Hormonal correlates of breeding status, nest construction, and parental care in multiple-brooded northern mockingbirds, Mimus polyglottos.

Blood samples were taken from free-living male and female mockingbirds to determine correlations between plasma steroids and breeding behavior. Plasma levels of testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), progesterone (P), and corticosterone (B) were assessed during pre-breeding courtship, while males built nests, while females incubated, while parents fed young, and while males built new nests as pairs continued to care for dependent fledglings. Samples were also taken from unmated males holding spring territories. In males, T and P fluctuated with breeding phase, and in all groups, male T levels excee

The progression of behavioral and pathological effects of the parasite Toxocara canis in the mouse.

Toxocara canis, the parasitic roundworm of the dog may infect aberrant hosts including mice and humans. The present study examined the behavioral and pathological changes at each of three postintubation periods (Period 1: 8-10 days, 2: 49-51 days, and 3: 84-86 days postintubation, respectively) in independent groups of mice intubated with 1000 eggs of T. canis. Eight-ten days after intubation Toxocara infected animals typically showed depressed levels of activity relative to saline-intubated controls. The scope and severity of behavioral changes were attenuated when different mice were tested

Behavioral Effects of Low Concentrations of Boric Acid and Thiamethoxam Baits on the Laboratory Colonies of the Argentine Ant.

The Argentine ant, Linepithema humile (Mayr), is an important invasive pest in natural, agricultural, and urban ecosystems worldwide. Boric acid and thiamethoxam have been used as bait toxicants for Argentine ant management. Most of the toxicological investigations on these toxicants have focused on the mortality of the ants. However, their behavioral effects on target ants remain poorly understood. By focusing on the in-nest aggregation and out-nest activity level, the current study investigated the behavioral effects of low concentrations of boric acid and thiamethoxam on Argentine ants. Bor

Metabolic alkalosis due to feeding chicks in breeding Adélie penguins Pygoscelis adeliae under natural conditions.

Prolonged abnormal vomiting causes metabolic alkalosis. Many seabirds are known to feed their chicks by regurgitation. We hypothesized that metabolic alkalosis occurs in seabirds even under natural conditions during the breeding season. Adélie penguins Pygoscelis adeliae feed their chicks by regurgitating food for 50-60 d until the chicks fledge. In this study, the concentrations of Cl(-), HCO(3)(-), Na+, K+, pH, and PCO2 in the blood of breeding Adélie penguins were measured throughout the chick-rearing season. The pH of penguin venous blood shifted from 7.54 in the guarding period to 7.47 in

Concentrations of prolactin and luteinizing hormone in plasma of doves in relation to incubation and development of the crop gland.

The concentrations of prolactin and LH were measured in the plasma of male and female ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) during the breeding cycle. Prolactin concentrations were low during courtship and early incubation but increased markedly (P less than 0.01 in both sexes) between days 7 and 15 of incubation, during the period of rapid growth of the crop sac. Levels remained raised for 4 days after the young had hatched but then declined as the crop sacs gradually regressed. These observations showed that concentrations of prolactin were high at the time when the crop sacs were proliferating

Phonon self-energy and origin of anomalous neutron scattering spectra in SnTe and PbTe thermoelectrics.

The anharmonic lattice dynamics of rock-salt thermoelectric compounds SnTe and PbTe are investigated with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and first-principles calculations. The experiments show that, surprisingly, although SnTe is closer to the ferroelectric instability, phonon spectra in PbTe exhibit a more anharmonic character. This behavior is reproduced in first-principles calculations of the temperature-dependent phonon self-energy. Our simulations reveal how the nesting of phonon dispersions induces prominent features in the self-energy, which account for the measured INS spectra and

Fauna Associated with American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) Nests in Coastal South Carolina, USA.

Crocodilians are considered to be "ecosystem engineers" because their modification of habitats provides opportunities for feeding, drinking, breeding, and other vital life activities to a wide variety of other animals. One such habitat modification is the construction of nest mounds during the breeding season by most crocodilian species, including American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis). While many reports exist describing wildlife associated with alligator nests, no studies have quantified faunal associates and their corresponding behaviors while visiting nests. To address this data

Phenological Flexibility in Nesting Grassland Birds Over a Half Century Informs Timing of Management.

The timing of biological events for wildlife species reflects and influences ecological and evolutionary processes and helps guide management actions to meet conservation objectives. Climate change may cause phenological shifts across trophic levels and ecosystems, which can have broad ecological impacts. Shifts may also result in mistiming between management practices based on historical conditions and current biological events, reducing the effectiveness of natural resource management and conservation efforts. We analyzed nesting phenology patterns over recent decades across North America fo

Effects of Experimental Anthropogenic Noise Exposure on the Reproductive Success of Secondary Cavity Nesting Birds.

Artificial nest boxes are critical nesting sites for secondary cavity-nesting birds; however, they are often placed near roadways and in urban areas that experience noise pollution and other human-caused stressors. Recent correlative studies document both negative and positive influences of noise pollution on reproductive success. Additionally, observational studies have not determined which stage of the breeding process is most vulnerable to noise pollution-settlement, incubation, and/or provisioning. Here, we controlled for possible effects from non-random settlement and eliminated potential

Trace element concentrations in nesting flatback turtles (Natator depressus) from Curtis Island, Queensland, Australia.

The blood and eggs of the flatback turtle (Natator depressus) sampled when nesting at Curtis Island, Queensland, Australia. In the blood, zinc was present at the highest concentration of 151.15 ± 1.45 μg/L followed by copper (7.74 ± 0.09 μg/L). Lead was found only in some individuals. The measured trace elements in the blood were maternally transferred into the eggs. Other metals and metalloids detected in eggs were chromium, manganese, arsenic and selenium. Eggs showed a more complex trace element profile than blood, suggesting that they provided more representative tissues for determining ma

Avian phenotypic traits related to feeding preferences in two Culex mosquitoes.

