A 6-year-old boy diagnosed with congenital microphthalmic OS was referred for prosthetic eye fitting. He was otherwise healthy without known congenital anomalies. His visual acuity was 20/20 in the OD and no light perception in the OS. His disfigured OS with a conjunctivalized opaque cornea appeared smaller than his OD. He had left esotropia with severely restricted ductions in all directions of gaze. The preoperative orbital MRI of the patient revealed a small orbital cyst posteroinferior to the OS. Because the patient could not tolerate the prosthetic eye worn over his disfigured eye, evisce

PURPOSE: To present an alternative evisceration technique with long-term follow-up data. This technique involves the insertion of an acrylic implant into a modified scleral shell which is closed using an autologous scleral graft.
METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of eviscerations performed in a district-general hospital in the UK. All patients underwent conventional ocular evisceration after total keratectomy. A full thickness scleral graft is harvested from the posterior sclera, using an internal approach, with an 8 mm dermatological punch. An 18-20 mm acrylic implant is placed into

PURPOSE: Orbital implants are used as fillers following enucleation or evisceration surgeries to replace the lost volume for better cosmesis and motility of the artificial eye. Over the last decade porous hydroxyapatite (HAp) implants derived from the naturally occurring corals, are increasingly used. Recently synthetic HAp-based implants have been introduced. After fibrovasculrisation they have the added advantage of being directly integrated with the artificial shell, thereby increasing the motility to a great extent. The current study, evaluated the efficacy of two different models of synth

Ophthalmologists continue to search for the ideal orbital implant for the anophthalmic socket. The successful long-term clinical performance of an implantable prosthesis is highly dependent on the materials from which the device is fabricated. Among the materials issues are chemistry, surface texture, and porosity. Polyethylene, a polymer comprised of simple hydrocarbon chains, is highly resistant to biological degradation and possesses mass and fabrication properties that would be favorable in an orbital implant. In this report, our early experimental experience with porous polyethylene orbit

BACKGROUND: Evisceration and nucleation are commonly performed ophthalmic surgeries for painful blind eye, disfiguring blind eye, endophthalmitis etc. After both these surgeries it is important to replace the lost volume in the orbit with implant. Implant is associated with many complications such as major discharge, exposure with discharge and implant exposure. The main surgical management of implant exposures basically primary revision or patch grafting with or without removal of the implant.
CASE: A 60 years old man presented to ophthalmic OPD with complaint of foreign body sensation and i

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of conjunctival melanoma is most often conservative, but exenteration is sometimes necessary in order to achieve local control of the disease. It can be performed as a primary procedure in cases of locally advanced disease or as a secondary procedure after one or more recurrences. No benefit to secondary exenteration on patient survival has been demonstrated to date for conjunctival melanoma, and it is generally considered a palliative procedure.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Single-center retrospective study performed in the ocular oncology department of the Institut Curi

AIM: Diagnosis and treatment of tumors of the eye is extremely difficul; surgical treatment in advanced stages, when the tumor grows in the orbit, leads to extensive radical surgery of the face. The extent and nature of surgical procedures depends on the nature of the tumor process, in advanced stages is indicated mutilating surgery--exenteration of the orbit. Exenteration of the orbit due to the extrascleral extension of malignant melanoma of the uvea is very rare, unfortunately, even today in certain cases it is necessary to make such a mutilating surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Case report

We report an unusual case of fulminant endogenous Clostridium septicum panophthalmitis. A 74-year-old male patient presented with sudden amaurosis in the right eye, which in a few hours, evolved into an orbital cellulitis, endophthalmitis, anterior segment ischemia, and secondary perforation of the eye. A complete diagnostic study, which included cranial and orbital contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan, contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging, blood cultures, and complete blood work, were performed. No causal agent was identified. Clostridium septicum infection caused fulminant gase

Orbital implants are often used for the correction of volume deficit after enucleation or evisceration. An orbital implant enhances aesthetics and improves mobility of the subsequent prosthetic eye. With advancements in technology and techniques, implant-related complication rates have been decreased. However, implant exposition as one of the most common complications of socket surgery is still a problem for the oculoplastic surgeon. Many factors are thought to cause orbital implant exposure: Large implants, tension on the wound, and textured surface of the implant may cause a breakdown of the

The authors report a rare case of primary orbital melanoma (POM) combined with giant divided nevus of the eyelid. An 8-year-old Chinese girl is referred for evaluation of 2-month duration of exophthalmos with decreased vision, epiphora, and pain on her right eye. His presentation, imaging, biopsy, histopathology, and management are presented. The possible cellular origin of the POM and the relationship of POM and divided nevus are discussed. We presume that divided nevus may be one of rarely preexisting lesions of POM.

A full-term baby girl with Fraser syndrome was born with right incomplete cryptophthalmos. On examination, the globe was completely covered with skin with partially formed eyelids laterally. At 3 years of age, she underwent an evisceration with orbital implant and reconstruction of the eyelids and fornices using the pre-existing scleral remnant. Custom ocular prosthetic fitting was performed 5 weeks postoperatively. At 4 years follow up, she continued to successfully retain an ocular prosthesis.

We discuss the reconstruction of an orbit destroyed by an invasive fungal infection. Sino-nasal mucormycosis is usually associated with a poor prognosis, and occurs almost exclusively in immunocompromised patients. Serial imaging leading to repeated radical debridement, along with intravenous amphotericin, helped the patient to recover from this serious disease. A well-vascularised galeal frontalis-pericranial flap from the mid-forehead region was used to reconstruct the orbital defect.
