Ethylene production is associated with alleviation of cadmium-induced oxidative stress by sulfur in mustard types differing in ethylene sensitivity.

We studied the response of ethylene-sensitive (Pusa Jai Kisan) and ethylene-insensitive (SS2) mustard (Brassica juncea) cultivars to 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mM SO₄(2-), and the effect of 1.0 mM SO₄(2-) was studied in the amelioration of 50 µM cadmium (Cd). The Cd-induced oxidative stress and Cd accumulation were greater in SS2 than Pusa Jai Kisan, but sulfur (S) application alleviated Cd-induced oxidative stress more prominently in Pusa Jai Kisan by increasing S-metabolism and synthesis of reduced glutathione (GSH) and ethylene production; and promoted photosynthesis and plant dry mass under Cd st

Effect of green manure on the incidence of cyanogenic Pseudomonas strains in hop garden soils.

Incidence of cyanogenic Pseudomonas strains in hop garden soils in relation to the kind of fertilization was studied. Incidence differed with respect to the fertilization treatment and the age of the plantation. Amendment of soil with rye and with white mustard as green manures limited the number of cyanogenic Pseudomonas strains relative to farmyard manures and NPK fertilization. Among all fertilization treatments, cyanogenic Pseudomonas spp. strains had lowest populations in soils amended with white mustard.

Nanobiochar-assisted phytostabilization of lead and cadmium in mustard (Brassica campestris L.) is associated with reduced metal availability and improved physiological performance.

Nanobiochar is well documented for heavy metal removal from water, but its efficacy in soil phytostabilization remains less explored. This study compared nanobiochar (NB) and rice husk powder (RH) at 50 and 100 g kg-1 for improving Pb and Cd phytostabilization in mustard (Brassica campestris L.) under pot conditions. Compared with the no-adsorbent treatment, NB at 100 g kg-1 increased shoot fresh weight by 73.2% under Pb stress and 2.02-fold under Cd stress. It also increased pod number by 46.8% under Pb and 52.5% under Cd stress, while total seeds per plant increased by 80.1% and 2.26-fold, r

Underpinning regions associated with nitrogen use efficiency in Brassica juncea L. Czern: using associative transcriptomics approach.

BACKGROUND: Breeding crops for enhanced understanding of apparent nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) requires understanding of phenotypic variations and underlying genetics. Improving NUE in Indian mustard is considered important to reduce nitrogen (N) fertilizer use without sacrificing crop yield. In the present study, 260 genotypes of Brassica juncea were field evaluated for seed yield and NUE-related traits at three N levels: N0 (no added nitrogen), N50 (50 kg/ha nitrogen), and N100 (100 kg/ha nitrogen) for two years. RESULTS: N response in plants varied depending on the dose of nitrogen applie

Mitigation of salt stress in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.) by the application of triacontanol and hydrogen sulfide.

Salinity stress is a well-known abiotic stress that has been shown to have a negative impact on crop growth, production, and soil richness. The current study was intended to ameliorate salt stress in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.), keeping in mind the detrimental influence of salt stress. A pot experimentation was executed on B. juncea to examine the efficacy of exogenous application of triacontanol (TRIA) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) (NaHS donor), either alone or in combination, on growth attributes, metabolites, and antioxidant defense system exposed to salt stress at three distinct conce

LimosiLactobacillus pentosus Isolated from Mustard Relieves Drug-induced Constipation in Mice Fed a High-fat Diet by Modulating Enteric Neurotransmitter Function.

Functional constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders. Oxidative stress can aggravate organ dysfunction. Enteric neurotransmitters have significant effects on the regulation of the enteric nervous system and intestinal muscle contraction. Oxidative stress and reduced gastrointestinal motility are considered to be one of the main causes of constipation. This study aimed to investigate whether LimosiLactobacillus pentosus CQZC02 alleviated loperamide hydrochloride (Lop)-induced constipation in mice under high-fat diet (HFD) conditions and to elucidate the underlying mechan

Role of ethylene in alleviation of cadmium-induced photosynthetic capacity inhibition by sulphur in mustard.

Sulphur (S) assimilation leads to the formation of glutathione (GSH) and alleviation of cadmium (Cd) stress. GSH is synthesized from its immediate metabolite cysteine, which also serves as a metabolite for ethylene formation through S-adenosyl methionine. To assess the role of ethylene in S-induced alleviation of Cd stress on photosynthesis, the effects of S or ethephon (ethylene source) on GSH and ethylene were examined in mustard (Brassica juncea L. cv. Varuna). Sufficient-S at 100 mg S kg(-1) soil alleviated Cd-induced photosynthetic inhibition more than excess-S (200 mg S kg(-1) soil) via

Uroprotective mechanisms of natural products against cyclophosphamide-induced urinary bladder toxicity: A comprehensive review.

One of the widely used anticancer drugs for the treatment of various neoplasms is cyclophosphamide (CYP). The inactive prodrug CYP is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzyme into active metabolites, phosphoramide mustard and acrolein. The accumulation of acrolein metabolite inside the urothelium results in hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) which is a urotoxic adverse effect associated with the use of CYP. To counteract the occurrence of HC induced by CYP, Mesna is usually used, with allergic reactions reported in some cases. Therefore, several natural products have drawn much attention as alternative sa

Whole-crop harvestable chicory for the phytoextraction of copper from wine-growing soils and its use in animal feed.