Host choice by mosquitoes affects the transmission dynamics of vector-borne infectious diseases. Although asymmetries in mosquito attraction to vertebrate species have been reported, the relative importance of host characteristics in mosquito blood-feeding behavior is still poorly studied. Here, we investigate the relationship between avian phenotypic traits-in particular, morphometry, plumage coloration, and nesting and roosting behavior-and the blood-feeding patterns in two common Culex mosquito species on a North American avian community. Forage ratios of the mosquito species were unrelated

Are caiman nests microhabitats? Assessing their ecological role across different levels of anthropogenic disturbance.

Wild vertebrates face increasing threats from human activities, particularly land-use changes, which disrupt ecological interactions and ecosystem structure. Animal-built structures, such as nests, can provide resources for diverse species, especially under conditions of environmental stress. Here, we evaluate whether broad-snouted caiman nests function as microhabitats for other vertebrates across varying levels of anthropogenic disturbance in Santa Fe, Argentina. Over four nesting seasons we monitored 64 nests in forests, savannahs and floating vegetation using camera traps, examining verteb

Nestling sex and behaviour determine the host preference of insect vectors in avian nests.

Sexual differences in pathogen prevalence in wildlife often arise from varying susceptibility influenced by factors such as sex hormones and exposure to pathogens. In the case of vector-borne pathogens, host selection by insect vectors determines the exposure of hosts to infections, largely affecting the transmission of these infectious diseases. We identify the blood-feeding patterns of insect vectors in Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) nestlings in a 3-year study. Blood from both nestlings and insect vectors (Culicoides spp. and Simuliidae) captured inside nest-boxes were used to molecularly d

Patterns of host use by brood parasitic Maculinea butterflies across Europe.

The range of hosts exploited by a parasite is determined by several factors, including host availability, infectivity and exploitability. Each of these can be the target of natural selection on both host and parasite, which will determine the local outcome of interactions, and potentially lead to coevolution. However, geographical variation in host use and specificity has rarely been investigated. Maculinea (= Phengaris) butterflies are brood parasites of Myrmica ants that are patchily distributed across the Palæarctic and have been studied extensively in Europe. Here, we review the published

Effects of artificial eggs on prolactin secretion, steroid levels, brood patch development, incubation onset and clutch size in the yellow-eyed penguin (Megadyptes antipodes).

Several studies have shown that the transition from egg laying to incubation behavior in birds is associated with changes in plasma levels of prolactin and steroid hormones. However, any effect of the tactile and visual input provided by eggs at initiating these hormonal changes has not been fully investigated in wild birds. A few days before yellow-eyed penguins, Megadyptes antipodes, started egg laying, we placed an artificial egg into their nests or under cages next to their nest. We then investigated the effect of the tactile and/or visual stimulus of such an artificial egg on prolactin se

Locating Nesting Sites for Critically Endangered Galápagos Pink Land Iguanas (Conolophus marthae).

Invasive alien species control is recognized worldwide as a priority action to preserve global biodiversity. However, a lack of general life history knowledge for threatened species can impede the effectiveness of conservation actions. Galápagos pink land iguanas (Conolophus marthae) are endemic to Wolf Volcano, Galápagos, Ecuador. These iguanas are threatened by invasive alien species, particularly feral cats, that may affect their small population size. To guarantee the long-term survival of C. marthae, the Galápagos National Park Directorate is considering, along with an ongoing campaign of

Neonatal resource scarcity alters maternal care and impacts offspring core temperature and growth in rats.

Stressful experiences during childhood, including poverty and inconsistent parental care, can enhance vulnerability for worsened physical and mental health outcomes in adulthood. Using Sprague Dawley rats, the present study explored the impact of limited resource availability on maternal behavior and physiological and emotional behavior outcomes in the offspring. Early life adversity was induced by incorporating aspects of the limited bedding and nesting and scarcity models, wherein limited resource availability has previously been shown to provoke unpredictable or adverse maternal care respec

Effects of Repeated Treatment with the Monoacylglycerol Lipase Inhibitor MJN110 on Pain-Related Depression of Nesting and Cannabinoid 1 Receptor Function in Male and Female Mice.

MJN110 inhibits the enzyme monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) to increase levels of the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol , an endogenous high-efficacy agonist of cannabinoid 1 and 2 receptors (CB1/2R). MAGL inhibitors are under consideration as candidate analgesics, and we reported previously that acute MJN110 produced partial antinociception in an assay of pain-related behavioral depression in mice. Given the need for repeated analgesic administration in many pain patients and the potential for analgesic tolerance during repeated treatment, this study examined antinociceptive effects of rep

Functional diversity of farmland bees across rural-urban landscapes in a tropical megacity.

Urbanization poses a major threat to biodiversity and food security, as expanding cities, especially in the Global South, increasingly compete with natural and agricultural lands. However, the impact of urban expansion on agricultural biodiversity in tropical regions is overlooked. Here we assess how urbanization affects the functional response of farmland bees, the most important pollinators for crop production. We sampled bees across three seasons in 36 conventional vegetable-producing farms spread along an urbanization gradient in Bengaluru, an Indian megacity. We investigated how landscape

Nest building performance following MPTP toxicity in mice.

Systemic injection of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) in mice is one of the primary models used to evaluate neuroprotective and symptomatic treatment strategies for Parkinson's disease. Many behavioral methods for evaluation of MPTP toxicity have been described, but they often involve challenging scenarios that require handling and transfer of animals to novel environments and in some cases prior animal training. These factors can profoundly influence animal behavior and potentially influence experimental outcome. Presented here is a new nest building scoring paradigm based
