bayan-Olgii, Khovsgol, and Selenge). Of these, 63 from Selenge were identified as Ixodes persulcatus, while the remaining 156 (from all three provinces) were identified as Dermacentor nuttalli. When the tick DNA samples were screened using a B. microti-specific nested PCR, 19 (30.2%) of the 63 I. persulcatus ticks were found to be B. microti-positive

A low rate of hepatitis B virus vaccine breakthrough infections in Mongolia.

A nation-wide hepatitis B virus (HBV) immunization program of all newborn babies was launched in Mongolia in 1991. However, the continuation of clinical icteric viral hepatitis infections in children led to the investigation to determine whether HBV breakthrough infections were occurring and if any were due to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) mutants. Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infections accounted for most of these cases with 3% of the jaundiced children shown to have acute hepatitis B. Hepatitis B vaccine protection was 93% against HBV infection and 97% against HBV carriage. A G145A "escape