BACKGROUND: Since 2018, European Union regulations have reduced copper (Cu) doses in viticulture to combat fungal diseases, but Cu continues to accumulate in soils, potentially harming soil organisms. The aim of our study was to reduce the Cu content of soils by means of phytoextraction, followed by the reuse of Cu for animal feed supplements. RESULTS: Firstly, hydroponic crops (brown mustard, chicory, hemp, oats and sunflower) showed that plant growth decreased with increasing Cu exposure (0.32 up to 280 μmol L-1), except for ryegrass and buckwheat. The roots accumulated the most Cu, and buc

Whole-genome sequencing and functional validation of the plant growth-promoting Bacillus velezensis DO23 isolated in Vietnam.

Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) represent a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilisers and pesticides; however, their agricultural application requires rigorous evaluation of both functional efficacy and biosafety. In this study, we conducted an integrated genomic and phenotypic characterisation of Bacillus velezensis DO23, a rhizosphere-derived strain isolated from chilli pepper (Capsicum annuum L.)-cultivated soils in Vietnam, to assess its potential as a plant growth-promoting inoculant. Whole-genome sequencing revealed a 3.99 Mb draft genome with a GC content of 46.1% and confi

Proposals for chemical weapons during the American Civil War.

Proposals for chemical weapons that arose during the American Civil War are described. Most incendiary and all biological agents are excluded. The described proposals appeared primarily in periodicals or letters to government officials on both sides. The weapons were usually meant to temporarily disable enemy combatants, but some might have been lethal, and Civil War caregivers were ill-prepared to deal with the weapons' effects. Evidently, none of the proposed weapons were used. In only one instance was use against civilians mentioned. Among the agents most commonly proposed were cayenne pepp

Usability of food industry waste oils as fuel for diesel engines.

Two cogeneration units were each fitted with a prechamber (IDI) diesel engine in order to test the feasibility of using waste oils from the food industry as a fuel source, and additionally to test emissions generated by the combustion of these fuels. Esterified waste oils and animal fats as well as mustard oil were tested and compared to the more or less "common" fuels: diesel, rapeseed oil and rapeseed methyl ester. The results show that, in principle, each of these fuels is suitable for use in a prechamber diesel engine. Engine performance can be maintained at a constant level. Without catal

Linked by Ancestral Bonds: Multiple Whole-Genome Duplications and Reticulate Evolution in a Brassicaceae Tribe.

Pervasive hybridization and whole-genome duplications (WGDs) influenced genome evolution in several eukaryotic lineages. Although frequent and recurrent hybridizations may result in reticulate phylogenies, the evolutionary events underlying these reticulations, including detailed structure of the ancestral diploid and polyploid genomes, were only rarely reconstructed. Here, we elucidate the complex genomic history of a monophyletic clade from the mustard family (Brassicaceae), showing contentious relationships to the early-diverging clades of this model plant family. Genome evolution in the cr

Phosphate-solubilizing and plant-growth-promoting Pseudomonas aeruginosa PS1 improves greengram performance in quizalafop-p-ethyl and clodinafop amended soil.

The quizalafop-p-ethyl- and clodinafop-tolerant phosphate-solubilizing and plant-growth-promoting Pseudomonas aeruginosa PS1 isolated from the rhizospheric soils of mustard was used to determine its phosphate-solubilizing activity and other plant-growth-promoting traits both in the presence and absence of technical grade quizalafop-p-ethyl and clodinafop under in vitro conditions. Quizalafop-p-ethyl (at 40, 80, and 120 ppb) and clodinafop (at 400, 800, and 1200 ppb) reduced the P-solubilizing activity, synthesis of indole-3-acetic acid, and siderophores progressively with increasing concentrat

Nitric oxide alters nitrogen metabolism and PIN gene expressions by playing protective role in arsenic challenged Brassica juncea L.

Plants have ability to adapt themselves through altering their growth process. In the present study, we examined exogenous application of nitric oxide (NO) on nitrogen metabolism and auxin (PIN) gene expression, and its possible role in alleviation of arsenic (As) toxicity in Brassica juncea seedlings. Seven days old hydroponically grown B. juncea seedlings were exposed to AsIII (150 μM), Sodium nitroprusside (NO donor, 100 μM), AsIII + SNP and control (without metal)for 48 h. Experimental results revealed that AsIII stress: enhanced the level of nitrite, NiR activity, NO3- and NH4+content as

Screening of chelating ligands to enhance mercury accumulation from historically mercury-contaminated soils for phytoextraction.

Screening of optimal chelating ligands which not only have high capacities to enhance plant uptake of mercury (Hg) from soil but also can decrease bioavailable Hg concentration in soil is necessary to establish a viable chemically-assisted phytoextraction. Therefore, Brassica juncea was exposed to historically Hg-contaminated soil (total Hg, 90 mg kg-1) to investigate the efficiency of seven chelating agents [ammonium thiosulphate, sodium thiosulphate, ammonium sulfate, ammonium chloride, sodium nitrate, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and sodium sulfite] at enhancing Hg phytoextractio

The effect of illumination of the malic acid content and anion/cation balance of mustard leaves (Sinapis alba).

1. Mustard plants have been grown under conditions in which the length of artificial day could be controlled. 2. Leaf samples were analysed for malic acid and citric acid, and for a number of inorganic anions and cations. A simple method is described by which sap was obtained from 0.5g. samples of leaves. 3. In days of 16hr. or more, malic acid was accumulated; the chief cation accumulated was calcium. 4. When the day-length was reduced the malic acid content decreased considerably but the calcium content remained the same. There was little change in the pH value of the sap, the balance of ani
