OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that simulation training improves echocardiography skills.
STUDY DESIGN: In this prospective study, 43 participants (16 neonatologists, 26 neonatology fellows, and 1 nurse practitioner) were tested on the simulator after 4 hours of didactic sessions on topographical cardiac anatomy and standard echocardiographic views. Participants were given 20 minutes to obtain and save the standard views. After the simulation hands-on training for 8 hours over 3 days, they were tested again. Each image was scored from 0 to 3 based on the im

BACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed to examine the feasibility of arterial switch operation and its perioperative management with neonatology-focused intensive care modality in a region of Turkey where the birth rate and the number of asylum seekers who had to leave their country due to regional conflicts are high.
METHODS: Between December 2017 and June 2020, a total of 57 patients (48 males, 9 females; median age: 12.2 days; range, 2 to 50 days) who were diagnosed with transposition of the great arteries in our clinic and underwent arterial switch operation were retrospectively analyzed. Al

If newborns have an airway obstruction, they require urgent and expert management to avoid mortality and morbidity. The definition of difficult airway includes problems in endotracheal intubation or positive pressure ventilation with bag and mask or T-piece resuscitator. Management should be based on an understanding of the pathophysiological mechanism responsible for difficult airway. The causes of difficult airway in the newborn can be congenital or acquired. We present the case of a newborn with Treacher-Collins syndrome Type 1 [OMIM # 154500] with a mandibulofacial dysostosis, micrognathia

The number of controlled clinical trials in neonatal medicine has increased steadily over recent years. However, most of these trials examine only short-term outcomes during the initial hospital stay. To determine whether a common neonatal intervention does more good than harm, it is important to study its long-term efficacy and safety. This review summarizes randomized trials of neonatal therapies published between October 2000 and September 2001. Only trials that examine outcomes beyond the initial hospital discharge were considered. Four beneficial interventions were identified: promotion o

This narrative non-systematic review addresses the sex-specific differences observed both in prenatal period and, subsequently, in early childhood. Indeed, gender influences the type of birth and related complications. The risk of preterm birth, perinatal diseases, and differences on efficacy for pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, as well as prevention programs, will be evaluated. Although male newborns get more disadvantages, the physiological changes during growth and factors like social, demographic, and behavioural reverse this prevalence for some diseases. Therefore, given

AIM: The prevalence of deafness in a pediatric hospital Caritas Baby Hospital in Bethlehem was described.
METHOD: All the clinical records of neonates born September 25, 2006 to March 25, 2007 screened for deafness were selected.
RESULTS: Among the 274 screened newborns, 112 were females and 162 males, 97% from the districts of Bethlehem and Hebron, and 3% from other locations in the West Bank. The most recurrent diagnoses were jaundice, potential sepsis and prematurity. Sixty-three were positive at the first screening, 26 at the second screening and only 4 were visited by the audiologist, w

UNLABELLED: Surfactant therapy has significantly changed clinical practice in neonatology over the last 25 years. Recent trials in infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) have not shown superiority of any natural surfactant over another. Advancements in the development of synthetic surfactants are promising, yet to date none has been shown to be superior to natural preparations. Ideally, surfactant would be administered without requiring mechanical ventilation. An increasing number of studies investigate the roles of alternative modes of administration and the use of nasal continuous

To control an outbreak of community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) in a neonatology unit, an investigation was conducted that involved screening neonates and parents, molecular analysis of MRSA isolates and long-term follow-up of cases. During a two-month period in the summer of 2000, Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-producing CA-MRSA (strain ST5-MRSA-IV) was detected in five neonates. The mother of the index caseshowed signs of mastitis and wound infection and consequently tested positive for CA-MRSA. A small cluster of endemic, PVL-negative MRSA strains (ST228-MRSA-I) occurred in parallel. Enhan

Natural permanent pneumarthrography (NPP) is due to entrance of gases in-to the joint spaces following a sudden increase in intra articular volume and lowering of intra articular pressure by sudden stresses. A case of N.P.P. of the hip occurred in one of two stillborn twins (breech delivery); the causes of death were some amniotic bridles of the cord with consequent stop in the blood flow.

