Background and Objectives: Music therapy has a long tradition in palliative care, and recent studies have investigated its Neuro-Psycho-Endocrine-Immunological (NPEI) effects in terminally ill patients. Despite numerous published articles, there is a lack of a compendium connecting the physiological basis of music therapy with the specific musical elements most effective in end-of-life settings. This narrative review aims to synthesize current evidence on the physiological mechanisms underlying responses to music, with a focus on terminal patients and implications for nursing practice. Stroke is a highly disabling condition, for which music therapy is regularly used in rehabilitation. One possible mechanism for the effects of music therapy is the motivational aspect of music, for example regarding treatment adherence based on improved mood. In this study, changes in motivation related to Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) techniques during rehabilitation in the subacute phase after stroke will be investigated. Using a randomised within-subjects cross-over design, the effects of two NMT techniques and related motivational indices will be investigated. Data will be collected at th

Hospital-associated delirium is common in older adults, especially those with dementia, and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. We performed a feasibility study in the emergency department (ED) to examine the effect of light and/or music on the incidence of hospital- associated delirium. Patients aged ≥ 65 who presented to the ED and tested positive for cognitive impairment were enrolled in the study (n = 133). Patients were randomized to one of four treatment arms: music, light, music and light, and usual care. They received the intervention during their ED stay. In the control g

BACKGROUND: Dementia stands out as a neurological disorder which constitutes a progressive decline in cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and social functioning. However, non-pharmacotherapy, such as music therapy, can be combined with pharmacological treatment as a possible strategy to improve functionality regarding the cognitive and non-cognitive dimensions of people diagnosed with dementia.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze and synthesize published evidence regarding the effectiveness of music therapy in people diagnosed with dementia, concerning cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes.
DESIGN: Descript

Music therapy has been shown to be efficacious in experimental studies. However, there is little empirical research knowledge about what elements of music therapy influence its effectiveness in clinical practice. Children and adolescents with psychopathology (N=75) were assessed before and after participating in individual music therapy with 1 out of 15 music therapists in the Vienna region. Relationships between outcomes (as evaluated by parents) and therapy contents (as reported by therapists) were examined using general linear modelling. Results indicated that clients' symptoms and burdens

BACKGROUND: No effective therapies exist to prevent degeneration from Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer's disease. Therapies integrating music and/or dance are promising as effective, non-pharmacological options to mitigate cognitive decline.
OBJECTIVE: To deepen our understanding of individuals' relationships (i.e., histories, experiences and attitudes) with music and dance that are not often incorporated into music- and dance-based therapeutic design, yet may affect therapeutic outcomes.
METHODS: Eleven older adults with MCI and five of their care partners/ spouses participated

INTRODUCTION: With the proliferation of digital technologies, research on virtual reality-assisted music therapy (VR-assisted MT) has expanded across clinical, rehabilitation, and wellness contexts. This scoping review aimed to map the current applications and characteristics of VR-assisted MT, defined as interventions in which music or music therapy is intentionally integrated as a therapeutic component rather than used solely as incidental headset audio.
METHODS: The review followed the scoping review framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley, was further informed by updated JBI guidance, a

OBJECTIVE: Many stroke survivors still present with upper-limb paresis six months post-stroke, impacting their autonomy and quality of life (QoL). We designed an enriched Music-supported Therapy (eMST) program to reduce disability in this population. We evaluated the eMST's effectiveness in improving functional abilities and QoL in chronic stroke individuals compared to the conventional motor program Graded Repetitive Arm Supplementary Program (GRASP).
METHODS: We conducted a pragmatic two-arm parallel-group randomized controlled trial with a 3-month follow-up and masked assessment. The eMST

The purpose of this study was to investigate how premature infants' oxygen saturation changed in response to music therapy while they were receiving endotracheal suctioning. A convenience sample of 30 premature infants was selected from three neonatal intensive care units. A one-group repeated measures design was adopted for this study. The oxygen saturation of all subjects was first measured while they were receiving endotracheal suctioning during a four-hour control period with regular care. Then, four hours after the control period was completed, an experimental period began in which the mu

Music therapy yet to be discovered as a target of psychotherapy research. A first step consists in creating adequate samples of significant musical dialogues. Video-recording is an essential requirement for establishing such data. To test the clinical view that the emotional content of the musical dialogue in music therapy reflects the basic relationship issues of a patient was the objective of this study. By using ratings of significant musical dialogue sequences with the instrument of semantic differential comparing groups with varying clinical expertise (music therapists, psychoanalyts, lay
