Famine exposure in childhood and multimorbidity risk in older adults.

BackgroundPrevious research on multimorbidity focused on patterns, prevalence, and correlation and studies on famine have primarily focused on single diseases, with limited research on its effect on multimorbidity, especially in China.AimsOur study aimed to examine the association between famine exposure and the risk of multimorbidity through a cross-sectional survey in older adults.MethodsA total of 1580 community-dwelling older people were included in this study. Famine exposure was classified as nonexposed, toddlers exposed (1-3 years old exposed), preschool-age children exposed (4-6 years

Computational precision nutrition for sarcopenia and associated multimorbidity in ageing.

Sarcopenia is the age-related progressive decline in both skeletal muscle mass and function. It acts as an exacerbator of multimorbidity, engaging in bidirectional pathological cycles with multiple chronic diseases, and contributes substantially to increased mortality, disability and healthcare costs. Current nutritional support is often limited by a generic one-size-fits-all approach that fails to account for substantial inter-individual variation across genetics, metabolism, lifestyle, gut microbiome composition and other dimensions. This Review charts the progression from established strate

Geographical barriers and multimorbidity in quilombola territories of the amazon region.

BACKGROUND: Quilombola communities in the Brazilian Amazon face persistent social and territorial inequities that shape health outcomes and access to care. Geographic isolation, limited transportation, centralization of specialized services, and socioeconomic disadvantages contribute to unequal opportunities for timely diagnosis and treatment. Understanding how these determinants interact with patterns of multimorbidity is essential for guiding equiTable health policies and strengthening primary care in remote territories. METHODS: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted with 51

Multimorbidity in adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Individuals living with two or more long-term health conditions, known as multimorbidity, experience poorer physical and mental well-being due to the incremental effect of co-existing conditions. Research on multimorbidity mainly focuses on adults and rarely on adolescents (10-19 years), especially in Africa. We aimed to describe the prevalence of adolescent multimorbidity in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: We conducted a PROSPERO-registered systematic review (CRD42024513430), searching five databases (Medline, EMBASE, Global Health, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, PsycEXTRA, and Africa Index Medi

The multivariate genetic architecture of psychiatric and insulin resistance multimorbidity.

Psychiatric disorders frequently co-occur with insulin resistance (IR)-related conditions, including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and metabolic syndrome (MetS). While genetic correlations have been reported, the genetics underlying this multimorbidity remains underexplored. Here, we investigate the joint genetic architecture of psychiatric-IR multimorbidity and explore links with the brain, tissue-specific gene expression, potential underlying biological mechanisms, and repurposable drugs. Genomic structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to genome-wide association studies (G

[Multimorbid patients in visceral surgery-Upper gastrointestinal tract].

The treatment of multimorbid patients in oncological surgery of the upper gastrointestinal tract requires a differentiated consideration of every single risk factor in order to provide a holistic assessment. This article focuses on pre-existing diseases that are particularly relevant for elective esophageal and gastric surgery and have practical clinical consequences. In this way a differtiation is made between metabolic, vascular, cardiopulmonary and organ-specific risks. The aim of this work is to provide practical guidelines for complex and multimorbid cases. Given the multifactorial interr

A person-centred clinical approach to the multimorbid patient with COPD.

Most patients with a chronic disease are multimorbid. This is particularly important in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), who on average have five other identified comorbidities that independently impact their health and increase their mortality risk. Using a modified Delphi method, we selected the 20 most important diseases associated with COPD and clustered them into five domains: mental, respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolic and multiple organs loss of tissue. We then developed a systematic approach to characterise the impact and clinical presentation of individua

Prevention and Management of Multimorbidity in Southeast Asia: A Narrative Review.

Multimorbidity, the coexistence of two or more chronic conditions, presents a growing global challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as Southeast Asia. This trend necessitates the development of sustainable integrated care models to prevent and manage multimorbidity effectively. However, progress in this area has been hampered, especially in underdeveloped regions, by various barriers, including the epidemiology of multimorbidity, how to get different specialists and doctors to work together most availably and manage the multiple medication issues and how to develop co

Eczema in early childhood increases the risk of allergic multimorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Eczema in early childhood is associated with the development of subsequent allergic diseases, including food allergy (FA), asthma and hay fever. However, eczema has a heterogenous presentation regarding onset age and persistence, which may lead to different allergic outcomes during childhood/adolescence. Recently, sub-phenotypes of eczema have been suggested as predictors of allergic multimorbidity. Thus, we aimed to identify associations of eczema phenotypes with FA, asthma and hay fever during childhood/adolescence. Additionally, we described the trajectories of eczema, asthma an

Poland Syndrome and Multimorbidity in a 79-Year-Old Male.

This case study highlights a 79-year-old man with chronic low back pain attributed to severe lumbar scoliosis. Physical examination revealed the unilateral absence of pectoral muscles and ipsilateral hand anomalies, indicative of Poland syndrome (PS). The patient also experienced depression due to chronic pain and PS-related anomalies. A multi-disciplinary approach proved effective in alleviating both pain and depression.

Conditions and Co-production of Integrated Care for Patients with Multimorbidity.

INTRODUCTION: People with multimorbidity can experience fragmented healthcare and burden of treatment and the evidence-base for integrated care in multimorbidity is weak. The aim of this study was to develop a model for integrated care for patients with multimorbidity: The Primary Organization and Relations-Team (PORT). DESCRIPTION: The PORT prototype was formed using a co-production approach including workshops with healthcare professionals from hospital, general practice and municipalities, and interviews with patients with multimorbidity. The qualitative data were analyzed with systematic

From Multimorbidity to Network Medicine in Patients with Rheumatic Diseases.

The transition from a comorbidity-based to a multimorbidity-focused to ultimately a network medicine approach in people with rheumatic diseases might mark a significant shift in how we understand and manage these complex conditions. Multimorbidity expands on the concept of comorbidity by encompassing the presence of multiple diseases, which results in further individual and societal impacts. This approach, while valuable, often leads to fragmented care focused on individual diseases rather than the patient as a whole.Network medicine, on the other hand, offers a more integrated perspective. It

Aortic Stiffness: A Major Risk Factor for Multimorbidity in the Elderly.

Multimorbidity, the coexistence of multiple health conditions in an individual, has emerged as one of the greatest challenges facing health services, and this crisis is partly driven by the aging population. Aging is associated with increased aortic stiffness (AoStiff), which in turn is linked with several morbidities frequently affecting and having disastrous consequences for the elderly. These include hypertension, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, chronic kidney disease, anemia, ischemic stroke, and dementia. Two or more of these disorders (multimorbidity) often co

Multimorbidity in people living with and beyond cancer: a scoping review.

Globally, both cancer incidence and survival are increasing. Early cancer detection and improved treatment means many people with cancer will survive for ten or more years following diagnosis. Multimorbidity, defined as two or more chronic conditions, is up to three times higher in people living with and beyond cancer (LWBC) compared to the general population. This scoping review summarises the research evidence on the association between cancer and multimorbidity in people LWBC. It explores five key domains in people LWBC: 1) prevalence of multimorbidity, 2) association between ethnicity and

Noncommunicable disease and multimorbidity in young adults with cerebral palsy.

PURPOSE: Individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) are at increased risk for frailty and chronic disease due to factors experienced throughout the lifespan, such as excessive sedentary behaviors and malnutrition. However, little is known about noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and multimorbidity profiles in young adults with CP. The study objective was to compare NCD and multimorbidity profiles between young adults with and without CP. METHODS: A clinic-based sample of adults (18-30 years) with (n=452) and without (n=448) CP was examined at the University of Michigan Medical Center. The prevalence a
