Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during a picture naming task of simple and complex words in children with typical speech and with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Results reveal reduced amplitude prior to speaking complex (multisyllabic) words relative to simple (monosyllabic) words for the CAS group over the right hemisphere during a time window thought to reflect phonological encoding of word forms. Group differences were also observed prior to production of spoken tokens regardless of word complexity during a time window just prior to speech onset (thought to reflect motor p

Stress urinary incontinence is the most common type of urinary incontinence in women. Stress urinary incontinence involves involuntary leakage of urine in response to abdominal pressure caused by activities, such as sneezing and coughing. The condition affects millions of women worldwide, causing physical discomfort as well as social distress and even social isolation. This type of incontinence is often seen in women after middle age and it can be caused by impaired closure mechanisms of the urethra as a result of a weak pelvic floor or poorly supported urethral sphincter (urethral hypermobili

PURPOSE: Intraoperative neurophysiological techniques are becoming routine tools for neurosurgical practice. Procedures affecting the lumbosacral nervous system are frequent in adult and pediatric neurosurgery. This review provides an overview of the techniques utilized in cauda and conus operations.
METHODS: Two basic methodologies of intraoperative neurophysiological testing are utilized during surgery in the lumbosacral spinal canal. Mapping techniques help identify functional neural structures, namely, nerve roots and their respective spinal levels. Monitoring is referred to as the techno

Peroneal neuropathy is one of the common focal mononeuropathies in the lower extremities occurring in both adults and children. Foot drop due to weakness of ankle dorsiflexion is the most common presentation of a peroneal neuropathy. It may also result from other causes involving the upper or lower motor neurons. Disorders that must be distinguished from peroneal neuropathy include sciatic mononeuropathy, lumbosacral plexopathy, motor neuron disease, polyneuropathy, and an L5 radiculopathy. To establish a diagnosis, electrodiagnostic studies have been used to localize the level of the abnormal

RATIONALE: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive tool that directly stimulates cortical neurons by inducing magnetic and secondary electric fields. Traditionally TMS has been used to study the motor neurophysiology of healthy subjects and those with neurological disorders.
OBJECTIVE: Given the known motor dysfunctions in many psychiatric disorders supplemental usage of TMS to study the underlying pathophysiology of certain psychiatric disorders and to assess treatment outcomes is underway. Such studies include examination of motor neuronal membrane, corticospinal and intrac

This article reviews a series of magnetoencephalographic (MEG) experiments aimed at identifying cortical areas and time windows relevant or even critical for fluent reading. The approach was to compare single-word processing in fluent and dyslexic readers. The activations which differed between the two groups were then studied in more detail to determine their functional roles. In fluent reading, overall visual feature processing occurs about 100 milliseconds (ms) after seeing a word, in the posteromedial extrastriate cortex bilaterally. This activation does not differentiate between letters a

Intraoperative neurophysiology (ION) plays a crucial role in dorsal rhizotomy, a procedure aimed at reducing spasticity while preserving neural function. ION encompasses monitoring and mapping, with the mapping of the root/rootlet constituting a significant component. Despite the acknowledged roles of ION, persistent controversies exist, and a universally accepted standard for integrating ION procedures into dorsal rhizotomy remains elusive. This chapter provides a detailed explanation of the author's approach to dorsal rhizotomy, with a primary focus on the decision-making process for root/ro

INTRODUCTION: The insidious interrelation between three key factors underscores the critical need to understand the neural control of the lower urinary tract (LUT): the complexity of its functioning, the epidemiology of conditions that can disrupt it, and the nonspecific presentation of related symptoms. This paper examines the importance of understanding neurophysiology of micturition to prevent mismanagement and reduce unnecessary procedures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This review focuses on the neurophysiology of the micturition cycle, the epidemiology of major health conditions that affect it,

The cerebellum is a complex structure tightly connected to the cerebral cortex, brainstem, and spinal cord. It plays an important role in movement coordination and motor planning. Lately, it has been also recognized as a key component in cognitive circuits. The specific motor functions of the cerebellum include the control of the initiation, execution, and velocity of movements, as well as the maintenance of balance, motor coordination, and muscle tonus. Cerebellar lesions typically result in ataxia but can also lead to other manifestations, such as abnormal eye movements, severe vertigo, or i

BACKGROUND: A thorough history and physical examination may be insufficient for comprehensively studying patients with tremor. In such instances, neurophysiology serves as an adjunct to the physical examination.
OBJECTIVES: Our aim is to present compelling evidence supporting the utilization of neurophysiological studies in various tremor conditions.
METHODS: A panel of global experts, convened by the Study Group on Clinical Neurophysiology for Movement Disorders, examined the application and utility of neurophysiology across diverse movement disorders.
RESULTS: This manuscript provides a d

Since the first electroencephalographic recordings obtained by Golla and Winter in 1959, researchers have used a variety of neurophysiological techniques to determine the mechanisms underlying recurrent migraine attacks. Neurophysiological methods have shown that the brain during the interictal phase of an episodic migraine is characterized by a general hyperresponsiveness to sensory stimuli, a malfunction of the monoaminergic brainstem circuits, and by functional alterations of the thalamus and thalamocortical loop. All of these alterations vary plastically during the phases of the migraine c

Identifying hit songs is notoriously difficult. Traditionally, song elements have been measured from large databases to identify the lyrical aspects of hits. We took a different methodological approach, measuring neurophysiologic responses to a set of songs provided by a streaming music service that identified hits and flops. We compared several statistical approaches to examine the predictive accuracy of each technique. A linear statistical model using two neural measures identified hits with 69% accuracy. Then, we created a synthetic set data and applied ensemble machine learning to capture

Spinal dysraphism is a group of disorders resulting from an embryologic failure of spinal cord development which can lead to a radicular-medullary mechanical stretch that generates vascular compromise and hypoxic-ischemic damage to the nervous structures of the conus-cauda region. Thus, the clinical relevance of the different types of spinal dysraphism is related to the possible neurologic deficits resulting from spinal cord tethering. The clinical presentation is heterogenous: from asymptomatic to very compromised patients. The indications and the time of a detethering surgery are still subjec

This paper revisits the taxonomy of the neurophysiological consequences of a persistent impairment of motor command execution in the classic environment of sensorimotor restriction and muscle hypo-mobilization in short position. Around each joint, the syndrome involves 2 disorders, muscular and neurologic. The muscular disorder is promoted by muscle hypo-mobilization in short position in the context of paresis, in the hours and days after paresis onset: this genetically mediated, evolving myopathy, is called spastic myopathy. The clinician may suspect it by feeling extensibility loss in a rest

BACKGROUND: Vestibular paroxysmia (VP) is defined as neurovascular compression (NVC) syndrome of the eighth cranial nerve (N.VIII). The aim was to assess the sensitivity and specificity of MRI and the significance of audiovestibular testing in the diagnosis of VP.
METHODS: 20 VP patients and, for control, 20 subjects with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) were included and underwent MRI (constructive interference in steady-state, time-of-flight MR angiography) for detection of a NVC between N.VIII and vessels. All VP patients received detailed audiovestibular testing.
RESULTS: A NVC of N.VIII could
