BACKGROUND: Comorbid chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) complicate the treatment of both conditions. Previous research has identified pain catastrophizing as a potentially important variable contributing to the relationship between chronic pain and PTSD. However, little is known regarding how the different dimensions of pain catastrophizing-rumination, magnification, and helplessness-uniquely contribute to the relationship between PTSD symptomatology and measures of pain outcome.
METHODS: 491 treatment seeking participants were admitted to a three-week interdisciplinary pa

Patients treated for burn injuries commonly experience high levels of acute pain and anxiety during hospitalization, particularly as it relates to their dressing changes and other medical procedures. A new instrument, the burn specific pain anxiety scale (BSPAS), was designed to characterize patient's anxiety in this setting, but its predictive validity in relation to other measures of anxiety has yet to be demonstrated. In this study, 27 patients with acute burn injuries completed three measures of anxiety upon admission to a major medical burn trauma center. Scores on the anxiety measures we

BACKGROUND: While chronic pain has been said to impact patient's response to methadone maintenance treatment for opioid dependence, the reported findings are inconsistent. These discrepancies may be a direct result of variations in the measurement of chronic pain or definitions of response to methadone treatment. The goal of this study is to evaluate the association between pain and substance use behaviour to determine the real impact of comorbid pain in the methadone population. We also aim to examine sources of variation across the literature with a specific focus on the measurement of pain.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence for the observation that stress has an impact on developing and maintaining temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain. There are various self-report questionnaires available for the assessment of stress. However, completing questionnaires with several items can be time-consuming for both the patient and the clinician. Therefore, the use of a single-item stress measure could be beneficial.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the validity of a single-item stress measure in adults by comparing it to an existing, more comprehensive stress measure, as well as to other psyc

BACKGROUND: Pain intensity remains a primary focus clinically for sickle cell disease pain assessment despite the fact that pain quality and pain location and distribution are critical for clinical diagnosis and treatment of its etiology. However, in part because of measurement issues, scant evidence is available about pain location or its relationship to intensity and quality in adults with SCD.
AIM: Our study aim was to examine sickle cell disease pain location for relationships with pain quality and intensity measured in outpatient and inpatient settings.
METHODS: We used an existing long

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a hereditary disorder of red blood cells in humans. Complications such as pain, stroke, and organ failure occur in SCD as malformed, sickled red blood cells passing through small blood vessels get trapped. Particularly, acute pain is known to be the primary symptom of SCD. The insidious and subjective nature of SCD pain leads to challenges in pain assessment among Medical Practitioners (MPs). Thus, accurate identification of markers of pain in patients with SCD is crucial for pain management. Classifying clinical notes of patients with SCD based on their pain level

The contemporary approach to pain measurement in people and animals seeks to measure the affective (emotional) component of the pain experience using structured questionnaires with formal scoring methodology. Chronic pain has wide-ranging impacts which affects the quality of life (QOL) of the individual, whether that is a person or an animal. Accordingly instruments to measure chronic pain are designed to measure its impact on QOL and are called health-related quality of life (HRQL) instruments. In veterinary science instruments to measure pain are based on behavioural observation by the veter

OBJECTIVE: In rheumatoid arthritis, composite outcomes constructed from a combination of outcome measures are widely used to enhance responsiveness (sensitivity to change) and comprehensively summarize response. Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain is the primary outcome measure in many osteoarthritis (OA) trials. Information from other outcomes, such as rescue medication use and other WOMAC subscales, could be added to create composite outcomes, but the sensitivity of such a composite has not been tested.
METHODS: We used data from a completed trial of

Low back pain (LBP) is a common chronic musculoskeletal disorder with significant interpersonal variability, so individual treatment strategies are difficult to implement. Prevention of recurrence, particularly through exercise and physical activity, appears to be necessary to avoid acute episodes. The present study aims to find whether some behavioral characteristics (particularly inter-girdle coordination) in the painless period in patients who had experienced LBP could be detected as relevant to prevent acute recurrences. Thirty-four young adults participated in the study. They were recruit

BACKGROUND: Deep Endometriosis (DE) classification studies with Enzian never compared solitary compartments (A, B, C, F), and combinations of anatomical locations (A&B, A&C, B&C, A&B&C), in correlation to pain. Therefore, the results of these studies are challenging to translate to the clinical situation.
OBJECTIVES: We studied pain symptoms and their correlation with the solitary and combinations of anatomical locations of deep endometriosis lesion(s) classified by the Enzian score.
