BACKGROUND: Neurosensory irritation is a subjective phenomenon induced by a number of chemicals. Objectives. To investigate the sensory irritation induced by two organic solvents - n-octane and cumene - between two groups of volunteers, stingers and non-stingers, identified as such according to the results of a lactic acid stinging test (LAST).

An organic solvent-stable lipase (LST-03 lipase) secreted into the culture broth of the organic solvent-tolerant Pseudomonas aeruginosa LST-03 was purified by ion-exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatography in the presence of 2-propanol. The purified enzyme was homogeneous as determined by SDS-PAGE. The molecular mass of the lipase was estimated to be 27.1 kDa by SDS-PAGE and 36 kDa by gel filtration. A palladium-catalyzed annulation of ortho-vinylanilines with dimethyl sulfoxide was developed to access 4-aryl quinolines in moderate to good yields. Activated by 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane bis(sulfur dioxide) adduct (DABSO), DMSO served as a "[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-" fragment in this transformation. Water dynamics as reflected by the spectral diffusion of the water hydroxyl stretch were measured in w(0) = 2 (1.7 nm diameter) Aerosol-OT (AOT)/water reverse micelles in carbon tetrachloride and in isooctane solvents using ultrafast 2D IR vibrational echo spectroscopy. The design and synthesis of two conformationally restricted oxazabicyclo octane derivatives as GRP119 agonists is described. Derivatives of scaffold C, with syn configuration, have the best overall profiles with respect to solubility and in vivo efficacy. Compound 25a was found to have extremely potent agonistic activity and was orally active in lowering blood glucose levels in a mouse oral glucose tolerance test at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg.

The first asymmetric total synthesis of a 16-membered macrolide, aspergillide D, is described. The chiral centers of the acid are derived from d-ribose and the alcohol subunit from 1,8-octane diol through Sharpless kinetic resolution, respectively.
