Aqueous extracts of onion, garlic and ginger inhibit platelet aggregation and alter arachidonic acid metabolism.

Aqueous extracts of onion, garlic and ginger inhibited platelet aggregation induced by several aggregation agents, including arachidonate (AA), in a dose-dependent manner. While onion and garlic extracts were found to be weak inhibitors of platelet thromboxane synthesis, ginger extract inhibited the platelet cyclooxygenase products and this effect correlated well with its inhibitory effects on the platelet aggregation induced by the above aggregation agents. These two effects were dose-dependent. Although the three aqueous extracts inhibited the biosynthesis of 6-keto-F1 alpha in rat aortic ri

Determining the potential link between irrigation water quality and the microbiological quality of onions by phenotypic and genotypic characterization of Escherichia coli isolates.

The potential transfer of human pathogenic bacteria present in irrigation water onto fresh produce was investigated, because surface water sources used for irrigation purposes in South Africa have increasingly been reported to be contaminated with enteric bacterial pathogens. A microbiological analysis was performed of a selected river in Limpopo Province, South Africa, that is often contaminated with raw sewage from municipal sewage works and overhead irrigated onions produced on a commercial farm. Counts of Escherichia coli, coliforms, aerobic bacteria, fungi, and yeasts and the prevalence o

Short-Chain Inulin and Inulin Neoseries Oligosaccharides from Red Onions Enrich Beneficial Gut Taxa and Attenuate Obesity-Related Outcomes in a Rat Model.

Prebiotic-mediated gut microbiota modulation is a promising approach for obesity management. Red onions have been identified as a potential source of inulin and inulin neoseries oligosaccharides. This study evaluated the in vivo effects of short-chain inulin and inulin neoseries oligosaccharides (SCIINOs) on the fecal microbiota of obese rats and assessed their potential role in obesity attenuation. Male Wistar rats were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 16 weeks to induce obesity, while control rats received a normal diet (ND). From weeks 16 to 24, HFD-fed obese rats were randomly assigned to fou

First Report of Enterobacter ludwigii and Other Potentially Pathogenic Enteric Bacteria in Onions, Soil, and Irrigation Water from the Vhembe Region, South Africa.

The presence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in fresh produce constitutes a significant public health concern, particularly in rural areas where untreated water is commonly used for irrigation. Certain Enterobacter species have been reported as causal agents of onion bulb rot, with Enterobacter cloacae experimentally demonstrated to cause bulb rot in onions. However, there is poor documentation of its effects in the Vhembe District, South Africa. This study investigated the detection and identification of enteric bacteria in onions, soil, and irrigation water, as well as the characterisati

Synergistic effects of organic fertilizer and copper-calcium nanoparticles on onion growth and storage under arid conditions.

Onion (Allium cepa L.) production in hyper-arid environments is constrained by poor soil fertility, limited water availability, and post-harvest losses that reduce market viability. The interactive effects of foliar application of copper oxide (CuO) and calcium oxide (CaO) nanoparticles (NPs), combined with sugarcane filter mud cake (FMC), on onion growth and storage quality in calcareous hyper-arid soils remain to be characterized. A two-season field study (2023/24-2024/25) evaluated the effects of FMC (30 t ha⁻¹) combined with foliar CuO NPs (10, 20, and 30 mg L⁻¹) and CaO NPs (50, 100, and

LDL-Cholesterol-Lowering Effects of a Dietary Supplement Containing Onion and Garlic Extract Used in Healthy Volunteers.

Hypercholesterolemia plays a pivotal role in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases, and its prevention seems to be a crucial healthcare strategy to ameliorate these conditions. Subjects with mild hypercholesterolemia are frequently advised against using cholesterol-lowering drugs due to potential side effects, with an emphasis instead on prioritizing dietary adjustments and lifestyle modifications as the primary strategy. In this context, the use of dietary supplements based on medicinal plants may be recommended as a complementary approach to managing elevated cholesterol

Removal of ciprofloxacin from water by graphene oxide-like carbon nanosheets derived from onion peel.

The widespread presence of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in aquatic environments poses significant risks to public health and ecosystems due to its role in promoting antibiotic resistance. Addressing this challenge, we developed graphene oxide-like carbon nanosheets (CNSs) from onion peel waste as a low-cost and sustainable adsorbent for efficient CIP removal from water, where the cost savings originate from free raw materials and an energy-efficient synthesis, thereby valorizing waste and reducing pollutants as key sustainability indicators. The CNSs, synthesized via pyrolysis and ultrasonic exfoliatio

Onion-Mitochondria Inhibit Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Acute Lung Injury by Shaping Lung Macrophage Mitochondrial Function.

Mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to various inflammatory-related diseases by triggering the release of inflammatory molecules. Targeting mitochondrial dysfunction is emerging as a promising avenue for treating inflammatory diseases. Here, it is demonstrated that dietary plant-derived mitochondria (P-Mit) are capable of rescuing the lung macrophage mitochondrial (M-Mit) dysfunction in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced mouse acute lung injury (ALI). Specifically, oral administration of dietary onion-derived mitochondria (O-Mit) can travel from the gut to the lungs in ALI mice, where preferen

Factors affecting onion production: An empirical study in the Raya Kobo district, Amhara regional state, Ethiopia.

Onion is a vital vegetable crop in Ethiopia, with significant economic and health benefits. However, its production trend is not consistent, with periods of increase and decrease; and its productivity in the country falls far below its potential. As a result, farmers are not yet fully benefited from onion production. Thus, this study was initiated to identify the factors influencing onion production in the Raya Kobo District of Amhara Regional State of Ethiopia. Data was collected from 189 onion-producing farmers through household surveys, and both descriptive and econometric techniques were u

Improvement of nutrient elements and allicin content in green onion (Allium fistulosum) plants exposed to CuO nanoparticles.

With the exponential growth of nanomaterial production in the last years, nano copper (Cu)-based compounds are gaining more consideration in agriculture since they can work as pesticides or fertilizers. Chinese scallions (Allium fistulosum), which are characterized by their high content of the antioxidant allicin, were the chosen plants for this study. Spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were used to evaluate the nutrient element, allicin content, and enzyme antioxidant properties of scallion plants. Plants were harvested after growing for 80 days at greenhouse conditions in soil amended

Investigation of food products containing garlic or onion for a false positive sulphite response by LC-MS/MS.

In the US, sulphites must be declared on the label if they are present in concentrations greater than 10 mg/kg (determined as) SO2 because an allergic-like response has been reported in a small subset of the population upon consumption of sulphite-containing products. The most widely used method for sulphite determination, the optimised Monier-Williams (OMW), produces false positive results with vegetables from the Allium (garlic) and Brassica (cabbage) genera due to extraction conditions that are thought to cause endogenous sulphur compounds to release SO2. Recently, an LC-MS/MS method was de

Disturbance and competition drive diversity effects in cabbage-aphid-onion systems with intra-specific genetic variation.

Decreased reliance on pesticides can be achieved through a clever use of eco-evolutionary knowledge via intercropping economically valuable crops with companion plants that can hamper pest outbreaks. We created a greenhouse multi-layered microcosm system to test two potato peach aphid clones, performing alone or in competition, on mixes of genetically variable cultivars of cabbage, with and without onion. The onion acted as a nuisance/disturbance for the pest, which was generally for the benefit of the cabbage albeit both plants sharing space and nutrients. The onion effect was context-specifi