The authors have checked transcutaneous PO2 in newborns in the Neonatology Department of Maria Vittoria Hospital, Torino, Italy. 39 full-term newborns (healthy, Apgar score more than 7) have been monitorized during their first minutes. The results have been divided in four groups: spontaneous birth or caesarean section with fetal suffering or not. Significant differences have been shown between newborns with fetal suffering whether they were born by caesarean section or not, and between born by caesarean section with or without fetal suffering. 27 newborns with gestational age of 32 weeks or l

The European Society for Paediatric Research (ESPR) first developed recommendations for a Neonatology specific European training curriculum in 1998, with updates in 2007 and 2021. The aim of these recommendations was to define a common, European standard of training for national educational programmes for Neonatologists. Following the Union of European Medical Specialists' (UEMS) framework of European Training Requirements (ETR), and similar to the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) recommendations, graduates of training programmes conforming to the ETR will be eligible throughout Europe for r

AIM: Communication is essential, yet rarely taught in paediatrics. The literature describes skills to improve parent communication in neonatal intensive care units.
METHODS: A PubMed search from 1 January 2023 to 5 May 2025 retrieved articles on communication in neonatology. Communication related to poor prognosis, end-of-life, antenatal issues, ethics and family integrated care was excluded. Data underwent deductive and inductive thematic analysis.
RESULTS: The review included 37 articles, with three themes: basic skills of good communication, means of strengthening communication and learni

Extreme prematurity is associated with significant risk of mortality and morbidities. Neonatal follow-up assesses health outcomes of babies as they grow older to improve care and contribute to research and quality improvement initiatives. Recent investigations demonstrate that parents and clinicians/researchers disagree about what is defined as a "severe outcome". Families report they need balanced information about functioning rather than medical diagnoses. Many functional domains other than the presence/absence of impairment are not evaluated during neonatal follow-up. This article recommend

Reducing neonatal mortality is a crucial part of health-care programs. We wanted to analyze the in-hospital mortality in the tertiary referral Department of Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care of the Medical University of Bialystok. The study was conducted on data of all neonates admitted to the Department between 2015 and 2023 (N = 19 171). During the study period the in-hospital mortality rate was 5.16 per 1000 live births and it was the highest in 2021 (8.15 per 1000 live births, p < 0.05). The leading underlying cause of death was extreme prematurity. 43.75% of the extremely preterm or

Advances in the care of neonates to the extreme limits of viability have increased the risk of severe comorbidities in surviving preemies. The respiratory and the neurodevelopmental consequences of premature birth and/or intra-uterine growth retardation have been well described. Because of the usual clinical silence of the kidney, the long-term renal consequences of low birth weight have not been as well studied. A case report illustrates the risk factors associated with low birth weight and prematurity and discusses the pathogenesis of the late consequences of the congenital nephron deficit a

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) programs require collaboration between neonatologists, ophthalmologists, nurses, and allied health personnel, together with parents. The concept of a ROP program will vary according to the setting. However, in every situation there should be 2 main aspects: primary prevention of ROP through better overall care, and secondary prevention through case detection (often called screening), treatment, and follow-up. ROP programs will have different content and emphasis according to whether the setting is in an economically advanced or developing country.

Over the past 30 years, I have noted 4 epidemiological points, each of which, I believe, must inform future conversations between neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) physicians, parents, and policy makers. First, there are no credible arguments against NICU care that rely on invoking cost or distributive justice. NICU dollars are remarkably well targeted to children who will ultimately survive to be discharged, as opposed to die in the NICU. If any rationing arguments are to be made, then they should be directed against sick adults in intensive care units. Second, the vast majority of infants
